6 Vayomer elav ha'Elokim bachalom gam anochi yadati ki vetom-levavcha asita zot ve'echsoch gam-anochi otcha mechato-li al-ken lo-netaticha linego'ah eleiha.
G-d said to him in a dream, "I also know that you did this with an innocent heart. I also prevented you from sinning against Me. That is why I did not give you the chance to touch her.

7 Ve'atah ashev eshet-ha'ish ki-navi hu veyitpalel ba'adecha vecheyeh ve'im-eynecha meshiv da ki-mot tamut atah vechol-asher-lach.
Now return the man's wife, for he is a prophet. He will pray for you and you will live. If you do not return her, you should know that you will surely die - you nd all that is yours."

8 Vayashkem Avimelech baboker vayikra lechol-avadav vayedaber et-kol-hadevarim ha'eleh be'ozneyhem vayir'u ha'anashim me'od.
Avimelech got up early in the morning, and called all his servants. He spoke all these words in their ears, and the men were very frightened.

9 Vayikra Avimelech le-Avraham vayomer lo meh-asita lanu umeh-chatati lach ki-heveta alay ve'al mamlachti chata'ah gedolah ma'asim asher lo-ye'asu asita imadi.
Avimelech called Avraham and said to him, "What have you done to us? What wrong did I do to you that you brought on me and upon my kingdom such a great sin? Deeds that ought not to be done, you have done to me."

10 Vayomer Avimelech el-Avraham mah ra'ita ki asita et-hadavar hazeh.
Avimelech [then] said to Avraham, "What did you see that you did such a thing?"

11 Vayomer Avraham ki amarti rak eyn-yir'at Elokim bamakom hazeh vaharaguni al-devar ishti.
Avraham said, "Because I said [thought] thre is no fear of G-d in this place, and they will kill me [in order] to take my wife.

12 Vegam omnah achoti vat-avi hi ach lo vat-imi vatehi-li le'ishah.
In any case, she is my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife.

13 Vayehi ka'asher hite'u oti Elokim mibeit avi va'omar lah zeh chasdech asher ta'asi imadi el kol-hamakom asher navo shamah imri-li achi hu.
When G-d caused me to wander from my father's house, I said to her, 'this is the kindness you shall do for me. At every place we come to, say of me, 'He is my brother.'"

14 Vayikach Avimelech tzon uvakar va'avadim ushfachot vayiten le-Avraham vayashev lo et Sarah ishto.
Avimelech took sheep, cattle, male and female slaves, and he gave them to Avraham. He [also] returned his wife Sarah to him.

15 Vayomer Avimelech hineh artzi lefaneycha batov be'eyneycha shev.
Avimelech said, "Behold, my land is before you. Live wherever you see fit."

16 Ule-Sarah amar hineh natati elef kesef le'achich hineh hu-lach ksut eynayim lechol asher itach ve'et kol venochachat.
To Sarah, he said, "Behold I have given to your brother a thousand pieces of silver. It will be for you a [compensational] eye covering for all who are with you, that you may face every one."

17 Vayitpalel Avraham el-ha'Elokim vayirpa Elokim et-Avimelech ve'et-ishto ve'amehotav vayeledu.
Avraham prayed to G-d, and G-d healed Avimelech, his wife, and his female slaves, and they gave birth.

18 Ki-atzor atzar HASHEM be'ad kol-rechem leveyt Avimelech al-devar Sarah eshet-Avraham.
For HASHEM had restrained every womb in the house of Avimelech because of Sarah, Avraham's wife.


The Birth of Yitzchak


21:1 Va'HASHEM pakad et-Sarah ka'asher amar vaya'as HASHEM le-Sarah ka'asher diber.
HASHEM remembered Sarah as He had said, and HASHEM did for Sarah as He had spoken.

2 Vatahar vateled Sarah le-Avraham ben lizkunav lamo'ed asher-diber oto Elokim.
She conceived and Sarah gave birth to Avraham's son in his old age, at the designated time that G-d had declared.

3 Vayikra Avraham et-shem-beno hanolad-lo asher-yaldah-lo Sarah Yitzchak.
Avraham named his son that was born to him, to which Sarah had borne to him, Yitzchak.

4 Vayamol Avraham et-Yitzchak beno ben-shmonat yamim ka'asher tzivah oto Elokim.
Avraham circumcised his son, Yitzchak, when he was eight days old, as G-d had commanded him.


Chamishi


5 Ve'Avraham ben-me'at shanah behivaled lo et Yitzchak beno.
Avraham was one hundred years old when his son Yitzchak was born to him.

6 Vatomer Sarah tzechok asah li Elokim kol-hashomea yitzachak-li.
Sarah said, "G-d has given me laughter. All who hear will laugh with me."

7 Vatomer mi milel le-Avraham heynikah vanim Sarah ki-yaladeti ven lizkunav.
She said, "Who would have said to Avraham, that Sarah would nurse children? For I have given birth to a son in his old age."

8 Vayigdal hayeled vayigamal vaya'as Avraham mishteh gadol beyom higamel et-Yitzchak.
The child grew and was weaned. Avraham made a great feast on the day Yitzchak was weaned.


The Expelling of Hagar and Yishmael


9 Vatere Sarah et-ben-Hagar haMitzrit asher-yaldah le-Avraham metzachek.
Sarah saw that the son of Hagar, the Egyptian, that she had born to Avraham, was mocking.

10 Vatomer le-Avraham garesh ha'amah hazot ve'et-benah ki lo yirash ben-ha'amah hazot im-beny im-Yitzchak.
She said to Avraham, "Drive out this slave-woman and her son, for the son of this slave woman will not inherit with my son, with Yitzchak."

11 Vayera hadavar me'od be'eynei Avraham al odot beno.
The thing was very wrong in the eyes of Avraham, on account of his son.

12 Vayomer Elokim el-Avraham al-yera be'eyneicha al-hana'ar ve'al-amatecha kol asher tomar eleycha Sarah shma bekolah ki beYitzchak yikare lecha zara.
G-d said to Avraham, "Do not consider this wrong in your eyes on account of the boy and your slave-woman. Regarding all that Sarah tells you, listen to her, for [only] through Yitzchak will seed be considered yours.

13 Vegam et-ben-ha'amah legoy asimenu ki zar'acha hu.
[But] also the son of the slave-woman I will make into a nation, for he is [of] your seed."

14 Vayashkem Avraham baboker vayikach-lechem vechemat mayim vayiten el-Hagar sam al-shichmah ve'et-hayeled vayeshalcheha vatelech vateta bemidbar Be'er-sheva.
Avraham got up early in the morning, He took bread and a skin [pouch] of water, and gave it to Hagar. He placed it on her shoulder with the lad, and sent her away. She went and lost her way in the desert of Beer-sheva.

15 Vayichlu hamayim min-hachemet vatashlech et-hayeled tachat achad hasichim.
The water in the skin was used up, and she threw the lad under one of the bushes.

16 Vatelech vateshev lah mineged harchek kimetachavey keshet ki amerah al-er'eh bemot hayaled vateshev mineged vatisa et-kolah vatevk.
She went and sat facing him, about [the distance] of a bow-shot away. She said, "Let me not see the lad die." She sat facing him and wept in a loud voice.

17 Vayishma Elokim et-kol hana'ar vayikra mal'ach Elokim el-Hagar min-hashamayim vayomer lah mah-lach Hagar al-tire'i ki-shama Elokim el-kol hana'ar ba'asher hu-sham.
G-d heard the voice of the lad. An angel of G-d called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, "What is the matter, Hagar? Do not fear. G-d has heard the voice of the lad in the place where he is.

18 Kumi se'i et-hana'ar vehachasiki et-yadech bo ki-legoy gadol asimenu.
"Get up and lift up the lad. Keep your hand strong on him, for I will make him a great nation."

19 Vayifkach Elokim et-eyneyha vatere be'er mayim vatelech vatemale et-hachemet mayim vatashk et-hana'ar.
G-d opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. She went and filled the skin with water, and gave the lad to drink.

20 Vayehi Elokim et-hana'ar vayigdal vayeshev bamidbar vayehi roveh kashat.
G-d was with the lad and he grew up. He settled in the wilderness, [where] he became an expert archer.

21 Vayeshev bemidbar Paran vatikach-lo imo ishah me'eretz Mitzrayim.
He lived in the desert of Paran, and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.


Shishi


The alliance with Avimelech at Beer-sheva


22 Vayehi ba'et hahi vayomer Avimelech uFichol sar-tzeva'o el-Avraham lemor Elokim imecha bechol asher-atah oseh.
It was at this time, Avimelech and Pichol, his general spoke to Avraham, saying, "G-d is with you in all that you do.

23 Ve'atah hishave'ah li be'Elokim henah im-tishkor li ulenini ulenechdi kachesed asher-asiti imcha ta'aseh imadi ve'im ha'aretz asher-gartah bah.
Now, swear to me here, by G-d, that you will not deal falsely with me, with my son, or my grandson. The kindness that I have done to you, do to me and to the land in which you lived for a while."

Avraham said, "I will swear."

25 Vehochiach Avraham et-Avimelech al-odot be'er hamayim asher gazlu avdei Avimelech.
Avraham then reprimanded Avimelech regarding the well of water that Avimelech's servants had taken by force.

26 Vayomer Avimelech lo yadati mi asah et-hadavar hazeh vegam-atah lo-higadeta li vegam anochi lo shamati bilti hayom.
Avimelech said, "I do not know who did this thing. You also never told me, and I also heard nothing of it until today."

27 Vayikach Avraham tzon uvakar vayiten la-Avimelech vayikhretu shneyhem brit.
Avraham took sheep and cattle and gave them to Avimelech. The two of them made a covenant.

28 Vayatzev Avraham et-sheva kivsot hatzon levadehen.
Avraham set seven ewes apart by themselves.

29 Vayomer Avimelech el-Avraham mah henah sheva kevasot ha'eleh asher hitzavta levadanah.
Avimelech said to Avraham, "What is the reason for these seven ewes that you have set apart?"

30 Vayomer ki et-sheva kevasot tikach miyadi ba'avur tihyeh li le'edah ki chafarti et-habe'er hazot.
He [Avraham] said, "Take these seven ewes from my hand so that it will be proof for me, that I dug this well."

31 Al-ken kara lamakom hahu Be'er-sheva ki sham nishbe'u shneyhem.
Therefore he called that place Beer-sheva, since the two had made an oath there.

32 Vayichretu verit biVe'er-sheva vayakom Avimelech uFichol sar-tzeva'o vayashuvu el-eretz Pelishtim.
They made a covenant in Be'er-sheva. Avimelech, and Pichol, his general, then rose and returned to the land of the Pelishtim.

33 Vayita eshel biVe'er-sheva vayikra-sham beshem HASHEM Kel Olam.
Avraham planted an eishel [tree] in Beer-sheva, and there he proclaimed the Name HASHEM, G-d of the universe.

34 Vayagar Avraham be'eretz Pelishtim yamim rabim.
Avraham lived in the land of the Pelishtim for many days.

The Akeidah


22:1 Vayehi achar hadevarim ha'eleh veha'Elokim nisa et-Avraham vayomer elav Avraham vayomer hineni.
After these events, G-d tested Avraham and said to him, "Avraham! And he [Avraham] said, "Here I am."

2 Vayomer kach-na et-bincha et-yechidecha asher-ahavta et-Yitzchak velech-lecha el-eretz haMoriyah veha'alehu sham le'olah al achad heharim asher omar eleicha.
He said, "Please take your son, your only one, who you love - Yitzchak - and go to the land of Moriyah. Sacrifice him as a burnt-offering on one of the mountains which I will designate to you."

3 Vayashkem Avraham baboker vayachavosh et-chamoro vayikach et-shnei ne'arav ito ve'et Yitzchak beno vayevaka atzei olah vayakom vayelech el-hamakom asher-amar-lo ha'Elokim.
Avraham awoke early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took his two attendants with him, and also his son, Yitzchak. He split the wood of the burnt-offering, rose, and went to the place that G-d had designated to him.

4 Bayom hashlishi vayisa Avraham et-eynav vayar et-hamakom merachok.
On the third day, Avraham raised his eyes and saw the place from afar.

5 Vayomer Avraham el-ne'arav shvu-lachem poh im-hachamor va'ani vehana'ar nelchah ad-koh venishtachaveh venashuvah aleichem.
Avraham said to his attendants, "Remain here with the donkey and I and the lad will go to that place. We will prostrate ourselves [in worship] and return to you."

6 Vayikach Avraham et-atzey ha'olah vayashem al-Yitzchak beno vayikach beyado et-ha'esh ve'et-hama'achelet vayelchu shneyhem yachdav.
Avraham took the wood of the burnt-offering and placed it on his son Yitzchak. In his hand he took the fire and the knife, and they both went together.

7 Vayomer Yitzchak el-Avraham aviv vayomer avi vayomer hineni veni vayomer hineh ha'esh veha'etzim ve'ayeh haseh le'olah.
Yitzchak spoke to Avraham, his father, and said, "Father." And he [Avraham] said, "Here I am, my son." He said, "Here are the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt-offering?"

8 Vayomer Avraham Elokim yir'eh-lo haseh le'olah beni vayelchu shneihem yachdav.
Avraham said, "G-d will show the lamb for a burnt-offering, my son." And the two of them went together.

9 Vayavo'u el-hamakom asher amar-lo ha'Elokim vayiven sham Avraham et-hamizbeach vaya'aroch et-ha'etzim vaya'akod et-Yitzchak beno vayasem oto al-hamizbeach mima'al la'etzim.
They came to the place that G-d had designated to him. Avraham built the altar there, and arranged the wood.

10 Vayishlach Avraham et-yado vayikach et-hama'achelet lishchot et-beno.
Avraham extended his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.

11 Vayikra elav mal'ach HASHEM min-hashamayim vayomer Avraham Avraham vayomer hineni.
An angel of HASHEM called to him from heaven and said, "Avraham, Avraham!" And he said, "Here I am."

12 Vayomer al-tishlach yadcha el-hana'ar ve'al-ta'as lo me'umah ki atah yadati ki-yere Elokim atah velo chasachta et-bincha et-yechidecha mimeni.
He [G-d] said, "Do not touch the lad, nor do anything to [harm] him; for now I know that you are one who fears G-d and have not withheld your son, your only one, from Me."

13 Vayisa Avraham et-eynav vayar vehineh-ayil achar ne'echaz basvach bekarnav vayelech Avraham vayikach et-ha'ayil vaya'alehu le'olah tachat beno.
Avraham looked up and beheld a ram after it had been caught in the thicket by its horns. Avraham went and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt-offering instead of his son.

14 Vayikra Avraham shem-hamakom hahu HASHEM Yir'eh asher ye'amer hayom behar HASHEM yera'eh.
Avraham called the name of that place, "HASHEM will see"; as it is said [to] this day, "On HASHEM'S mountain, He will be seen."

15 Vayikra mal'ach HASHEM el-Avraham shenit min-hashamayim.
An angel of HASHEM called to Avraham, as a second time, from heaven.

16 Vayomer bi nishbati ne'um-HASHEM ki ya'an asher asita et-hadavar hazeh velo chasachta et-bincha et-yechidecha.
And said, "'I have sworn by Myself,' declares HASHEM , 'that because you performed this deed, and did not withhold your only son,

17 Ki-varech avarechecha veharbah arbeh et-zar'acha kechochevey hashamayim vehachol asher al-sfat hayam veyirash zar'acha et sha'ar oyvav.
I will greatly bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars of the sky and like the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will inherit the gate of their enemies.

18 Vehitbarchu bezar'acha kol goyey ha'aretz ekev asher shamata bekoli.
Through your children, will be blessed all the nations of the world, because you heeded My voice."

19 Vayashov Avraham el-ne'arav vayakumu vayelchu yachdav el-Be'er-sheva vayeshev Avraham biVe'er-sheva.
Avraham returned to his attendants, and they rose and went together to Beer-sheva. Avraham dwelt in Beer-sheva.

The Birth of Rivkah


20 Vayehi acharei hadevarim ha'eleh vayugad le-Avraham lemor hineh yaldah Milkah gam-hi banim le-Nachor achicha.
After these events, it was told to Avraham, saying, "Behold, Milkah has also born children to Nachor, your brother."

21 Et-Utz bechoro ve'et-Buz achiv ve'et-Kemu'el avi Aram.
Utz, his first born, Buz his brother, and Kemuel, the father of Aram.

22 Ve'et-Kesed ve'et-Chazo ve'et-Pildash ve'et-Yidlaf ve'et Betu'el.
[Also] Kesed, Chazo, Pildash, Yidlaf and Betuel.

23 UVetu'el yalad et-Rivkah shmonah eleh yaldah Milkah le-Nachor achi Avraham.
Betuel fathered Rivkah. These eight, Milkah bore to Nachor, the brother of Avraham.

24 Ufilagsho ushmah Re'umah vateled gam-hi et-Tevach ve'et-Gacham ve'et-Tachash ve'et-Ma'achah.
His concubine was named Reumah. She also gave birth to Tevach, Gacham, Tachash and Maachah.

Sarah's Death


23:1 Vayihyu chayei Sarah me'ah shanah ve'esrim shanah vesheva shanim shney chayei Sarah.
The lifetime of Sarah consisted of one hundred years, twenty years and seven years. [These were] the years of Sarah's life.

2 Vatamot Sarah beKiryat-arba hi Chevron be'eretz Kena'an vayavo Avraham lispod le-Sarah velivekotah.
Sarah died in Kiryat-arba, which is Chevron, in the land of Kenaan. Avraham came to eulogize Sarah and to weep for her.

3 Vayakom Avraham me'al penei meto vayedaber el-bnei-Chet lemor.
Avraham rose from the presence of his dead, and spoke to the sons of Chet saying,

4 Ger-vetoshav anochi imachem tenu li achuzat-kever imachem ve'ekberah meti milefanai.
"I am a foreigner and a resident among you. Grant me the possession of a grave site with you, so that I may bury my dead from my presence."

5 Vaya'anu venei-Chet et-Avraham lemor lo.
The sons of Chet replied to Avraham saying to him,

6 Shma'enu adoni nesi Elokim atah betochenu bemivechar kevareynu kevor et-metecha ish mimenu et-kivero lo-yichleh mimecha mikevor metcha.
"Hear us my master, you are a prince of G-d in our midst. Bury your dead in the choicest of our grave sites. No man among us will deny his grave site from you to bury your dead."

7 Vayakom Avraham vayishtachu le'am-ha'aretz livnei-Chet.
Avraham rose and bowed to the people of the land, the sons of Chet.

8 Vayedaber itam lemor im-yesh et-nafshechem likbor et-meti milfanai shma'uni ufig'u-li be'Efron ben-Tzochar.
Avraham spoke to them, saying, "If it is really your will that I bury my dead from my presence, listen to me and intercede for me with Efron, son of Tzochar.

9 Veyiten-li et-me'arat haMachpelah asher-lo asher biktzeh sadehu bechesef male yitnenah li betochechem la'achuzat kaver.
Let him give me the Machpelah [double] cave, which belongs to him, which is at the end of his field. Let him give [sell] it to me for its full value, as a grave site among you."

10 Ve'Efron yoshev betoch benei-Chet vaya'an Efron haChiti et-Avraham be'oznei venei-Chet lechol ba'ei sha'ar-iro lemor.
Efron lived in the midst of the sons of Chet, Efron the Chiti replied to Avraham in the ears [audience] of the sons of Chet, for all who came to the city gate, saying,

11 Lo-adoni shma'eni hasadeh natati lach vehame'arah asher-bo lecha netatiha le'eynei venei ami netatiha lach kvor metecha.
"No, my master, hear me: I have given you the field, and the cave that is in it, I have [also] given to you. Before the eyes of the sons of my people I have given it to you. Bury your dead."

12 Vayishtachu Avraham lifnei am-ha'aretz.
Avraham bowed to the people of the land.

13 Vayedaber el-Efron be'oznei am-ha'aretz lemor ach im-atah lu shma'eni natati kesef hasadeh kach mimeni ve'ekberah et-meti shamah.
He spoke to Efron in the ears [audience] of the people of the land saying, "If you will only listen to me. I have given the money for the field. Take it from me and I will bury my dead there."

14 Vaya'an Efron et-Avraham lemor lo.
Efron replied to Avraham, saying to him,

15 Adoni shma'eni eretz arba me'ot shekel-kesef beyni uveyneycha mah-hi ve'et-metecha kevor.
"My Master, hear me. A land [worth] four hundred silver shekel - what is that between me and you? Bury your dead."

16 Vayishma Avraham el-Efron vayishkol Avraham le-Efron et-hakesef asher diber be'oznei venei-Chet arba me'ot shekel kesef over lasocher.
Avraham listened to Efron, and Avraham weighed-out for Efron the silver that he spoke of in the hearing of the sons of Chet, four hundred silver shekel, negotiable currency.


Sheni


17 Vayakom sedeh Efron asher baMachpelah asher lifnei Mamre hasadeh vehame'arah asher-bo vechol-ha'etz asher basadeh asher bechol-gevulo saviv.
The field of Efron was established [as Avraham's possession], [the field] which was in Machpelah, facing Mamre; [this included] the field, the cave that was in it, and all the trees that were in the field that were in the entire circumference of its boundaries.

18 Le-Avraham lemiknah le'eynei venei-Chet bechol ba'ei sha'ar iro.
This became Avraham's [possession] through a purchase before the eyes of the sons of Chet, all who had come to the gate of his city.

19 Ve'acharei-chen kavar Avraham et-Sarah ishto el-me'arat sedeh haMachpelah al-penei Mamre hi Chevron be'eretz Kena'an.
After that Avraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave of the Machpelah field, which faces Mamre, which is Chevron, in the land of Kenaan.

20 Vayakom hasadeh vehame'arah asher-bo le-Avraham la'achuzat-kaver me'et benei-Chet.
The field and its cave was established as Avraham's possession as a gravesite, by the sons of Chet.


Finding A Wife For Yitzchak


24:1 Ve'Avraham zaken ba bayamim va'HASHEM berach et-Avraham bakol.
Avraham was old, advanced in days [years], and HASHEM had blessed Avraham in all things.

2 Vayomer Avraham el-avdo zekan beyto hamoshel bechol-asher-lo sim-na yadeycha tachat yerechi.
Avraham said to his servant, the senior [servant] of his household, who was in charge of all that he owned, "Place your hand under my thigh.

3 Ve'ashbiacha ba'HASHEM Elokei hashamayim ve'Elokei ha'aretz asher lo-tikach isha livni mibenot haKena'ani asher anochi yoshev bekirbo.
I will have you swear by HASHEM, G-d of heaven and G-d of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Kenaani, among whom I live.

4 Ki el-artzi ve'el-moladeti telech velakachta ishah liveni le-Yitzchak.
Instead, to my [native] land, to my birthplace, shall you go, and take a wife for my son, for Yitzchak."

5 Vayomer elav ha'eved ulai lo-toveh ha'ishah lalechet acharai el-ha'aretz hazot hehashev ashiv et-bincha el-ha'aretz asher-yatzata misham.
The servant said to him, "perhaps the woman will not want to come back with me to this land? Shall I bring your son back to the land from where you came?"

6 Vayomer elav Avraham hishamer lecha pen-tashiv et-beni shamah.
Avraham said to him, "Take care, not to bring my son back there.

7 HASHEM Elokei hashamayim asher lekachani mibeit avi ume'eretz moladeti va'asher diber-li va'asher nishba-li lemor lezar'acha eten et-ha'aretz hazot hu yishlach mal'acho lefaneycha velakachta ishah liveni misham.
HASHEM, G-d of heaven, Who took me from my father's house, and from the land of my birth, Who spoke to me, and Who swore to me, saying, 'To your descendants I will give this land' - He will send His angel before you and you shall take a wife for my son from there.

8 Ve-im lo toveh ha'ishah lalechet achareicha venikita mishvuati zot rak et-beni lo tashev shamah.
If the woman does not want to come back with you, you are absolved from this oath to me. But do not bring my son back there."

9 Vayasem ha'eved et-yado tachat yerech Avraham adonav vayishava lo al-hadavar hazeh.
The servant placed his hand under the thigh of Avraham, his master, and swore to him regarding this matter.





1
