The Golden Calf

Now when the people saw that Moshe delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aharon, and said to him, "Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moshe, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him."

2 Vayomer alehem Aharon parku nizmei hazahav asher be'oznei nesheichem bneichem uvenoteichem vehavi'u elai.
And Aharon said to them, "Break off the golden earrings which are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me."

3 Vayitparku kol-ha'am et-nizmei hazahav asher be'ozneihem vayavi'u el-Aharon.
So all the people broke off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them to Aharon.

4 Vayikach miyadam vayatzar oto bacheret vaya'asehu egel masechah vayomeru eleh eloheicha Yisrael asher he'elucha me'eretz Mitzrayim.
And he received the gold from their hand, and he fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made a molded calf. Then they said, "This is your god, O Yisrael, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!"

5 Vayar Aharon vayiven mizbe'ach lefanav vayikra Aharon vayomar chag l'HASHE machar.
So when Aharon saw it, he built an altar before it. And Aharon made a proclamation and said, "Tomorrow is a festival for HASHEM.'

6 Vayashkimu mimacharat vaya'alu olot vayagishu shlamim vayeshev ha'am le'echol veshato vayakumu letzachek.
Then they rose early on the next day, offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

7 Vayedaber HASHEM el-Moshe lech-red ki shichet amecha asher he'eleita me'eretz Mitzrayim.
And HASHEM said to Moshe,
"Go, get down! For your people whom you brought out of the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves.

8 Saru maher min-haderech asher tzivitim asu lahem egel masechah vayishtahavu-lo vayizbechu-lo vayomeru eleh eloheicha Yisrael asher he'elucha me'eretz Mitzrayim.
They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them. They have made themselves a molded calf, and worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said, 'This is your god, O Yisrael, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!'"

9 Vayomer HASHEM el-Moshe ra'iti et-ha'am hazeh vehineh am-ksheh-oref hu.
And HASHEM said to Moshe,
"I have seen this people, and indeed it is a stiff-necked people!

10 Ve'atah hanichah li veyichar-api vahem va'achalem ve'e'eseh otcha legoy gadol.
Now therefore, let Me alone, that My wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them. And I will make of you a great nation."

11 Vayechal Moshe et-penei HASHEM Elokav vayomer lamah HASHEM yechereh apcha be'amecha asher hotzeta me'eretz Mitzrayim beho'ach gadol uveyad chazakah.
Then Moshe pleaded with HASHEM his G-d, and said: "HASHEM, why does Your wrath burn hot against Your people whom You have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?

12 Lamah yomeru Mitzrayim lemor bera'ah hotzi'am laharog otam beharim ulechalotam me'al penei ha'adamah shuv mecharon apecha vehinachem al-hara'ah le'amecha.
Why should the Egyptians speak, and say, 'He brought them out to harm them, to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth'? Turn from Your fierce wrath, and relent from this harm to Your people.

13 Zechor le-Avraham le-Yitzchak ule-Yisrael avadeicha asher nishbata lahem bach vatedaber alehem arbeh et-zar'achem kechochvei hashamayim vechol-ha'aretz hazot asher amarti eten lezar'achem venachalu le'olam.
Remember Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yisrael, Your servants, to whom You swore by Your own self, and said to them, 'I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven; and all this land that I have spoken of I give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.'"

14 Vayinachem HASHEM al-hara'ah asher diber la'asot le'amo.
So HASHEM relented from the harm which He said He would do to His people.

15 Vayifen vayered Moshe min-hahar ushnei luchot ha'edut beyado lukhot ktuvim mishnei evreihem mizeh umizeh hem ktuvim.
And Moshe turned and went down from the mountain, and the two Tablets of the Testimony were in his hand. The tablets were written on both sides; on the one side and on the other they were written.

16 Vehaluchot ma'aseh Elokim hemah vehamichtav mikhtav Elokim hu charut al-haluchot.
Now the Tablets were the work of G-d, and the writing was the writing of G-d engraved on the Tablets.

17 Vayishma Yehoshua et-kol ha'am bere'oh vayomer el-Moshe kol milchamah bamachaneh.
And when Yehoshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moshe, "There is a noise of war in the camp."

18 Vayomer ein kol anot gvurah ve'ein kol anot chalushah kol anot anochi shomea.
But he said: "It is not the noise of the shout of victory, nor the noise of the cry of defeat, but the sound of singing I hear."

19 Vayehi ka'asher karav el-hamachaneh vayar et-ha'egel umecholot vayichar-af Moshe vayashlech miyadav et-haluchot vayeshaber otam tachat hahar.
So it was, as soon as he came near the camp, that he saw the calf and the dancing. So Moshe's anger became hot, and he cast the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain.

20 Vayikach et-ha'egel asher asu vayisrof ba'esh vayitchan ad asher-dak vayizer al-pnei hamayim vayashk et-benei Yisrael.
Then he took the calf which they had made, burned it in the fire, and ground it to powder; and he scattered it on the water and made the children of Yisrael drink it.

21 Vayomer Moshe el-Aharon meh-asah lecha ha'am hazeh ki-heveta alav chata'ah gedolah.
And Moshe said to Aharon, "What did this people do to you that you have brought so great a sin upon them?"

22 Vayomer Aharon al-yichar af adoni atah yadata et-ha'am ki vera hu.
So Aharon said, "Do not let the anger of my master become hot. You know the people, that they are set on evil.

23 Vayomru li aseh-lanu elohim asher yelchu lefaneinu ki-zeh Moshe ha'ish asher he'elanu me'eretz Mitzrayim lo yadanu meh-hayah lo.
For they said to me, 'Make us gods that shall go before us; as for this Moshe, the man who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.'

24 Va'omar lahem lemi zahav hitparaku vayitnu-li va'ashlichehu va'esh vayetze ha'egel hazeh.
And I said to them, 'Whoever has any gold, let them break it off.' So they gave it to me, and I cast it into the fire, and this calf came out."

25 Vayar Moshe et-ha'am ki farua hu ki-fera'oh Aharon leshimtzah bekameihem.
Now when Moshe saw that the people were unrestrained (for Aharon had not restrained them, to their shame among their enemies),

26 Vaya'amod Moshe besha'ar hamachaneh vayomer mi l'HASHEM elay vaye'asfu elav kol-benei Levi.
then Moshe stood in the entrance of the camp, and said, "Whoever is on HASHEM's side--come to me." And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him.

27 Vayomer lahem koh-amar HASHEM Elokei Yisrael simu ish charbo al-yerecho ivru vashuvu misha'ar lasha'ar bamachaneh vehirgu ish-et-achiv ve'ish et-re'ehu ve'ish et-krovo.
And he said to them, "Thus says HASHEM G-d of Yisrael: 'Let every man put his sword on his side, and go in and out from entrance to entrance throughout the camp, and let every man kill his brother, every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.'"

28 Vaya'asu vnei-Levi kidvar Moshe vayipol min-ha'am bayom hahu ki shloshet alfey ish.
So the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moshe. And about three thousand men of the people fell that day.

29 Vayomer Moshe mil'u yedechem hayom l'HASHEM ki ish bivno uve'achiv velatet aleichem hayom berachah.
Then Moshe said, "Consecrate yourselves today to HASHEM, that He may bestow on you a blessing this day, for every man has opposed his son and his brother."

30 Vayehi mimochorat vayomer Moshe el-ha'am atem chatatem chata'ah gedolah ve'atah e'eleh el-HASHEM ulai achaprah be'ad chatatchem.
Now it came to pass on the next day that Moshe said to the people, "You have committed a great sin. So now I will go up to HASHEM; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin."

31 Vayashav Moshe el-HASHEM vayomar ana chata ha'am hazeh chata'ah gedolah vaya'asu lahem elohei zahav.
Then Moshe returned to HASHEM and said, "Oh, these people have committed a great sin, and have made for themselves a gods of gold!

32 Ve'atah im-tisa chatatam ve'im-ayin mecheni na misifrecha asher katavta.
Yet now, if You will forgive their sin--but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written."

33 Vayomer HASHEM el-Moshe mi asher chata-li emchenu misifri.
And HASHEM said to Moshe,
"Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book.

34 Ve'atah lech necheh et-ha'am el asher-dibarti lach hineh mal'achi yelech lefaneicha uveyom pokdi ufakadeti alehem chatatam.
Now therefore, go, lead the people to the place of which I have spoken to you. Behold, My angel shall go before you. Nevertheless, in the day when I visit for punishment, I will visit punishment upon them for their sin."

35 Vayigof HASHEM et-ha'am al asher asu et-ha'egel asher asah Aharon.
So HASHEM plagued the people because of what they did with the calf which Aharon made.

The Aftermath

33:1 Vayedaber HASHEM el-Moshe lech aleh mizeh atah veha'am asher he'elita me'eretz Mitzrayim el-ha'aretz asher nishbati le-Avraham le-Yitzchak ule-Yaakov lemor lezar'acha etnenah.
Then HASHEM said to Moshe,
"Depart and go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov, saying, 'To your descendants I will give it.'

2 Veshalachti lefaneicha mal'ach vegerashti et-haKna'ani ha'Emori vehaChiti vehaPrizi haChivi vehaYevusi.
And I will send My angel before you, and I will drive out the Kenaani and the Emori and the Chiti and the Prizi and the Chivi and the Yevusi.

3 El-eretz zavat chalav udvash ki lo e'eleh bekirbecha ki am-ksheh-oref atah pen-achelcha badarech.
Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in your midst, lest I consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people."

4 Vayishma ha'am et-hadavar hara hazeh vayit'abalu velo-shatu ish edyo alav.
And when the people heard this bad news, they mourned, and no one put on his ornaments.

5 Vayomer HASHEM el-Moshe emor el-benei-Yisrael atem am-ksheh-oref rega echad e'eleh vekirbecha vechiliticha ve'atah hored edyecha me'aleicha ve'ed'ah mah e'eseh lach.
For HASHEM had said to Moshe, "Say to the children of Yisrael, 'You are a stiff-necked people. I could come up into your midst in one moment and consume you. Now therefore, take off your ornaments, that I may know what to do to you.'"

6 Vayitnatzlu venei-Yisrael et-edyam mehar Chorev.
So the children of Yisrael stripped themselves of their ornaments by Mount Chorev.

Moshe took his tent and pitched it outside the camp, far from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of Meeting. And it came to pass that everyone who sought HASHEM went out to the Tabernacle of meeting which was outside the camp.

8 Vehayah ketzet Moshe el-ha'ohel yakumu kol-ha'am venitzvu ish petach aholo vehibitu acharey Moshe ad-bo'o ha'ohelah.
So it was, whenever Moshe went out to the Tabernacle, that all the people rose, and each man stood at his tent door and watched Moshe until he had gone into the Tabernacle.

9 Vehayah kevo Moshe ha'ohelah yered amud he'anan ve'amad petach ha'ohel vediber im-Moshe.
And it came to pass, when Moshe entered the Tabernacle, that the pillar of cloud descended and stood at the door of the Tabernacle, and He talked with Moshe.

10 Vera'ah chol-ha'am et-amud he'anan omed petach ha'ohel vekam kol-ha'am vehishtachavu ish petach aholo.
All the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the Tabernacle door, and all the people rose and worshiped, each man in his tent door.

11 Vediber HASHEM el-Moshe panim el-panim ka'asher yedaber ish el-re'ehu veshav el-hamachaneh umesharto Yehoshua ben-Nun na'ar lo yamish mitoch ha'ohel.
So HASHEM spoke to Moshe face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And he would return to the camp, but his servant Yehoshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the Tabernacle.

The Second Tablets

34:1 Vayomer HASHEM el-Moshe psol-lecha shnei-luchot avanim karishonim vechatavti al-haluchot et-hadevarim asher hayu al-haluchot harishonim asher shibarta.
And HASHEM said to Moshe,
"Cut two tablets of stone like the first ones, and I will write on these tablets the words that were on the first tablets which you broke.

2 Veheyeh nachon laboker ve'alita vaboker el-har Sinai venitzavta li sham al-rosh hahar.
So be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself to Me there on the top of the mountain.

4 Vayifsol shnei-luchot avanim karishonim vayashkem Moshe vaboker vaya'al el-har Sinai ka'asher tzivah HASHEM oto vayikach beyado shnei luchot avanim.

5 Vayered HASHEM be'anan vayityatzev imo sham vayikra veshem HASHEM.

And HASHEM passed before him and proclaimed,

8 Vayemaher Moshe vayikod artzah vayishtachu.
So Moshe made haste and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshiped.

9 Vayomer im-na matzati chen be'eineicha HASHEM yelech-na adonai bekirbenu ki am-ksheh-oref hu vesalachta la'avonenu ulchatatenu unchaltanu.
Then he said, "If now I have found grace in Your sight, O HASHEM, let my master, I pray, go among us, even though we are a stiff-necked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us as Your inheritance."

Shevi'i

27 Vayomer HASHEM el-Moshe ktov-lecha et-hadevarim ha'eleh ki al-pi hadevarim ha'eleh karati itcha brit ve'et-Yisrael.
Then HASHEM said to Moshe,

28 Vayehi-sham im-HASHEM arba'im yom ve'arba'im lailah lechem lo achal umayim lo shatah vayichtov al-haluchot et divrei habrit aseret hadevarim.
So he was there with HASHEM forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water. And He wrote on the tablets the words of the Covenant, the Ten Commandments.

The Radiance of Moshe

29 Vayehi beredet Moshe mehar Sinai ushnei luchot ha'edut beyad-Moshe berideto min-hahar uMoshe lo-yada ki karan or panav bedabro ito.
Now it was so, when Moshe came down from Mount Sinai (and the two Tablets of the Testimony were in Moshe' hand when he came down from the mountain), that Moshe did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him.

30 Vayar Aharon vechol-benei Yisrael et-Moshe vehineh karan or panav vayir'u migeshet elav.
So when Aharon and all the children of Yisrael saw Moshe, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him.

31 Vayikra alehem Moshe vayashuvu elav Aharon vechol-hanesi'im ba'edah vayedaber Moshe alehem.
Then Moshe called to them, and Aharon and all the rulers of the congregation returned to him; and Moshe talked with them.

32 Ve'acharey-chen nigshu kol-benei Yisrael vayetzavem et kol-asher diber HASHEM ito behar Sinai.
Afterward all the children of Yisrael came near, and he gave them as commandments all that HASHEM had spoken with him on Mount Sinai.

And whenever the children of Yisrael saw the face of Moshe, that the skin of Moshe' face shone, then Moshe would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with Him.

The Shabbat

35:1 Vayachel Moshe et-kol-adat benei-Yisrael vayomer alehem eleh hadevarim asher-tzivah HASHEM la'asot otam.
Then Moshe gathered all the congregation of the children of Yisrael together, and said to them, "These are the words which HASHEM has commanded you to do:
