Bereishit Chapter 14
א וַיְהִי בִּימֵי אַמְרָפֶל מֶלֶךְ-שִׁנְעָר אַרְיוֹךְ מֶלֶךְ אֶלָּסָר כְּדָרְלָעֹמֶר מֶלֶךְ עֵילָם וְתִדְעָל מֶלֶךְ גּוֹיִם
Vayehi bimei Amrafel melech-Shin'ar Ari'och melech Elasar Kedarla'omer melech Eilam veTid'al melech Goyim.
1. This happened in the days of Amrafel king of Shinar. Ari'och king of Elasar, Kedarla'omer king of Eilam, and Tid'al king of Goyim
ב עָשׂוּ מִלְחָמָה אֶת-בֶּרַע מֶלֶךְ סְדֹם וְאֶת-בִּרְשַׁע מֶלֶךְ עֲמֹרָה שִׁנְאָב מֶלֶךְ אַדְמָה וְשֶׁמְאֵבֶר מֶלֶךְ צְבֹיִים וּמֶלֶךְ בֶּלַע הִיא-צֹעַר
Asu milchamah et-Bera melech Sedom ve'et-Birsha melech Amorah Shin'av melech Ademah veShem'ever melech Tezvoyim umelech Bela hi-Tzo'ar.
2. had waged war against Bera king of Sedom, Birsha king of Amorah, Shinav king of Ademah, Shem'ever king of Tzevoyim, and the king of Bela (which is identified as Tzo'ar).
ג כָּל-אֵלֶּה חָבְרוּ אֶל-עֵמֶק הַשִּׂדִּים: הוּא יָם הַמֶּלַח
Kol-eleh chaveru el-Emek haSiddim hu Yam haMelach.
3. All these had come together in the Valley of Siddim - now the Dead Sea.
ד שְׁתֵּים עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה עָבְדוּ אֶת-כְּדָרְלָעֹמֶר וּשְׁלֹשׁ-עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה מָרָדוּ
Shtem-esreh shanah avdu et-Kedarla'omer ushlosh-esreh shanah maradu.
4. Twelve years they had served Kedarla'omer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
ה וּבְאַרְבַּע עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה בָּא כְדָרְלָעֹמֶר וְהַמְּלָכִים אֲשֶׁר אִתּוֹ וַיַּכּוּ אֶת-רְפָאִים בְּעַשְׁתְּרֹת קַרְנַיִם וְאֶת-הַזּוּזִים בְּהָם; וְאֵת הָאֵימִים בְּשָׁוֵה קִרְיָתָיִם
Uve'arba esreh shanah ba Chedarla'omer vehamelachim asher ito vayaku et-Refa'im be'Ashterot Karnayim ve'et- haZuzim beHam ve'et ha'Eimim beShaveh Kiryatayim.
5. in the foureenth year, Chedarla'omer and the kings who were with him came and they defeated the Refa'im in Ashterot Karnayim, the Zuzim in Ham, the Eimim in Shaveh Kiryatayim
ו וְאֶת-הַחֹרִי בְּהַרְרָם שֵׂעִיר עַד אֵיל פָּארָן אֲשֶׁר עַל-הַמִּדְבָּר
Ve'et-haChori behareram Seyir ad Eil Par'an asher al-hamidbar.
6. and the Chori in their hill country of Seyir, as far as Eil Paran, which borders the desert.
ז וַיָּשֻׁבוּ וַיָּבֹאוּ אֶל-עֵין מִשְׁפָּט הִוא קָדֵשׁ וַיַּכּוּ אֶת-כָּל-שְׂדֵה הָעֲמָלֵקִי--וְגַם אֶת-הָאֱמֹרִי הַיֹּשֵׁב בְּחַצְצֹן תָּמָר
Vayashuvu vayavo'u el-Ein Mishpat hi Kadesh vayaku et-kol-sedeh ha'Amaleki vegam et-ha'Emori hayoshev beChatzetzon Tamar.
7. They turned backand came to Ein Mishpat - now Kadesh - and they defeated he Amaleki, as well as the Emori who lived in Chatzetzon Tamar.
ח וַיֵּצֵא מֶלֶךְ-סְדֹם וּמֶלֶךְ עֲמֹרָה וּמֶלֶךְ אַדְמָה וּמֶלֶךְ צְבֹיִים וּמֶלֶךְ בֶּלַע הִוא-צֹעַר וַיַּעַרְכוּ אִתָּם מִלְחָמָה בְּעֵמֶק הַשִּׂדִּים
Vayetze melech-Sedom umelech-Amorah umelech-Ademah umelech Tzevoyim umelech Bela hi-Tzo'ar vaya'archu itam milchamah be'Emek haSidim.
8. The king of Sedom, the king of Amorah, the king of Ademah, the king of Tzevoyim, and the king of Bela (Tzo'ar) came forth and in the Valley of Siddim set up battle lines
ט אֵת כְּדָרְלָעֹמֶר מֶלֶךְ עֵילָם וְתִדְעָל מֶלֶךְ גּוֹיִם וְאַמְרָפֶל מֶלֶךְ שִׁנְעָר וְאַרְיוֹךְ מֶלֶךְ אֶלָּסָר--אַרְבָּעָה מְלָכִים אֶת-הַחֲמִשָּׁה
Et-Kedarla'omer melech Eilam veTid'al melech Goyim ve'Amrafel melech Shin'ar ve'Aryoch melech Elasar arba'ah melachim et-hachamishah.
9. against Kedarla'omer king of Eilam, Tid'al king of Goyim, Amrafel king of Shin'ar, and Arioch king of Elasar. There were four kings against the five.
י וְעֵמֶק הַשִּׂדִּים בֶּאֱרֹת בֶּאֱרֹת חֵמָר וַיָּנֻסוּ מֶלֶךְ-סְדֹם וַעֲמֹרָה וַיִּפְּלוּ-שָׁמָּה וְהַנִּשְׁאָרִים הֶרָה נָּסוּ
Ve'Emek haSiddim be'erot be'erot chemar vayanusu melech Sedom va'Amorah vayiplu-shamah vehanish'arim herah nasu.
10. The Valley of Siddim was covered with tar pits. The kings of Sedom and Amorah were routed and they fell into them, while the others fled to the mountains.
יא וַיִּקְחוּ אֶת-כָּל-רְכֻשׁ סְדֹם וַעֲמֹרָה וְאֶת-כָּל-אָכְלָם--וַיֵּלֵכוּ
Vayikchu et-kol-rechush Sedom va'Amorah ve'et-kol-ochlam vayelechu.
11. [The victors] seized all the possessions and food supplies of Sedom and Amorah and they departed.
יב וַיִּקְחוּ אֶת-לוֹט וְאֶת-רְכֻשׁוֹ בֶּן-אֲחִי אַבְרָם וַיֵּלֵכוּ וְהוּא יֹשֵׁב בִּסְדֹם
Vayikchu et-Lot ve'et-rechusho ben-achi Avram vayelechu vehu yoshev biSedom.
12. With them they took Avram's nephew Lot along with his possessions. He had been living in Sedom.
יג וַיָּבֹא הַפָּלִיט וַיַּגֵּד לְאַבְרָם הָעִבְרִי וְהוּא שֹׁכֵן בְּאֵלֹנֵי מַמְרֵא הָאֱמֹרִי אֲחִי אֶשְׁכֹּל וַאֲחִי עָנֵר וְהֵם בַּעֲלֵי בְרִית-אַבְרָם
Vayavo hapalit vayaged le-Avram ha'Ivri vehu shochen be'elonei Mamre ha'Emori achi Eshkol va'achi Aner vehem ba'alei vrit-Avram.
13. The fugitive came and brought the news to Avram the Hebrew, who was camping in the plains of Mamre the Emori, brother of Eshkol and Aner. They were Avram's allies.
יד וַיִּשְׁמַע אַבְרָם כִּי נִשְׁבָּה אָחִיו; וַיָּרֶק אֶת-חֲנִיכָיו יְלִידֵי בֵיתוֹ שְׁמֹנָה עָשָׂר וּשְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת וַיִּרְדֹּף עַד-דָּן
Vayishma Avram ki nishbah achiv vayarek et-chanichav yelidei veito shmonah asar ushlosh me'ot vayirdof ad-Dan.
14. When Avram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive, he mustered his disciples who were born in the household, 318 [men], and he gave chase as far as Dan.
טו וַיֵּחָלֵק עֲלֵיהֶם לַיְלָה הוּא וַעֲבָדָיו וַיַּכֵּם וַיִּרְדְּפֵם עַד-חוֹבָה אֲשֶׁר מִשְּׂמֹאל לְדַמָּשֶׂק
Vayechalek aleihem lailah hu va'avadav vayakem vayirdefem ad-Chovah asher mismol le-Damasek.
15. He divided [his forces] against them at night - there was him and his servants. He deeated [the enemy] and pursued them as far as Chovah, which is to the left of Damasek.
טז וַיָּשֶׁב אֵת כָּל-הָרְכֻשׁ וְגַם אֶת-לוֹט אָחִיו וּרְכֻשׁוֹ הֵשִׁיב וְגַם אֶת-הַנָּשִׁים וְאֶת-הָעָם
Vayashev et kol-harechush vegam et-Lot achiv urechusho heshiv vegam et-hanashim ve'et ha'am.
16. He brought back all the property. He also brought back his kinsman Lot and his property, along with the women and the people.
יז וַיֵּצֵא מֶלֶךְ-סְדֹם לִקְרָאתוֹ אַחֲרֵי שׁוּבוֹ מֵהַכּוֹת אֶת-כְּדָרְלָעֹמֶר וְאֶת-הַמְּלָכִים אֲשֶׁר אִתּוֹ--אֶל-עֵמֶק שָׁוֵה הוּא עֵמֶק הַמֶּלֶךְ
Vayetze melech-Sedom likrato acharei shuvo mehakot et-Kdarla'omer ve'et-hamelachim asher ito el-Emek Shaveh hu Emek haMelech.
17. After he returned from his victory over Kedarla'omer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sedom came out to greet him, to Level Valley (that is, King's Valley).
יח וּמַלְכִּי-צֶדֶק מֶלֶךְ שָׁלֵם הוֹצִיא לֶחֶם וָיָיִן וְהוּא כֹהֵן לְאֵל עֶלְיוֹן
UMalki-Tzedek melech Shalem hotzi lechem vayayin vehu chohen le-El Elyon.
18. Malchi-zedek king of Sedom brought out bread and wine. He was priest of G-d, the Most High.
יט וַיְבָרְכֵהוּ וַיֹּאמַר: בָּרוּךְ אַבְרָם לְאֵל עֶלְיוֹן קֹנֵה שָׁמַיִם וָאָרֶץ
Vayevarechehu vayomar baruch Avram le-El Elyon Koneh shamayim va'aretz.
19. He blessed [Avram], and said, "Blessed be Avram to G-d Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth.
כ וּבָרוּךְ אֵל עֶלְיוֹן אֲשֶׁר-מִגֵּן צָרֶיךָ בְּיָדֶךָ וַיִּתֶּן-לוֹ מַעֲשֵׂר מִכֹּל
Uvaruch El Elyon asher-migen tzareycha beyadecha vayiten-lo ma'aser mikol.
20. And blessed be G-d Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand." [Avram] gave him a tenth of everything.
כא וַיֹּאמֶר מֶלֶךְ-סְדֹם אֶל-אַבְרָם: תֶּן-לִי הַנֶּפֶשׁ וְהָרְכֻשׁ קַח-לָךְ
Vayomer melech Sedom el-Avram ten-li hanefesh veharechush kach-lach.
21. The king of Sedom said to Avram, "Give me the people, but keep the property."
כב וַיֹּאמֶר אַבְרָם אֶל-מֶלֶךְ סְדֹם: הֲרִמֹתִי יָדִי אֶל-יְהוָה אֵל עֶלְיוֹן קֹנֵה שָׁמַיִם וָאָרֶץ
Vayomer Avram el-melech Sedom harimoti yadi el-HASHEM El Elyon Koneh shamayim va'aretz.
22. Avram said to the king of Sedom, "I have lifted my hand [in an oath] to HASHEM, the Highest Power, Possessor of heaven and earth.
כג אִם-מִחוּט וְעַד שְׂרוֹךְ-נַעַל וְאִם-אֶקַּח מִכָּל-אֲשֶׁר-לָךְ וְלֹא תֹאמַר אֲנִי הֶעֱשַׁרְתִּי אֶת-אַבְרָם
Im-michut ve'ad sroch-na'al ve'im-ekach mikol-asher-lach velo tomar ani he'esharti et-Avram.
23. Not a thread or a shoelace - I will not take anything that is yours, so that you should not be able to say, 'I have made Avram wealthy.'
כד בִּלְעָדַי רַק אֲשֶׁר אָכְלוּ הַנְּעָרִים וְחֵלֶק הָאֲנָשִׁים אֲשֶׁר הָלְכוּ אִתִּי: עָנֵר אֶשְׁכֹּל וּמַמְרֵא הֵם יִקְחוּ חֶלְקָם
Bile'adai rak asher achlu hane'arim vechelek ha'anashim asher halchu iti Aner Eshkol uMamre hem yichu chelkam.
24. Nothing for me, other than what the young men have eaten and the portion of the men who went with me, Aner, Eshkol and Mamre - let them take their share."
