Bereishit Chapter 4

 

א וְהָאָדָם יָדַע אֶת-חַוָּה אִשְׁתּוֹ וַתַּהַר וַתֵּלֶד אֶת-קַיִן וַתֹּאמֶר קָנִיתִי אִישׁ אֶת-יְהוָה

 

 

Veha'adam yada et-Chavah ishto vatahar vateled et-Kayin vatomer kaniti ish et-HASHEM.

 

 

1. The man knew his wife Chavah, she conceived, and she gave birth to Kayin. She said, "I have gained a man with HASHEM."

 

 

ב וַתֹּסֶף לָלֶדֶת אֶת-אָחִיו אֶת-הָבֶל וַיְהִי-הֶבֶל רֹעֵה צֹאן וְקַיִן הָיָה עֹבֵד אֲדָמָה

 

 

Vatosef laledet et-achiv et-Havel vayehi-Hevel ro'eh tzon veKayin hayah oved adamah.

 

 

2. Again, she gave birth, to his brother Hevel. Hevel became a shepherd, while Kayin was a worker of the soil.

 

 

ג וַיְהִי מִקֵּץ יָמִים וַיָּבֵא קַיִן מִפְּרִי הָאֲדָמָה מִנְחָה--לַיהוָה

 

 

Vayehi miketz yamim vayave Kayin miperi ha'adamah minchah l'HASHEM.

 

 

3. It was at the end of days, and Kayin brought of the fruit of the soil, an offering to HASHEM.

 

 

ד וְהֶבֶל הֵבִיא גַם-הוּא מִבְּכֹרוֹת צֹאנוֹ וּמֵחֶלְבֵהֶן וַיִּשַׁע יְהוָה אֶל-הֶבֶל וְאֶל-מִנְחָתוֹ

 

 

VeHevel hevi gam-hu mibechorot tzono umechelvehen vayisha HASHEM el-Hevel ve'el-minchato.

 

 

4. Hevel also brought of the firstlings of his sheep and of their fat. HASHEM paid heed to Hevel and to his offering.

 

 

ה וְאֶל-קַיִן וְאֶל-מִנְחָתוֹ לֹא שָׁעָה וַיִּחַר לְקַיִן מְאֹד וַיִּפְּלוּ פָּנָיו

 

 

Ve'el-Kayin ve'el-minchato lo sha'ah vayichar le-Kayin me'od vayiplu panav.

 

 

5. But to Kayin and his offering, He paid no heed. Kayin became very furious, and his face fell.

 

 

ו וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל-קָיִן לָמָּה חָרָה לָךְ וְלָמָּה נָפְלוּ פָנֶיךָ

 

 

Vayomer HASHEM el-Kayin lamah charah lach velamah nafelu fanecha.

 

 

6. HASHEM said to Kayin, "Why are you furious? Why has your face fallen?

 

 

ז הֲלוֹא אִם-תֵּיטִיב שְׂאֵת וְאִם לֹא תֵיטִיב לַפֶּתַח חַטָּאת רֹבֵץ; וְאֵלֶיךָ תְּשׁוּקָתוֹ וְאַתָּה תִּמְשָׁל-בּוֹ

 

 

Halo im-teytiv se'et ve'im lo teytiv lapetach chatat rovetz ve'elecha teshukato ve'atah timshol-bo.

 

 

7. If you do good, will there not be elevation? And if not, sin crouches at the opening. To you is its desire, but you can dominate it."

 

 

ח וַיֹּאמֶר קַיִן אֶל-הֶבֶל אָחִיו וַיְהִי בִּהְיוֹתָם בַּשָּׂדֶה וַיָּקָם קַיִן אֶל-הֶבֶל אָחִיו וַיַּהַרְגֵהוּ

 

 

Vayomer Kayin el-Hevel achiv vayehi biheyotam basadeh vayakom Kayin el-Hevel achiv vayahargehu.

 

 

8. Kayin spoke to Hevel his brother. They happened to be in the field, and Kayin rose up against Hevel his brother, and he killed him.

 

 

ט וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל-קַיִן אֵי הֶבֶל אָחִיךָ וַיֹּאמֶר לֹא יָדַעְתִּי הֲשֹׁמֵר אָחִי אָנֹכִי

 

 

Vayomer HASHEM el-Kayin ei Hevel achicha vayomer lo yadati hashomer achi anochi.

 

 

9. HASHEM said to Kayin, "Where is Hevel your brother?" [Kayin] said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?"

 

 

י וַיֹּאמֶר מֶה עָשִׂיתָ קוֹל דְּמֵי אָחִיךָ צֹעֲקִים אֵלַי מִן-הָאֲדָמָה

 

 

Vayomer meh asita kol demei achicha tzoakim elai min-ha'adamah.

 

 

10. [G-d] said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is screaming to Me from the ground."

 

 

יא וְעַתָּה אָרוּר אָתָּה מִן-הָאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר פָּצְתָה אֶת-פִּיהָ לָקַחַת אֶת-דְּמֵי אָחִיךָ מִיָּדֶךָ

 

 

Ve'atah arur atah min-ha'adamah asher patzeta et-piha lakachat et-demei achicha miyadecha.

 

 

11. "Now, cursed are you from the ground which opened its mouth to take your brother's blood from your hand."

 

 

יב כִּי תַעֲבֹד אֶת-הָאֲדָמָה לֹא-תֹסֵף תֵּת-כֹּחָהּ לָךְ; נָע וָנָד תִּהְיֶה בָאָרֶץ

 

 

Ki ta'avod et-ha'adamah lo-tosef tet-kocha lach na vanad tihyeh va'aretz.

 

 

12. "When you work the soil, it will no longer give you of its strength. You will be restless and a wanderer on the earth."

 

 

יג וַיֹּאמֶר קַיִן אֶל-יְהוָה גָּדוֹל עֲו‍ֹנִי מִנְּשֹׂא

 

 

Vayomer Kayin el-HASHEM gadol avoni mineso.

 

 

13. Kayin said to HASHEM, "My sin is too great to bear."

 

 

יד הֵן גֵּרַשְׁתָּ אֹתִי הַיּוֹם מֵעַל פְּנֵי הָאֲדָמָה וּמִפָּנֶיךָ אֶסָּתֵר וְהָיִיתִי נָע וָנָד בָּאָרֶץ וְהָיָה כָל-מֹצְאִי יַהַרְגֵנִי

 

 

Hen gerashta oti hayom me'al penei ha'adamah umipanecha esater vehayiti na vanad ba'aretz vehayah chol- motze'i yahar'geni.

 

 

14. "Behold, today You have banished me from the face of the ground, and from Your face I am concealed. I have become restless, a wanderer on the earth; whoever finds me will kill me."

 

 

טו וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ יְהוָה לָכֵן כָּל-הֹרֵג קַיִן שִׁבְעָתַיִם יֻקָּם וַיָּשֶׂם יְהוָה לְקַיִן אוֹת לְבִלְתִּי הַכּוֹת-אֹתוֹ כָּל-מֹצְאוֹ

 

 

Vayomer lo HASHEM lachen kol-horeg Kayin shiv'atayim yukam vayasem HASHEM le-Kayin ot levilti hakot-oto kol-motze'o.

 

 

15. HASHEM said to him, "Therefore, whoever kills Kayin shall suffer sevenfold vengeance." HASHEM placed a mark on Kayin so that whoever found him would not kill him.

 

 

טז וַיֵּצֵא קַיִן מִלִּפְנֵי יְהוָה וַיֵּשֶׁב בְּאֶרֶץ-נוֹד קִדְמַת-עֵדֶן

 

 

Vayetze Kayin milifnei HASHEM vayeshev be'eretz-Nod kid'mat-Eden.

 

 

16. Kayin went out from before HASHEM, and he dwelt in the land of Nod, to east of Eden.

 

 

יז וַיֵּדַע קַיִן אֶת-אִשְׁתּוֹ וַתַּהַר וַתֵּלֶד אֶת-חֲנוֹךְ וַיְהִי, בֹּנֶה עִיר וַיִּקְרָא שֵׁם הָעִיר כְּשֵׁם בְּנוֹ חֲנוֹךְ

 

 

Vayeda Kayin et-ishto vatahar vateled et-Chanoch vayehi boneh ir vayikra shem ha'ir keshem beno Chanoch.

 

 

17. Kayin knew his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Chanoch. [Kayin] was building a city, and he named the city Chanoch, after his son.

 

 

יח וַיִּוָּלֵד לַחֲנוֹךְ אֶת-עִירָד וְעִירָד יָלַד אֶת-מְחוּיָאֵל וּמְחִיָּיאֵל יָלַד אֶת-מְתוּשָׁאֵל וּמְתוּשָׁאֵל יָלַד אֶת-לָמֶךְ

 

 

Vayivaled la-Chanoch et-Yirad veYirad yalad et-Mechuyael uMechiyael yalad et-Metushael uMetushael yalad et-Lamech.

 

 

18. Chanoch had a son Yirad. Yirad had a son Mechuyael, Mechuyael had a son Metushael, and Metushael, had a son Lemech.

יט וַיִּקַּח-לוֹ לֶמֶךְ שְׁתֵּי נָשִׁים שֵׁם הָאַחַת עָדָה וְשֵׁם הַשֵּׁנִית צִלָּה

 

 

Vayikach-lo Lemech shtei nashim shem ha'achat Adah veshem hashenit Tzillah.

 

 

19. Lemech married two women. One was named Adah; the second one's name was Tzillah.

 

 

כ וַתֵּלֶד עָדָה אֶת-יָבָל הוּא הָיָה--אֲבִי יֹשֵׁב אֹהֶל וּמִקְנֶה

 

 

Vateled Adah et-Yaval hu hayah avi yoshev ohel umikneh.

 

 

20. Adah gave birth to Yaval; he was the father of all who live in tents and keep herds.

 

 

כא וְשֵׁם אָחִיו יוּבָל הוּא הָיָה--אֲבִי כָּל-תֹּפֵשׂ כִּנּוֹר וְעוּגָב

 

 

Veshem achiv Yuval hu hayah avi kol-tofes kinnor ve'ugav.

 

 

21. The name of his brother was Yuval; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute.

 

 

כב וְצִלָּה גַם-הִוא יָלְדָה אֶת-תּוּבַל קַיִן--לֹטֵשׁ כָּל-חֹרֵשׁ נְחֹשֶׁת וּבַרְזֶל וַאֲחוֹת תּוּבַל-קַיִן נַעֲמָה

 

 

VeTzillah gam-hi yaldah et-Tuval Kayin lotesh kol-choresh nechoshet uvarzel va'achot Tuval-kayin Naamah.

 

 

22. Tzillah also gave birth, to Tuval Kayin, a forger of all implements of copper and iron. Tuval Kayin's sister was Naamah.

Shishi

 

כג וַיֹּאמֶר לֶמֶךְ לְנָשָׁיו עָדָה וְצִלָּה שְׁמַעַן קוֹלִי--נְשֵׁי לֶמֶךְ הַאְזֵנָּה אִמְרָתִי כִּי אִישׁ הָרַגְתִּי לְפִצְעִי וְיֶלֶד לְחַבֻּרָתִי

 

 

Vayomer Lemech lenashvav Adah veTzillah shma'an koli neshei Lemech ha'azenah imrati ki ish haragti lefitz'i veyeled lechaburati.

 

 

23. Lemech said to his wives, "Adah and Tzillah, hear my voice, wives of Lemech listen to my speech. For I have killed a man by my wound, and a child by my bruise.

 

 

כד כִּי שִׁבְעָתַיִם יֻקַּם-קָיִן וְלֶמֶךְ שִׁבְעִים וְשִׁבְעָה

 

 

Ki shiv'atayim yukam-Kayin veLemech shiv'im veshiv'ah.

 

 

24. If Kayin shall have sevenfold vengeance, then for Lemech it shall be seventy-seven fold."

 

 

כה וַיֵּדַע אָדָם עוֹד אֶת-אִשְׁתּוֹ וַתֵּלֶד בֵּן וַתִּקְרָא אֶת-שְׁמוֹ שֵׁת כִּי שָׁת-לִי אֱלֹהִים זֶרַע אַחֵר--תַּחַת הֶבֶל כִּי הֲרָגוֹ קָיִן

 

 

Vayeda Adam od et-ishto vateled ben vatikra et-shemo Shet ki shat-li Elokim zera acher tachat Hevel ki harago Kayin.

 

 

25. Adam knew his wife again, and she gave birth to a son. She named him Shet - "Because G-d has granted me other offspring in place of Hevel, because Kayin killed him."

 

 

כו וּלְשֵׁת גַּם-הוּא יֻלַּד-בֵּן וַיִּקְרָא אֶת-שְׁמוֹ אֱנוֹשׁ; אָז הוּחַל לִקְרֹא בְּשֵׁם יְהוָה

 

 

Ule-Shet gam-hu yulad-ben vayikra et-shemo Enosh az huchal likro beshem HASHEM.

 

 

26. To Shet also was born a son, and he named him Enosh. Then it was initiated to call in the name of HASHEM.
