Parashat Shemot
The Generation Passes; Pharaoh's Plot; Infanticide
1:1 Ve'eleh shemot bnei Yisrael haba'im Mitzraymah et Yaakov ish uveito ba'u.
And these are the names of the Children of Yisrael who were coming to Egypt; with Yaakov, each man and his household came.
2 Reuven Shimon Levi viYehudah.
Reuven, Shimon, Levi, and Yehudah;
3 Yissachar Zvulun uBinyamin.
Yissachar, Zevulun, and Binyamin;
4 Dan veNaftali Gad ve'Asher.
Dan and Naftali; Gad and Asher.
5 Vayehi kol-nefesh yotz'ei yerech-Yaakov shiv'im nafesh veYosef hayah veMitzrayim.
And all the persons who emerged from Yaakov's loins were seventy souls, and Yosef was in Egypt.
6 Vayamot Yosef vechol-echav vechol hador hahu.
Yosef died, and all his brothers and that entire generation.
7 Uvenei Yisrael paru vayishretzu vayirbu vaya'atzmu bime'od me'od vatimale ha'aretz otam.
The Children of Yisrael were fruitful, teemed, increased, and became strong - very, very much so; and the land became filled with them.
8 Vayakom melech-chadash al-Mitzrayim asher lo-yada et-Yosef.
A new king arose over Egypt, who did not know of Yosef.
9 Vayomer el-amo hineh am benei Yisrael rav ve'atzum mimenu.
He said to his people, "Behold! the people, the Children of Yisrael, are more numerous and stronger than we.
10 Havah nitchakemah lo pen-yirbeh vehayah ki-tikrenah milchamah venosaf gam-hu al-sonenu venilcham-banu ve'alah min-ha'aretz.
Come, let us outsmart it lest it become numerous and it may be that if a war will occur, it, too, may join our enemies, and wage war against us and go up from the land."
11 Vayasimu alav sarey misim lema'an anoto besivlotam vayiven arey miskenot le-Par'oh et-Pitom ve'et-Ra'amses.
So they appointed taskmasters over it in order to afflict it with their burdens; it built storage cities for Pharaoh, Pitom and Ra'amses.
12 Vecha'asher ye'anu oto ken yirbeh vechen yifrotz vayakutzu mipeney benei Yisra'el.
But as much as they would afflict it, so it would increase and so it would spread out; and they became disgusted because of the Children of Yisrael.
13 Vaya'avidu Mitzrayim et-benei Yisrael befarech.
Egypt enslaved the Children of Yisrael with crushing harshness.
14 Vayemareru et-chayeihem ba'avodah kashah bechomer uvilvenim uvechol-avodah basadeh et kol-avodatam asher-avdu vahem befarech.
They embittered their lives with hard work, with mortar and with bricks, and with every labor of the field; all their labors that they performed with them were with crushing harshness.
15 Vayomer melech Mitzrayim lameyaldot ha'Ivriot asher shem ha'achat Shifrah veshem hashenit Puah.
The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the first was Shifrah and the name of the second was Puah -
16 Vayomer beyaledchen et-ha'Ivriot ur'iten al-ha'ovnayim im-ben hu vahamiten oto ve'im-bat hi vachayah.
and he said, "When you deliver the Hebrew women, and you see them on the birth stool; if it is a son, you are to kill him, and if it is a daughter, she shall live."
17 Vatir'ena hameyaldot et-ha'Elokim velo asu ka'asher diber aleihen melech Mitzrayim vatechayeyna et-hayeladim.
But the midwives feared G-d and they did not do as the king of Egypt spoke to them, and they caused the boys to live.
Sheni
18 Vayikra melech-Mitzrayim lameyaldot vayomer lahen madua asiten hadavar hazeh vatchayeyna et-hayeladim.
The king of Egypt summoned the midwives and said to them, "Why have you done this thing, that you have caused the boys to live!"
19 Vatomarna hameyaldot el-Par'oh ki lo chanashim haMitzriot ha'Ivriot ki chayot henah beterem tavo alehen hameyaledet veyaladu.
The midwives said to Pharaoh, "Because the Hebrew women are unlike the Egyptian women, for they are experts; before the midwife comes to them, they have given birth."
20 Vayeitev Elokim lameyaleot vayirev ha'am vaya'atzmu me'od.
G-d benefited the midwives - and the people increased and became very strong.
21 Vayehi ki yar'u hameyaldot et-ha'Elokim vaya'as lahem batim.
And it was because the midwives feared G-d that He made them houses.
22 Vayetzav Par'oh lechol-amo lemor kol-haben hayilod haYe'orah tashlichuhu vechol-habat techayun.
Pharaoh commanded his entire people, saying, "Every son that will be born - into the River shall you throw him! And every daughter shall you keep alive!"
Birth of Moshe
2:1 Vayelech ish mibeit Levi vayikach et-bat-Levi.
A man went from the house of Levi and he took a daughter of Levi.
2 Vatahar ha'ishah vateled ben vatere oto ki-tov hu vatitzpenehu shloshah yerachim.
The women conceived and gave birth to a son. She saw that he was good and she hid him for three months.
3 Velo-yakhlah od hatzfino vatikach-lo tevat gome vatachmerah vachemar uvazafet vatasem bah et-hayeled vatasem basuf al-sfat haYe'or.
She could not hide him any longer, so she took for him a wicker basket and smeared it with clay and pitch; she placed the child into it and placed it among the reeds at the bank of the River.
4 Vatetatzav achoto merachok lede'ah mah-ye'aseh lo.
His sister stationed herself at a distance to know what would be done with him.
5 Vatered bat-Par'oh lirchotz al-haYe'or vena'aroteiha holkhot al-yad haYe'or vatere et-hatevah betoch hasuf vatishlach et-amatah vatikacheha.
Pharaoh's daughter went down to bathe by the River and her maidens walked along the River. She saw the basket among the reeds and she sent her maidservant and she took it.
6 Vatiftach vatir'ehu et-hayeled vehineh na'ar bocheh vatachmol alav vatomer miyaldei ha'Ivrim zeh.
She opened it and saw him, the child, and behold! a youth was crying. She took pity on him and said, "This is one of the Hebrew boys."
7 Vatomer achoto el-bat-Par'oh ha'elekh vekarati lach ishah meineket min ha'Ivriot veteinik lakh et-hayaled.
His sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, "Shall I go and summon for you a wet nurse from the Hebrew women, who will nurse the boy for you?"
8 Vatomer-lah bat-Par'oh lechi vatelech ha'almah vatikra et-em hayaled.
The daughter of Pharaoh said, "Go." The girl went and summoned the boy's mother.
9 Vatomer-lah bat-Par'oh heylichi et-hayeled hazeh veheynikihu li va'ani eten et-scharech vatikach ha'ishah hayeled vatenikehu.
Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this boy and nurse him for me, and I will give you pay." So the woman took the boy and nursed him.
10 Vayigdal hayeled vatevi'ehu levat-Par'oh vayehi-lah leven vatikra shemo Moshe vatomer ki min-hamayim meshitihu.
The boy grew up and she brought him to the daughter of Pharaoh and he was a son to her. She called his name Moshe, as she said, "For I drew him from the water."

Moshe Identifies With His People
11 Vayehi bayamim hahem vayigdal Moshe vayetze el-echav vayar besivlotam vayar ish Mitzri makeh ish-Ivri me'echav.
It happened in those days that Moshe grew up and went out to his brethren and observed their burdens; and he saw an Egyptian man striking a Hebrew man, of his brethren.
12 Vayifen koh vachoh vayar ki ein ish vayach et-haMitzri vayitmenehu bachol.
He turned this way and that and saw that there was no man, so he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.
13 Vayetze bayom hasheni vehineh shnei-anashim Ivrim nitzim vayomer larasha lamah takeh re'echa.
He went out the next day and behold! two Hebrew men were fighting. He said to the wicked one, "Why would you strike your fellow?"
14 Vayomer mi samecha le'ish sar veshofet aleinu halehorgeni atah omer ka'asher haragta et-haMitzri vayira Moshe vayomar achen noda hadavar.
He replied, "Who appointed you as a dignitary, a ruler, and a judge over us? Do you propose to murder me, as you murdered the Egyptian?"
15 Vayishma Par'oh et-hadavar hazeh vayevakesh laharog et-Moshe vayivrach Moshe mipnei Par'oh vayeshev be'eretz-Midyan vayeshev al-habe'er.
Pharaoh heard about this matter and sought to kill Moshe, so Moshe fled from before Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midyan. He sat by a well.
16 Ulechohen Midyan sheva banot vatavonah vatidlenah vatmalenah et-harehatim lehashkot tzon avihen.
The minister of Midyan had seven daughters; they came and drew water and filled the troughs to water their father's sheep.
17 Vayavo'u haro'im vayegarshum vayakom Moshe vayoshian vayashk et-tzonam.
The shepherds came and drove them away. Moshe got up and saved them and watered their sheep.
18 Vatavonah el-Reu'el avihen vayomer madua miharten bo hayom.
They came to Reu'el their father. He said, "How could you come so quickly today?"
19 Vatomarna ish Mitzri hitzilanu miyad haro'im vegam-daloh dalah lanu vayashk et-hatzon.
They replied, "An Egyptian man saved us from the shepherds, and he even drew water for us and watered our sheep."
20 Vayomer el-benotav ve'ayo lamah zeh azavten et-ha'ish kir'en lo veyochal lachem.
He said to his daughters, "Then where is he? Why did you leave the man? Summon him and let him eat bread!"
21 Vayo'el Moshe lashevet et-ha'ish vayiten et-Tzipporah vito le-Moshe.
Moshe desired to dwell with the man; and he gave his daughter Tzipporah to Moshe.
22 Vateled ben vayikra et-shemo Gershom ki amar ger hayiti be'eretz nochriyah.
She gave birth to a son and he named him Gershom, for he said, "I have been a stranger in a foreign land."
23 Vayehi vayamim harabim hahem vayamot melech Mitzrayim vaye'anechu venei-Yisrael min-ha'avodah vayiz'aku vata'al shav'atam el-ha'Elokim min-ha'avodah.
During those many days, it happened that the king of Egypt died, and the Children of Yisrael groaned because of the work and they cried out. Their outcry because of the work went up to G-d.
24 Vayishma Elokim et-na'akatam vayizkor Elokim et-brito et-Avraham et-Yitzchak ve'et-Yaakov.
G-d heard their moaning, and G-d remembered His covenant with Avraham, with Yitzchak, and with Yaakov.
25 Vayar EloKim et-benei Yisrael vayeda Elokim.
G-d saw the Children of Yisrael; and G-d knew.

The Burning Bush
3:1 UMoshe hayah ro'eh et-tzon Yitro chotno kohen Midyan vayinhag et-hatzon achar hamidbar vayavo el-har ha'Elokim Chorevah.
Moshe was shepherding the sheep of Yitro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midyan; he guided the sheep far into the wilderness, and he arrived at the Mountain of G-d, toward Chorev.
2 Vayera malach HASHEM elav belabat-esh mitokh hasneh vayar vehineh hasneh boer ba'esh vehasneh einenu ukal.
An angel of HASHEM appeared to him in a blaze of fire from amid the bush. He saw and behold! the bush was burning in the fire but the bush was not consumed.
3 Vayomer Moshe asurah-na ve'er'eh et-hamar'eh hagadol hazeh madua lo-yiv'ar hasneh.
Moshe thought, "I will turn aside now and look at this great sight - why will the bush not be burned?"
4 Vayar HASHEM ki sar lir'ot vayikra elav Elokim mitoch hasneh vayomer Moshe Moshe vayomer hineni.
HASHEM saw that he turned aside to see; and G-d called out to him from amid the bush and said, "Moshe, Moshe." And he replied, "Here I am!"
5 Vayomer al-tikrav halom shal-ne'aleicha me'al ragleicha ki hamakom asher atah omed alav admat-kodesh hu.
He said, "Do not come closer to here, remove your shoes from your feet, for the place upon which you stand is holy ground."
6 Vayomer anochi Elokei avicha Elokei Avraham Elokei Yitzchak ve'Elokei Yaakov vayaster Moshe panav ki yare mehabit el-ha'Elokim.
And He said, "I am the G-d of your father, the G-d of Avraham, the G-d of Yitzchak, and the G-d of Yaakov." Moshe hid his face, for he was afraid to gaze toward G-d.
7 Vayomer HASHEM ra'oh ra'iti et-oni ami asher beMitzrayim ve'et tza'akatam shamati mipenei nogsav ki yadati et-mach'ovav.
HASHEM said, "I have indeed seen the affliction of My people that is in Egypt and I have heard its outcry because of its taskmasters, for I have known of its sufferings.
8 Va'ered lehatzilo miyad Mitzrayim uleha'aloto min-ha'aretz hahi el-eretz tovah urechavah el-eretz zavat chalav udevash el-mekom haKnaani vehaChitti veha'Emori vehaPrizi vehaChivvi vehaYevusi.
I shall descend to rescue it from the hand of Egypt and to bring it up from that land to a good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Kenaani, the Chitti, the 'Emori, the Perizi, the Chivvi, and the Yevusi.
9 Ve'atah hineh tza'akat benei Yisrael ba'ah elay vegam-ra'iti et-halachatz asher Mitzrayim lochatzim otam.
And now, behold! the outcry of the Children of Yisrael has come to Me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.
10 Ve'atah lecha ve'eshlachacha el-Par'oh vehotze et-ami venei Yisrael mi-Mitzrayim.
And now, go and I shall dispatch you to Pharaoh and you shall take My people the Children of Yisrael out of Egypt."
11 Vayomer Moshe el-ha'Elokim mi anochi ki elech el-Par'oh vechi otzi et-bnei Yisrael mi-Mitzrayim.
Moshe replied to G-d, "Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and that I should take the Children of Yisrael out of Egypt?"
12 Vayomer ki eheyeh imach vezeh-lecha ha'ot ki anochi shlachticha behotzi'acha et-ha'am mi-Mitzrayim ta'avdun et-ha'Elokim al hahar hazeh.
And He said, "For I shall be with you - and this is your sign that I have sent you: When you take the people out of Egypt, you will serve G-d on this mountain."
13 Vayomer Moshe el-ha'Elokim hineh anochi va el-bnei Yisrael ve'amarti lahem Elokei avoteichem shlachani aleichem ve'amru-li mah-shmo mah omar alehem.
Moshe said to G-d, "Behold, when I come to the Children of Yisrael and say to them, 'The G-d of your forefathers has sent me to you,' and they say to me, 'What is His Name?' - what shall I say to them?"
14 Vayomer Elokim el-Moshe eheyeh asher eheyeh vayomer koh tomar livnei Yisrael eheyeh shlachani aleichem.
G-d answered Moshe, "I Shall Be As I Shall Be." And He said, "So shall you say to the Children of Yisrael, 'I Shall Be has sent me to you.'"

Moshe Doubts the People's Faith
4:1 Vaya'an Moshe vayomer vehen lo-ya'aminu li velo yishme'u bekoli ki yomru lo-nir'ah eleicha HASHEM.
Moshe responded and said, "But they will not believe me and they will not heed my voice, for they will say, 'HASHEM did not appear to you.'"
2 Vayomer elav HASHEM mah-zeh veyadecha vayomer mateh.
HASHEM said to him, "What is that in your hand?" and he said, "A staff."
3 Vayomer hashlichehu artzah vayashlichehu artzah vayehi lenachash vayanas Moshe mipanav.
He said, "Cast it on the ground," and he cast it on the ground and it became a snake. Moshe fled from it.
4 Vayomer HASHEM el-Moshe shlach yadecha ve'echoz biznavo vayishlach yado vayachazek bo vayehi lemateh bechapo.
HASHEM said to Moshe, "Stretch out your hand and grasp its tail." He stretched out his hand and grasped it tightly, and it became a staff in his palm.
5 Lema'an ya'aminu ki nir'ah eleycha HASHEM Elokei avotam Elokei Avraham Elokei Yitzchak v'Elokei Yaakov.
So that they shall believe that HASHEM, the G-d of their forefathers, appeared to you, the G-d of Avraham, the G-d of Yitzchak, and the G-d of Yaakov."
6 Vayomer HASHEM lo od have-na yadecha becheikecha vayave yado becheyko vayotzi'ah vehineh yado metzora'at kashaleg.

7 Vayomer hashev yadecha el-cheikecha vayashev yado el-cheiko vayotzi'ah mecheiko vehineh-shavah kivesaro.
He said, "Return your hand to your bosom," and he returned his hand to his bosom; then he removed it from his bosom and behold, it reverted to be like his flesh.

And it shall be that if they do not believe even these two signs and do not heed your voice, then you shall take from the water of the River and pour it out on the dry land, and the water that you shall take from the River will become blood when it is on the dry land."
10 Vayomer Moshe el-HASHEM bi Ad-nai lo ish devarim anochi gam mitmol gam mishilshom gam me'az dabercha el-avdecha ki chevad-peh uchevad lashon anochi.
Moshe replied to HASHEM, "Please, my Master, I am not a man of words, not since yesterday, nor since the day before yesterday, nor since You first spoke to Your servant, for I am heavy of mouth and heavy of speech."
11 Vayomer HASHEM elav mi sam peh la'adam o mi-yasum ilem o cheresh o fike'ach o iver halo anochi HASHEM.

Moshe Sets Out For Egypt

So Moshe went and returned to Yeter, his father-in-law, and said to him, "Let me now go back to my brethren who are in Egypt, and see if they are still alive." And Yitro said to Moshe, "Go in peace."
19 Vayomer HASHEM el-Moshe beMidyan lech shuv Mitzrayim ki-metu kol-ha'anashim hamevakshim et-nafshecha.
HASHEM said to Moshe in Midyan, Go, return to Egypt, for all the people who seek your life have died."
20 Vayikach Moshe et-ishto ve'et-banav vayarkivem al-hachamor vayashov artzah Mitzrayim vayikach Moshe et-mateh ha'Elokim beyado.
So Moshe took his wife and sons, mounted them on the donkey, and returned to the land of Egypt; and Moshe took the staff of G-d in his hand.
21 Vayomer HASHEM el-Moshe belechtecha lashuv Mitzraymah re'eh kol-hamoftim asher-samti veyadecha va'asitam lifnei Par'oh va'ani achazek et-libo velo yeshalach et-ha'am.

22 Ve'amarta el-Par'oh koh amar HASHEM beni vechori Yisrael.

24 Vayehi vaderech bamalon vayifgeshehu HASHEM vayevakesh hamito.
It was on the way, in the lodging, that HASHEM encountered him and sought to kill him.
25 Vatikach Tzipporah tzor vatikhrot et-orlat benah vataga leraglav vatomer ki chatan-damim atah-li.
So Tzipporah took a sharp stone and cut off the foreskin of her son and touched it to his feet; and she said, "You caused my bridegroom's bloodshed!"
