G-d made the canopy, and divided the waters which were beneath the canopy, from the waters which were above the canopy, and it was so.

8 Vayikra Elokim la-rakia shamayim vayehi-erev vayehi-voker yom sheni.
G-d called the canopy heaven.

9 Vayomer Elokim yikavu hamayim mitachat hashamayim el-makom echad vetera'eh hayabashah vayehi chen.
G-d said, "Let the waters beneath the heavens be gathered into one place, and let the dryness, be seen." It was so.

10 Vayikra Elokim layabashah eretz ulemikveh hamayim kara yamim vayar Elokim ki-tov.
G-d called the dryness, "Earth," and the gathering of waters, He called "Seas," and G-d saw that it was good.

11 Vayomer Elokim tadshe ha'aretz deshe esev mazria zera etz pri oseh peri lemino asher zar'o-vo al-ha'aretz vayehi-chen.
G-d said, "Let the earth sprout grass, seed-yielding herbs, fruit trees bearing fruit of its own kind, with its seed within it, upon the earth." And it was so.

12 Vatotze ha'aretz deshe esev mazria zera leminehu ve'etz oseh pri asher zar'o-vo leminehu vayar Elokim ki-tov.

G-d said, "Let there be lights in the canopy of heaven to divide between the day and the night, and they will serve for signs for seasons, for days and for years.

15 Vehayu li-meorot birekia hashamayim leha'ir al-ha'aretz vayehi-chen.
They will be for lights in the canopy of heaven to illuminate the earth." And it was so.

16 Vaya'as Elokim et-shenei hameorot hagdolim et-hamaor hagadol le-memshelet hayom ve'et hamaor hakaton le-memshelet halailah ve'et hakochavim.
G-d made the two great lights, the large light to rule the day, and the small light to rule the night, and the stars.

17 Vayiten otam Elokim birekia hashamayim leha'ir al-ha'aretz.
G-d set them in the canopy of the heaven to illuminate the earth,

18 Velimshol bayom uvalailah ulehavdil bein ha'or uvein hachoshech vayar Elokim ki-tov.

20 Vayomer Elokim yishretzu hamayim sheretz nefesh chayah ve'of yeofef al-ha'aretz al-penei rekia hashamayim.

21 Vayivra Elokim et-hataninim hagedolim ve'et kol nefesh hachayah haromeset asher shartzu hamayim le-minehem ve'et kol-of kanaf leminehu vayar Elokim ki-tov.
And thus G-d created the great whales, and every living creature that creeps, with which the waters teem, of its kind, and every winged bird of its kind; and G-d saw that it was good.

22 Vayevarekh otam Elokim lemor peru urevu umil'u et-hamayim bayamim veha'of yirev ba'aretz.
G-d blessed them saying, "Be fruitful and multiply, fill the waters of the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth."

23 Vayehi-erev vayehi-voker yom chamishi.
It became evening and it became morning, the fifth day.

24 Vayomer Elokim "totze ha'aretz nefesh chayah leminah behemah varemes vechayeto-eretz leminah vayehi-chen.
G-d said, Let the earth bring forth living creatures, each of its kind, animals [of pasture], creeping things, and beasts of the earth, each to its kind."
And it was so.

25 Vaya'as Elokim et chayat ha'aretz leminah ve'et habehemah leminah ve'et kol-remes ha'adamah leminehu vayar Elokim ki-tov.
And thus G-d made the beasts of the earth, each of its kind, the animals [of pasture] each of its kind, and everything that creeps on the ground, each of its kind, and G-d saw that it was good.

26 Vayomer Elokim na'aseh adam betzalmenu kidemutenu veyirdu bidegat hayam uve'of hashamayim uvabehemah uvechol-ha'aretz uvechol-haremes haromes al-ha'aretz.
G-d said, "Let us make man in our image, as our likeness, and let him dominate the fish of the sea, the birds of the heaven, the animals, all the earth, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."

27 Vayivra Elokim et-ha'adam betzalmo betzelem Elokim bara oto zachar unekevah bara otam.
And thus G-d created man in His form. In the form of G-d, He created them.

28 Vayevarech otam Elokim vayomer lahem Elokim peru urevu umil'u et-ha'aretz vechiveshuha uredu bidegat hayam uve'of hashamayim uvechol-chayah haromeset al-ha'aretz.
G-d blessed them, and G-d said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it, and dominate the fish of the sea, the birds of the heaven, and every living thing that moves upon the earth."

29 Vayomer Elokim hineh natati lachem et-chol-esev zorea zera asher al-penei kol-ha'aretz ve'et-kol-ha'etz asher-bo feri-etz zorea zara lachem yihyeh le-ochlah.
G-d said, "Behold, I have given to you all seed-yielding herbs that are on the surface of the earth, and every tree that has seed-yielding fruit; to you it shall be for food.

30 Ulechol-chayat ha'aretz ulechol-of hashamayim ulechol romes al-ha'aretz asher-bo nefesh chayah et-kol-yerek esev le'ochlah vayehi-chen.
And for every animal of the earth, for every bird of the heaven, and for everything that creeps on the ground, in which there is a living spirit, all vegetational herbs shall be [their] food." And it was so.

31 Vayar Elokim et-kol-asher asah vehineh-tov me'od vayehi-erev vayehi-voker yom hashishi.
G-d saw all that He had made, and behold it was very good. It became evening and it became morning, the sixth day.

The Shabbat

2:1 Vayechulu hashamayim veha'aretz vechol-tzeva'am.
The heavens and the earth were completed, and [so were] all their array.

2 Vayechal Elokim bayom hashvi'i melachto asher asah vayishbot bayom hashvi'i mikol-melachto asher asah.
G-d completed by the seventh day His work which He had made, and He abstained on the seventh day from all His work which He had made.

3 Vayevarech Elokim et-yom hashvi'i vayekadesh oto ki vo shavat mikol-melachto asher-bara Elokim la'asot.
G-d blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, for on it He abstained from all His work, which G-d had created to do.

Sheni

4 Eleh toledot hashamayim veha'aretz behibare'am beyom asot HASHEM Elokim eretz veshamayim.
This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, on the day when HASHEM G-d made earth and heaven.

All the plants of the fields were not yet on the earth, and all the herbal vegetation of the field had not yet sprouted, for HASHEM G-d had not brought rain upon the earth, and there was [yet] no man to work the soil.

A mist rose up from the earth, and it watered the entire surface of the soil.

7 Vayitzer HASHEM Elokim et-ha'adam afar min-ha'adamah vayipach pe'apav nishmat chayim vayehi ha'adam lenefesh chayah.
HASHEM G-d then formed the man, dust from the ground, and He blew into his nostrils the breath of life. And so man became a living soul.

8 Vayita HASHEM Elokim gan-be'Eden mikedem vayasem sham et-ha'adam asher yatzar.
HASHEM G-d planted a garden in Eden, to the east, and there He placed the man He had formed.

9 Vayatzmach HASHEM Elokim min-ha'adamah kol-etz nechmad lemar'eh vetov lema'achal ve'Etz haChayim betoch hagan ve'Etz haDa'at tov vara.
HASHEM G-d made grow out of the soil every tree that is pleasant to look at, and good for [producing] food; the Tree of Life in the middle of the Garden, and the Tree of Knowledge [of what is] good and evil.

10 Venahar yotze me'Eden lehashkot et-hagan umisham yipared vehayah le-arba'ah rashim.
A river went out of Eden to water the Garden, and from there it separated and became four headwaters.

11 Shem ha'echad Pishon hu hasovev et kol-eretz haChavilah asher-sham hazahav.
The name of the first is Pishon which surrounds all the land of Chavilah, where there is gold.

12 Uzahav ha'aretz hahi tov sham habedolach ve'even hashoham.
The gold of that land is good. Also found there is bdellium and onyx stones.

13 Veshem hanahar hasheni Gichon hu hasovev et kol-eretz Kush.
The name of the second river is Gichon. It surrounds all the land of Kush.

14 Veshem hanahar hashlishi Chidekel hu haholekh kidemat Asshur vehanahar ha revi'i hu Ferat.
The name of the third river is Chidekel, which flows to the east of Asshur. The fourth river is Perat.

HASHEM G-d took the man, and placed him in the Garden of Eden, to work it and to preserve it.

16 Vayetzav HASHEM Elokim al-ha'adam lemor mikol etz-hagan achol tochel.
HASHEM G-d commanded the man, saying, "You may certainly eat from every tree in the Garden.

17 Ume'etz hada'at tov vara lo tochal mimenu ki beyom acholcha mimenu mot tamut.
But from the Tree of Knowledge of what is good and evil, you shall not eat from it, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die."

HASHEM G-d said, "It is not good for the man be alone. I will make a helper for him."

HASHEM G-d formed from the ground, every beast of the field, and every bird of the heaven, and brought them to the man, to see what he would call them. Whatever the man called [each] living creature, that is its name.

Shlishi

20 Vayikra ha'adam shemot lechol-habehemah ule'of hashamayim ulechol chayat hasadeh ule-Adam lo-matza ezer kenegdo.
The man gave names to every animal, to the birds of the heaven, and to every beast of the field, but the man did not find a helper for himself.

21 Vayapel HASHEM Elokim tardemah al-ha'adam vayishan vayikach achat mitzal'otav vayisgor basar tachtenah.
HASHEM G-d caused unconsciousness to fall upon the man and he slept. He took one of his ribs and closed-over flesh in its place.

HASHEM G-d built the rib that He took from the man into a woman, and He brought her to the man.

23 Vayomer ha'adam zot hapa'am etzem me'atzamay uvasar mibesari lezot yikare ishah ki me'ish lukacha-zot.
The man said, "This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. This shall be called Woman, from from Man was she taken."

24 Al-ken ya'azov-ish et-aviv ve'et imo vedavak be'ishto vehayu levasar echad.
Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother, and cling to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

25 Vayihyu shneihem arumim ha'adam ve'ishto velo yitboshashu.
The two of them were naked, the man and his wife, and they were not ashamed.

The Serpent's Enticement

3:1 Vehanachash hayah arum mikol chayat hasadeh asher asah HASHEM Elokim vayomer el-ha'ishah af ki-amar Elokim lo tochelu mikol etz hagan.
The serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which HASHEM G-d made; and it said to the woman, "Did G-d even say that you should not eat from all the trees of the Garden?"

2 Vatomer ha'ishah el-hanachash mipri etz-hagan nochel.
The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat from the fruit of the trees of the Garden.

3 Umiperi ha'etz asher betoch-hagan amar Elokim lo tochelu mimenu velo tige'u bo pen temutun.
But from the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the Garden, G-d said, 'You shall not eat from it, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'"

4 Vayomer hanachash el-ha'ishah lo mot temutun.
The serpent said to the woman, "You certainly will not die.

5 Ki yodea Elokim ki beyom acholchem mimenu venifkechu eineichem viheyitem ke'Elokim yod'ey tov vara.
For G-d knows that on the day you will eat from it, your eyes will be opened, and you will become as gods, knowing what is good and what is evil."

The woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was tempting to the eyes, and that the tree was appealing as a means of [obtaining] wisdom. She took of its fruit and she ate, and she also gave it to her husband, and he ate.

The eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized that they were naked. They sewed together fig leaves, and amde for themselves loincloths.

8 Vayishme'u et-kol HASHEM Elokim mithalech bagan le-ruach hayom vayitchabe ha'adam ve'ishto mipenei HASHEM Elokim betoch etz hagan.
They heard the voice of HASHEM G-d moving in the Garden as the breeze of the day. The man and his wife hid themselves from [the Presence of] HASHEM G-d among the trees of the Garden.

HASHEM G-d called to the man, and He said, "Where are you?"

10 Vayomer et-kolecha shamati bagan va'ira ki-eyrom anochi va'echave.
He said, "I heard Your voice in the Garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid myself."

11 Vayomer mi higid lecha ki eyrom atah hamin-ha'etz asher tziviticha levilti achol-mimenu achalta.
And He said, "Who told you that you were naked? From the tree whereof I commanded you not to eat of it, have you eaten?"

The man said, "The woman that You gave to be with me - she gave me of the tree and I ate."

HASHEM G-d said to the woman, "What is this that you have done?" She said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."

14 Vayomer HASHEM Elokim el-hanachash ki asita zot arur atah mikol-habehemah umikol chayat hasadeh al-gechonecha telech ve'afar tochal kol-yemei chayecha.
HASHEM G-d said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, cursed are you from among all animals and beasts of the field. On your belly you shall crawl. And dust you shall eat all the days of your life.

15 Ve'eiva asit beinecha uvein ha'ishah uvein zar'achah uvein zar'ah hu yeshufecha rosh ve'ata teshufenu akev.
I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He shall strike you on the head, and you shall strike him on the heel."
