Bereishit Chapter 9

 

א וַיְבָרֶךְ אֱלֹהִים אֶת-נֹחַ וְאֶת-בָּנָיו וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם פְּרוּ וּרְבוּ וּמִלְאוּ אֶת-הָאָרֶץ

 

 

Vayevarech Elokim et-Noach ve'et-banav vayomer lahem peru urevu umil'u et-ha'aretz.

 

 

1. G-d blessed Noach and his sons, and said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth."

 

 

ב וּמוֹרַאֲכֶם וְחִתְּכֶם יִהְיֶה עַל כָּל-חַיַּת הָאָרֶץ וְעַל כָּל-עוֹף הַשָּׁמָיִם בְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר תִּרְמֹשׂ הָאֲדָמָה וּבְכָל-דְּגֵי הַיָּם בְּיֶדְכֶם נִתָּנוּ

 

 

Umora'achem vechitchem yihyeh al kol-chayat ha'aretz ve'al kol-of hashamayim bechol asher tirmos ha'adamah uvechol-degei hayam beyedchem nitanu.

 

 

2. "Fear and dread of you shall be instilled in all the wild beasts of the earth and in all the birds of the sky - among everything that swarms on the land and among all the fish of the sea - they are placed in your hand."

 

 

ג כָּל-רֶמֶשׂ אֲשֶׁר הוּא-חַי לָכֶם יִהְיֶה לְאָכְלָה: כְּיֶרֶק עֵשֶׂב נָתַתִּי לָכֶם אֶת-כֹּל

 

 

Kol-remes asher hu-chai lachem yihyeh le-ochlah keyerek esev natati lachem et-kol.

 

 

3. "Every swarming creature that lives shall be yours to eat; like grass vegetation I have given you all."

 

 

ד אַךְ-בָּשָׂר בְּנַפְשׁוֹ דָמוֹ לֹא תֹאכֵלוּ

 

 

Ach-basar benafsho damo lo tochelu.

 

 

4. "Only flesh with its lifeblood, you shall not eat."

 

 

ה וְאַךְ אֶת-דִּמְכֶם לְנַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶם אֶדְרֹשׁ מִיַּד כָּל-חַיָּה אֶדְרְשֶׁנּוּ וּמִיַּד הָאָדָם מִיַּד אִישׁ אָחִיו--אֶדְרֹשׁ אֶת-נֶפֶשׁ הָאָדָם

 

 

Ve'ach et-dimchem lenafshoteichem edrosh miyad kol-chayah edreshenu umiyad ha'adam miyad ish achiv edrosh et-nefesh ha'adam.

 

 

5. "Only of the blood of your souls will I demand an account. From the hand of every wild beast I will demand an account, and from the hand of man - from the hand of a person's brother, I will demand an account of a human life.

 

 

ו שֹׁפֵךְ דַּם הָאָדָם בָּאָדָם דָּמוֹ יִשָּׁפֵךְ: כִּי בְּצֶלֶם אֱלֹהִים עָשָׂה אֶת-הָאָדָם

 

 

Shofech dam ha'adam ba'adam damo yishafech ki betzelem Elokim asah et-ha'adam.

 

 

6. "He who spills the blood of man, through man shall his blood be spilled, because in the form of G-d He made man."

 

 

ז וְאַתֶּם פְּרוּ וּרְבוּ שִׁרְצוּ בָאָרֶץ וּרְבוּ-בָהּ

 

 

Ve'atem peru urevu shirtzu va'aretz urevu-vah.

 

 

7. "Now be fertile and increase, swarm through the earth and be populous on it."

 

 

ח וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים אֶל-נֹחַ וְאֶל-בָּנָיו אִתּוֹ לֵאמֹר

 

 

Vayomer Elokim el-Noach ve'el banav ito lemor.

 

 

8. G-d said to Noach and to his sons with him, saying,

 

 

ט וַאֲנִי הִנְנִי מֵקִים אֶת-בְּרִיתִי אִתְּכֶם וְאֶת-זַרְעֲכֶם אַחֲרֵיכֶם

 

 

Va'ani hineni mekim et-beriti itechem ve'et-zar'achem achareichem.

 

 

9. "I Myself am making a covenant with you, with your offspring after you,"

 

 

י וְאֵת כָּל-נֶפֶשׁ הַחַיָּה אֲשֶׁר אִתְּכֶם בָּעוֹף בַּבְּהֵמָה וּבְכָל-חַיַּת הָאָרֶץ אִתְּכֶם מִכֹּל יֹצְאֵי הַתֵּבָה לְכֹל חַיַּת הָאָרֶץ

 

 

Ve'et kol-nefesh hachayah asher itchem ba'of babehemah uvechol-chayat ha'aretz itechem mikol yot'zey hatevah lechol chayat ha'aretz.

 

 

10. "and with every living creature that is with you, among birds, domestic animals, and all the wild beasts of the earth with you - all who left the ark, including every animal on earth."

 

 

יא וַהֲקִמֹתִי אֶת-בְּרִיתִי אִתְּכֶם וְלֹא-יִכָּרֵת כָּל-בָּשָׂר עוֹד מִמֵּי הַמַּבּוּל וְלֹא-יִהְיֶה עוֹד מַבּוּל לְשַׁחֵת הָאָרֶץ

 

 

Vahakimoti et-beriti itchem velo-yikaret kol-basar od mimei hamabul velo-yihyeh od mabul leshachet ha'aretz

 

 

11. "I have made My covenant with you: All flesh will never again be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth."

 

 

יב וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים זֹאת אוֹת-הַבְּרִית אֲשֶׁר-אֲנִי נֹתֵן בֵּינִי וּבֵינֵיכֶם וּבֵין כָּל-נֶפֶשׁ חַיָּה אֲשֶׁר אִתְּכֶם--לְדֹרֹת עוֹלָם

 

 

Vayomer Elokim zot ot-habrit asher-ani noten beini uveineichem uvein kol-nefesh chayah asher itchem ledorot olam

 

 

12. G-d said, "This is the sign of the covenant that I am providing - between Myself, beteen you, and between every living creature that is with you - for everlasting generations."

 

 

יג אֶת-קַשְׁתִּי נָתַתִּי בֶּעָנָן וְהָיְתָה לְאוֹת בְּרִית בֵּינִי וּבֵין הָאָרֶץ

 

 

Et-kashti natati be'anan vehayetah le'ot berit beini uvein ha'aretz

 

 

13. "I have placd My rainbow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and the earth."

 

 

יד וְהָיָה בְּעַנְנִי עָנָן עַל-הָאָרֶץ וְנִרְאֲתָה הַקֶּשֶׁת בֶּעָנָן

 

 

Vehayah be'aneni anan al-ha'aretz venir'atah hakeshet be'anan

 

 

14. "At a time when I bring clouds over the earth, the rainbow will be seen in the clouds."

 

 

טו וְזָכַרְתִּי אֶת-בְּרִיתִי אֲשֶׁר בֵּינִי וּבֵינֵיכֶם וּבֵין כָּל-נֶפֶשׁ חַיָּה בְּכָל-בָּשָׂר וְלֹא-יִהְיֶה עוֹד הַמַּיִם לְמַבּוּל לְשַׁחֵת כָּל-בָּשָׂר

 

 

Vezacharti et-briti asher beini uveineichem uvein kol-nefesh chayah bechol-basar velo-yihyeh od hamayim lemabul leshachet kol-basar

 

 

15. "I will then recall My covenant that is between Me, between you, and between every living soul in all flesh, that water will never again come as a flood to destroy all flesh."

 

 

טז וְהָיְתָה הַקֶּשֶׁת בֶּעָנָן וּרְאִיתִיהָ לִזְכֹּר בְּרִית עוֹלָם בֵּין אֱלֹהִים וּבֵין כָּל-נֶפֶשׁ חַיָּה בְּכָל-בָּשָׂר אֲשֶׁר עַל-הָאָרֶץ

 

 

Vehayetah hakeshet be'anan ure'itiha lizkor berit olam bein Elokim uveyn kol-nefesh chayah bechol-basar asher al-ha'aretz

 

 

16. "The rainbow will be in the clouds, and I will see it to recall My eternal covenant - between G-d and between every living soul for all flesh which is on the earth."

 

 

יז וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים אֶל-נֹחַ: זֹאת אוֹת-הַבְּרִית אֲשֶׁר הֲקִמֹתִי בֵּינִי וּבֵין כָּל-בָּשָׂר אֲשֶׁר עַל-הָאָרֶץ

 

 

Vayomer Elokim el-Noach zot ot-habrit asher hakimoti beini uvein kol-basar asher al-ha'aretz

 

 

17. G-d said to Noach, "This is the sign of the covenant that I am making, between Myself and between all flesh that is on the earth."

 

 

יח וַיִּהְיוּ בְנֵי-נֹחַ הַיֹּצְאִים מִן-הַתֵּבָה--שֵׁם וְחָם וָיָפֶת וְחָם הוּא אֲבִי כְנָעַן

 

 

Vayihyu venei-Noach hayotze'im min-hatevah Shem veCham vaYafet veCham hu avi Chena'an

 

 

18. The sons of Noach who emerged from the tevah were Shem, Cham and Yafet. Cham was the father of Kena'an

 

 

יט שְׁלֹשָׁה אֵלֶּה בְּנֵי-נֹחַ וּמֵאֵלֶּה נָפְצָה כָל-הָאָרֶץ

 

 

Shloshah eleh benei-Noach ume'eleh naftzah chol-ha'aretz

 

 

19. These three were the sons of Noach. From these, the whole world was repopulated.

 

 

כ וַיָּחֶל נֹחַ אִישׁ הָאֲדָמָה וַיִּטַּע כָּרֶם

 

 

Vayachel Noach ish ha'adamah vayita karem

 

 

20. Noach began to be a man of the soil, and he planted a vineyard.

 

 

כא וַיֵּשְׁתְּ מִן-הַיַּיִן וַיִּשְׁכָּר וַיִּתְגַּל בְּתוֹךְ אָהֳלֹה

 

 

Vayesht min-hayayin vayishkar vayitgal betoch aholoh

 

 

21. He drank of the wine, became drunk, and uncovered himself in his tent.

 

 

כב וַיַּרְא חָם אֲבִי כְנַעַן אֵת עֶרְוַת אָבִיו וַיַּגֵּד לִשְׁנֵי-אֶחָיו בַּחוּץ

 

 

Vayar Cham avi Chena'an et ervat aviv vayaged lishnei-echav bachutz

 

 

22. Cham, the father of Kena'an, saw his father naked, and he told it to his two brothers outside.

 

 

כג וַיִּקַּח שֵׁם וָיֶפֶת אֶת-הַשִּׂמְלָה וַיָּשִׂימוּ עַל-שְׁכֶם שְׁנֵיהֶם וַיֵּלְכוּ אֲחֹרַנִּית וַיְכַסּוּ אֵת עֶרְוַת אֲבִיהֶם וּפְנֵיהֶם אֲחֹרַנִּית וְעֶרְוַת אֲבִיהֶם לֹא רָאוּ

 

 

Vayikach Shem vaYefet et-hasimlah vayasimu al-shchem shneihem vayelchu achoranit vayechasu et ervat avihem ufneihem achoranit ve'ervat avihem lo ra'u

 

 

23. Shem and Yefet took a cloak, placed it on their shoulders, and walked backwards, covering their naked father. They faced away from him, and did not see their father naked.

 

 

כד וַיִּיקֶץ נֹחַ מִיֵּינוֹ וַיֵּדַע אֵת אֲשֶׁר-עָשָׂה לוֹ בְּנוֹ הַקָּטָן

 

 

Vayiketz Noach miyeno vayeda et asher-asah lo beno hakatan

 

 

24. Noach awoke from his wine-induced sleep, and he realized what his smaller son had done to him.

 

 

כה וַיֹּאמֶר אָרוּר כְּנָעַן: עֶבֶד עֲבָדִים יִהְיֶה לְאֶחָיו

 

 

Vayomer arur Kena'an eved avadim yihyeh le'echav

 

 

25. He said, "Cursed is Kena'an! He shall be a slave's slave to his brothers."

 

 

כו וַיֹּאמֶר בָּרוּךְ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי שֵׁם וִיהִי כְנַעַן עֶבֶד לָמוֹ

 

 

Vayomer baruch HASHEM Elokei Shem viyihi Chena'an eved lamo

 

 

26. He said, "Blessed is HASHEM, the G-d of Shem. Let Kena'an be their slave."

 

 

כז יַפְתְּ אֱלֹהִים לְיֶפֶת וְיִשְׁכֹּן בְּאָהֳלֵי-שֵׁם וִיהִי כְנַעַן עֶבֶד לָמוֹ

 

 

Yaft Elokim leYefet veyishkon be'aholei-Shem viyihi Chena'an eved lamo

 

 

27. "May G-d expand Yefet, and may He dwell in Shem's tents. Let Kena'an be their slave."

 

 

כח וַיְחִי-נֹחַ אַחַר הַמַּבּוּל שְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת שָׁנָה וַחֲמִשִּׁים שָׁנָה

 

 

Vayechi Noach achar hamabul shlosh me'ot shanah vachamishim shanah

 

 

28. After the flood, Noach lived 350 years.

 

 

כט וַיִּהְיוּ כָּל-יְמֵי-נֹחַ תְּשַׁע מֵאוֹת שָׁנָה וַחֲמִשִּׁים שָׁנָה וַיָּמֹת

 

 

Vayehi kol-yemei-Noach tsha me'ot shanah vachamishim shanah vayamot

 

 

29. All the days of Noach came to 950 years, and then he died.
