Bar Mitzvah Graphics
Son of the Commandments
The coming of age in Judaism - becoming responsible to observe the mitzvot (commandments) of the Torah.
A Jewish boy becomes Bar Mitzvah when he turns 13 years old.
According to Kabbalah, a neshama (soul) comes into moral awareness and sensitivity fully develops at Bar Mitzvah, therefore enabling the boy to take responsibility for his actions. He now also begins to don tefillin daily (except for Shabbat and holidays).
On the first Shabbat after the boy turns 13, he is called up to Torah - meaning he goes up to the bimah - aliyah to the Torah (called up to the Torah).
At the conclusion of his final blessing, he reads a portion (Haftarah) from the prophets.
