Bereishit Chapter 10

 

א וְאֵלֶּה תּוֹלְדֹת בְּנֵי-נֹחַ שֵׁם חָם וָיָפֶת וַיִּוָּלְדוּ לָהֶם בָּנִים אַחַר הַמַּבּוּל

 

 

Ve'eleh toldot benei Noach Shem Cham vaYafet vayivaledu lahem banim achar hamabul.

 

 

1. These are the chronicles of Noach's sons, Shem, Cham and Yefet, to whom children were born after the flood.

 

 

ב בְּנֵי יֶפֶת--גֹּמֶר וּמָגוֹג וּמָדַי וְיָוָן וְתֻבָל וּמֶשֶׁךְ וְתִירָס

 

 

Benei Yefet Gomer uMagog uMadai veYavan veTuval uMeshech veTiras.

 

 

2. The sons of Yefet were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Yavan, Tuval, Meshech andTiras.

 

 

ג וּבְנֵי גֹּמֶר--אַשְׁכְּנַז וְרִיפַת וְתֹגַרְמָה

 

 

Uvenei Gomer Ashkenaz veRifat veTogarmah.

 

 

3. The sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Rifat and Togarmah.

 

 

ד וּבְנֵי יָוָן אֱלִישָׁה וְתַרְשִׁישׁ כִּתִּים, וְדֹדָנִים

 

 

Uvenei Yavan Elishah veTarshish Kittim veDodanim.

 

 

4. The sons of Yavan were Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim and Dodanim.

 

 

ה מֵאֵלֶּה נִפְרְדוּ אִיֵּי הַגּוֹיִם בְּאַרְצֹתָם אִישׁ לִלְשֹׁנוֹ--לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם בְּגוֹיֵהֶם

 

 

Me'eleh niferedu iyei hagoyim be'artzotam ish lileshono lemishpechotam begoyehem.

 

 

5. From these there branched out the isolated nations in their lands, each according to its language, according to families in their nations.

 

 

ו וּבְנֵי חָם--כּוּשׁ וּמִצְרַיִם וּפוּט וּכְנָעַן

 

 

Uvenei Cham Kush uMitzrayim uFut uChena'an.

 

 

6. The sons of Cham were Kush, Mitzrayim, Put and Kena'an.

 

 

ז וּבְנֵי כוּשׁ--סְבָא וַחֲוִילָה וְסַבְתָּה וְרַעְמָה וְסַבְתְּכָא וּבְנֵי רַעְמָה שְׁבָא וּדְדָן

 

 

Uvenei Chush Seva vaChavilah veSavta veRamah veSavtecha uvnei Ra'amah Shva uDedan.

 

 

7. The sons of Kush were Seva, Chavilah, Savta, Ra'amah and Savtecha. The sons of Ra'amah were Sheva and Dedan.

 

 

ח וְכוּשׁ יָלַד אֶת-נִמְרֹד הוּא הֵחֵל לִהְיוֹת גִּבֹּר בָּאָרֶץ

 

 

VeChush yalad et-Nimrod hu hechel lihyot gibor ba'aretz.

 

 

8. Kush fathered Nimrod. He began to be powerful on earth.

 

 

ט הוּא-הָיָה גִבֹּר-צַיִד לִפְנֵי יְהוָה עַל-כֵּן יֵאָמַר כְּנִמְרֹד גִּבּוֹר צַיִד לִפְנֵי יְהוָה

 

 

Hu-hayah gibor-tza'id lifnei HASHEM al-ken ye'amar keNimrod gibor tZa'id lifnei HASHEM.

 

 

9. He was a mighty trapper before HASHEM. It is therefore said, "Like Nimrod, a mighty trapper before HASHEM."

 

 

י וַתְּהִי רֵאשִׁית מַמְלַכְתּוֹ בָּבֶל וְאֶרֶךְ וְאַכַּד וְכַלְנֵה בְּאֶרֶץ שִׁנְעָר

 

 

Vatehi reshit mamlachto Bavel ve'Erech ve'Akad veChalneh be'eretz Shin'ar.

 

 

10. The beginning of his kingdom was Bavel, along with Erech, Akad, and Chalneh, in the land of Shinar

 

 

יא מִן-הָאָרֶץ הַהִוא יָצָא אַשּׁוּר וַיִּבֶן אֶת-נִינְוֵה וְאֶת-רְחֹבֹת עִיר וְאֶת-כָּלַח

 

 

Min-ha'aretz hahi yatza Ashur vayiven et-Nineveh ve'et-Rechovot ir ve'et-Kalach.

 

 

11. Ashur left that land, and he built Nineveh, Rechovot, Ir, Kalach.

 

 

יב וְאֶת-רֶסֶן בֵּין נִינְוֵה וּבֵין כָּלַח--הִוא הָעִיר הַגְּדֹלָה

 

 

Ve'et-Resen bein Nineveh uvein Kalach hi ha'ir hagdolah

 

 

12. and Resen, between Nineveh and Kalach; it is a great city.

 

 

יג וּמִצְרַיִם יָלַד אֶת-לוּדִים וְאֶת-עֲנָמִים וְאֶת-לְהָבִים--וְאֶת-נַפְתֻּחִים

 

 

UMitzrayim yalad et-Ludim ve'et-Anamim ve'et-Lehavim ve'et-Naftuchim.

 

 

13. Mitzrayim fathered the Ludim, the Anamim, the Lehavim, the Naftuchim.

 

 

יד וְאֶת-פַּתְרֻסִים וְאֶת-כַּסְלֻחִים אֲשֶׁר יָצְאוּ מִשָּׁם פְּלִשְׁתִּים--וְאֶת-כַּפְתֹּרִים

 

 

Ve'et-Patrusim ve'et-Kasluchim asher yatze'u misham Plishtim ve'et Kaftorim.

 

 

14. the Patrusim, and the Kasluchim - from whome the Pelishtim descended - and the Kaftorim.

 

 

טו וּכְנַעַן יָלַד אֶת-צִידֹן בְּכֹרוֹ--וְאֶת-חֵת

 

 

UChena'an yalad et-Tzidon bechoro ve'et-Chet,

 

 

15. Kena'an fathered Sidon, his firstborn, and Chet,

 

 

טז וְאֶת-הַיְבוּסִי וְאֶת-הָאֱמֹרִי וְאֵת הַגִּרְגָּשִׁי

 

 

Ve'et-haYevusi ve'et-ha'Emori ve'et-haGirgashi,

 

 

16. as well as the Yevusi, the Emori, the Girgashi,

 

 

יז וְאֶת-הַחִוִּי וְאֶת-הַעַרְקִי וְאֶת-הַסִּינִי

 

 

Ve'et-haChivi ve'et-ha'Arki ve'et-haSini

 

 

17. the Chivi, the Arki, the Sini,

 

 

יח וְאֶת-הָאַרְוָדִי וְאֶת-הַצְּמָרִי וְאֶת-הַחֲמָתִי וְאַחַר נָפֹצוּ מִשְׁפְּחוֹת הַכְּנַעֲנִי

 

 

Ve'et-ha'Arvadi ve'et-haTzmari ve'et-haChamati ve'achar nafotzu mishpechot haKna'ani

 

 

18. the Arvadi, the Tzemari and the Chamati. Later, the families of the Kena'ani became scattered.

 

 

יט וַיְהִי גְּבוּל הַכְּנַעֲנִי מִצִּידֹן--בֹּאֲכָה גְרָרָה עַד-עַזָּה: בֹּאֲכָה סְדֹמָה וַעֲמֹרָה וְאַדְמָה וּצְבֹיִם--עַד-לָשַׁע

 

 

Vayehi gvul haKna'ani miTzidon boachah Gerarah ad-Azah boachah Sedomah va'Amorah ve'Admah uTzvo'im ad-Lasha.

 

 

19. The Kena'ani borders exteed from Sidon toward Gerar until Gaza, and toward Sedom, Amorah, Admah and Tzevoyim until Lasha.

 

 

כ אֵלֶּה בְנֵי-חָם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לִלְשֹׁנֹתָם בְּאַרְצֹתָם בְּגוֹיֵהֶם

 

 

Eleh venei-Cham lemishpechotam lileshonotam be'artzotam begoyehem.

 

 

20. These are the descendants of Cham, according to their families and their languages, by their lands and their nations.

 

 

כא וּלְשֵׁם יֻלַּד גַּם-הוּא: אֲבִי כָּל-בְּנֵי-עֵבֶר--אֲחִי יֶפֶת הַגָּדוֹל

 

 

UleShem yulad gam-hu avi kol-benei-Ever achi Yefet hagadol.

 

 

21. To Shem, sons were also born. He was the ancestor of all Ever's descendants, and the brother of Yefet the eldest.

 

 

כב בְּנֵי שֵׁם עֵילָם וְאַשּׁוּר וְאַרְפַּכְשַׁד וְלוּד וַאֲרָם

 

 

Benei Shem Eylam ve'Ashur ve'Arpachshad veLud va'Aram.

 

 

22. The sons of Shem were Elam, Ashur, Arpachshad, Lud and Aram.

 

 

כג וּבְנֵי אֲרָם--עוּץ וְחוּל וְגֶתֶר וָמַשׁ

 

 

Uvenei Aram Utz veChul veGeter vaMash

 

 

23. The sons of Aram were Utz, Chul, Geter and Mash.

 

 

כד וְאַרְפַּכְשַׁד יָלַד אֶת-שָׁלַח וְשֶׁלַח יָלַד אֶת-עֵבֶר

 

 

Ve'Arpachshad yalad et-Shalach veShelach yalad et-Ever.

 

 

24. Arpachshad had a son Shelach, and Shelach had a son Ever.

 

 

כה וּלְעֵבֶר יֻלַּד שְׁנֵי בָנִים: שֵׁם הָאֶחָד פֶּלֶג כִּי בְיָמָיו נִפְלְגָה הָאָרֶץ וְשֵׁם אָחִיו יָקְטָן

 

 

Ule-Ever yulad shenei vanim shem ha'echad Peleg ki veyamav niflegah ha'aretz veshem achiv Yaktan.

 

 

25. Two sons were born to Ever. The name of one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided. His brother's name was Yaktan.

 

 

כו וְיָקְטָן יָלַד אֶת-אַלְמוֹדָד וְאֶת-שָׁלֶף וְאֶת-חֲצַרְמָוֶת וְאֶת-יָרַח

 

 

VeYaktan yalad et-Almodad ve'et-Shalef ve'et-Chatzarmavet ve'et-Yarach,

 

 

26. Yaktan fathered Almodad, Shalef, Chatzarmavet, Yarach,

 

 

כז וְאֶת-הֲדוֹרָם וְאֶת-אוּזָל וְאֶת-דִּקְלָה

 

 

Ve'et-Hadoram ve'et-Uzal ve'et-Diklah

 

 

27. Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah,

 

 

כח וְאֶת-עוֹבָל וְאֶת-אֲבִימָאֵל וְאֶת-שְׁבָא

 

 

Ve'et-Oval ve'et-Avima'el ve'et-Sheva,

 

 

28. Oval, Avima'el, Sheva,

 

 

כט וְאֶת-אוֹפִר וְאֶת-חֲוִילָה וְאֶת-יוֹבָב כָּל-אֵלֶּה בְּנֵי יָקְטָן

 

 

Ve'et Ofir ve'et-Chavilah ve'et-Yovav kol-eleh benei Yaktan.

 

 

29. Ofir, Chavilah and Yovav. All these were the sons of Yaktan.

 

 

ל וַיְהִי מוֹשָׁבָם מִמֵּשָׁא בֹּאֲכָה סְפָרָה הַר הַקֶּדֶם

 

 

Vayehi moshavam miMesha boachah Sfarah har hakedem.

 

 

30. Their settlements extended from Mesha towards Sefarah, the eastern mountain.

 

 

לא אֵלֶּה בְנֵי-שֵׁם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לִלְשֹׁנֹתָם בְּאַרְצֹתָם לְגוֹיֵהֶם

 

 

Eleh venei-Shem lemishpechotam lileshonotam be'artzotam legoyehem.

 

 

31. These are the descendants of Shem, according to their families and their languages, by their lands an their nations.

 

 

לב אֵלֶּה מִשְׁפְּחֹת בְּנֵי-נֹחַ לְתוֹלְדֹתָם בְּגוֹיֵהֶם וּמֵאֵלֶּה נִפְרְדוּ הַגּוֹיִם בָּאָרֶץ--אַחַר הַמַּבּוּל

 

 

Eleh mishpechot benei-Noach letoldotam begoyehem ume'eleh nifredu hagoyim ba'aretz achar hamabul.

 

 

32. Such were the families of Noach's sons, according to their offspring in their nations. From these, the nations spread out on the earth after the flood.
