A gentile comes to Shammai and says:

"Convert me to Judaism on condition that I don't accept the Oral Torah!"

Shammai of course drives him away with his measuring rod. (Whack! Ouch!)

So the gentile goes to Hillel and says:

"Convert me to Judaism on condition that I don't accept the Oral Torah!"

Hillel says: "Sure. Here's your first lesson:" Hillel pulls out an Alef Beit chart and pointing to the letters says:
"Repeat after me: Alef, Beit, Gimel...etc"

After the gentile has learned the letters Hillel says: "Good job! Come back tomorrow for your next lesson"

Next day, Hillel pulls out the same chart, points to the same letters in the same sequence and says: "Repeat after me: Resh, Vav, Tzadi..."

At this point the gentile jumps up shouting: "Wait a second! Yesterday you tell me that this one is 'Alef', today you tell me it's 'Resh'!?? What gives??"

Hillel says: "AHA! Now you see....it's ALL Oral Torah.  You need to trust me even to know that Alef is Alef, certainly you need to trust me to know that Shabbat = 39 melachot, or that Tefillin are black and not green!"

The gentile accepts the Oral Torah on himself and becomes a Ger Tzedek (Righteous Convert).

Above story proves how real and important the Oral Torah is, and how impossible it is to understand the written Torah without the Oral one.
