Bereishit 29:6-31:37

6 Vayomer lahem hashalom lo vayomeru shalom vehineh Rachel bito ba'ah im-hatzon.
He said to them, "Is he doing well?" They said, "He is doing well. Behold, Rachel, his daughter, is coming with the sheep."

7 Vayomer hen od hayom gadol lo-et he'asef hamikneh hashku hatzon ulechu re'u.
He said to them, "The day is yet long, it is not yet time for the sheep to be gathered, water the sheep and go pasture them."

8 Vayomeru lo nuchal ad asher ye'asfu kol-ha'adarim vegalelu et-ha'even me'al pi habe'er vehishkinu hatzon.
They said, "We cannot [do so] until all the flocks have gathered and [the shepherds] roll the stone from the mouth of the well. Then we can water the sheep."

9 Odenu medaber imam veRachel ba'ah im-hatzon asher le'aviha ki ro'ah hi.
While he was still speaking with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep, for she was a shepherdess.

10 Vayehi ka'asher ra'ah Ya'akov et-Rachel bat-Lavan achi imo ve'et tzon Lavan achi imo vayigash Ya'akov vayagel et-ha'even me'al pi habe'er vayashk et-tzon Lavan achi imo.
When Yaakov saw Rachel, the daughter of Lavan, his mother's brother, with the sheep of Lavan, his mother's brother, he stepped near and rolled the stone from the mouth of the well. He then watered the sheep of Lavan, his mother's brother.

11 Vayishak Ya'akov le-Rachel vayisa et-kolo vayevk.
Yaakov kissed Rachel and cried in a loud voice.

12 Vayaged Ya'akov le-Rachel ki achi aviha hu vechi ven-Rivkah hu vatarotz vataged le'aviha.
Yaakov told Rachel that he was a relative of her father, that he was the son of Rivkah. She ran and told her father.

13 Vayehi chishmoa Lavan et-shema Ya'akov ben-achoto vayarotz likrato vayechabek-lo vayenashek-lo vayevi'ehu el-beyto vayesaper le-Lavan et kol-hadevarim ha'eleh.
When Lavan heard the news of Yaakov, his sister's son, he ran to greet him. He embraced him and kissed him, and brought him to his house. [Yaakov] told Lavan all that had happened.

14 Vayomer lo Lavan ach atzmi uvesari atah vayeshev imo chodesh yamim.
Lavan said to him, "Nevertheless, you are my bone and flesh." [Yaakov] lived with him for a month.


Yaakov is Deceived


15 Vayomer Lavan le-Ya'akov hachi-achi atah va'avadetani chinam hagidah li mah-maskurtecha.
Lavan said to Yaakov, "Just because you are my relative, must you work for me without pay? Tell me, [what should] your wages [be]?"

16 Ule-Lavan shtei vanot shem hagdolah Leah veshem haktanah Rachel.
Lavan had two daughters. The name of the older one was Leah, and the name of the younger one was Rachel.

17 Ve'eynei Leah rakot veRachel hayetah yefat-to'ar vifat mar'eh.
The eyes of Leah were tender. Rachel was of beautiful form and of beautiful appearance.


Shlishi


18 Vaye'ehav Ya'akov et-Rachel vayomer e'evadcha sheva shanim beRachel bitcha haktanah.
Yaakov loved Rachel, and he said, "I will work for you seven years for Rachel, your younger daughter."

19 Vayomer Lavan tov titi otah lach mititi otah le'ish acher shvah imadi.
Lavan said, "Better that I give her to you than I should give her to another man. [Remain] living with me."

20 Vaya'avod Ya'akov beRachel sheva shanim vayihyu ve'eynav keyamim achadim be'ahavato otah.
Yaakov worked seven years for Rachel, but they seemed to him like a few days, so much did he love her.

21 Vayomer Ya'akov el-Lavan havah et-ishti ki male'u yamay ve'avo'ah eleyha.
Yaakov said to Lavan, "Give me my wife, for my term is completed; and thus I will consummate the marriage with her."

22 Vaye'esof Lavan et-kol-anshei hamakom vaya'as mishteh.
Lavan gathered all the local people and he made a [wedding] feast.

23 Vayehi va'erev vayikach et-Leah vito vayave otah elav vayavo eleyha.
When it was evening, he took Leah, his daughter, and brought her to him [Yaakov]. He consummated the marriage with her.

24 Vayiten Lavan lah et-Zilpah shifchato le-Leah vito shifchah.
Lavan gave Zilpah, his servant to her, to Leah, his daughter as a handmaid.

25 Vayehi vaboker vehineh-hi Leah vayomer el-Lavan mah-zot asitah li halo veRachel avadeti imach velamah rimitani.
When it was morning, behold it was Leah! He [Yaakov] said to Lavan, "What have you done to me? Did not I work with you for Rachel? Why did you deceive me?"

26 Vayomer Lavan lo-ye'aseh chen bimkomenu latet hatze'irah lifnei habechirah.
Lavan said, "It is not done so in our place, to give the younger [daughter in marriage] before the firstborn.

27 Male shevua zot venitnah lecha gam-et-zot ba'avodah asher ta'avod imadi od sheva-shanim acherot.
Complete the [marriage] week for this one. We will then give you the other also - in return for the work that you will do with me for another seven years."

28 Vaya'as Ya'akov ken vayemale shvua zot vayiten-lo et-Rachel bito lo le'ishah.
Yaakov did so, and he completed the [marriage] week for this one [Leah]. He [Lavan] then gave Rachel, his daughter to him as a wife.

29 Vayiten Lavan le-Rachel bito et-Bilhah shifchato lah leshifchah.
To his daughter, Rachel, Lavan gave his servant Bilhah, to be her handmaid.

30 Vayavo gam el-Rachel vaye'ehav gam-et-Rachel miLeah vaya'avod imo od sheva-shanim acherot.
He [Yaakov] also consummated his marriage with Rachel. He loved Rachel more than Leah, and he worked with [Lavan] another seven years.


Leah Bears Four Sons


31 Vayar HASHEM ki-snu'ah Leah vayiftach et-rachmah veRachel akarah.
HASHEM saw that Leah was the hated one, and He opened her womb. Rachel remained barren.

32 Vatahar Leah vateled ben vatikra shmo Re'uven ki amrah ki-ra'ah HASHEM be'oni ki atah ye'ehavani ishi.
Leah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuven, as she said, "HASHEM has seen my affliction; for now my husband will love me."

33 Vatahar od vateled ben vatomer ki-shama HASHEM ki-snu'ah anochi vayiten-li gam-et-zeh vatikra shmo Shim'on.
She conceived again and gave birth to a son. She said, "Since HASHEM heard that I am the hated one, He also gave me this one," and she named him Shimon.

34 Vatahar od vateled ben vatomer atah hapa'am yilave ishi elay ki-yaladeti lo shloshah vanim al-ken kara-shmo Levi.
She conceived again and gave birth to a son. She said, "This time my husband will become attached to me, for I have born him three sons." He therefore named him Levi.

35 Vatahar od vateled ben vatomer hapa'am odeh et-HASHEM al-ken kar'ah shmo Yehudah vata'amod miledet.
She conceived again and gave birth to a son. She said, "This time I will praise HASHEM." She therefore named him Yehudah. She then stopped giving birth.


Rachel is fulfilled through Bilhah


30:1 Vatere Rachel ki lo yaledah le-Ya'akov vatekane Rachel ba'achotah vatomer el-Ya'akov havah-li vanim ve'im-ayin metah anochi.
Rachel saw that she was not bearing children to Yaakov. Rachel became jealous of her sister, and she said to Yaakov, "Give me children; if not I am [considered] dead."

2 Vayichar-af Ya'akov beRachel vayomer hatachat Elokim anochi asher-mana mimech pri-vaten.
Yaakov became very angry with Rachel, and he said, "Am I in G-d's place? [It is He] who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb."

3 Vatomer hineh amati Vilhah bo eleyha veteled al-birkay ve'ibaneh gam-anochi mimenah.
She said, "here is my handmaid, Bilhah, consummate a marriage with her. Let her give birth upon my knees, and I too will have a son through her."

4 Vatiten-lo et-Bilhah shifchatah le'ishah vayavo eleyha Ya'akov.
She gave him Bilhah, her handmaid, as a wife and Yaakov consummated the marriage with her.

5 Vatahar Bilhah vateled le-Ya'akov ben.
Bilhah conceived and bore Yaakov a son.

6 Vatomer Rachel danani Elokim vegam shama bekoli vayiten-li ben al-ken kar'ah shmo Dan.
Rachel said, "G-d has judged me. He has also heard my voice, and has given me son." She therefore named him Dan.

7 Vatahar od vateled Bilhah shifchat Rachel ben sheni le-Ya'akov.
She conceived again, and Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid, bore a second son to Yaakov.

8 Vatomer Rachel naftulei elohim niftalti im-achoti gam-yacholti vatikra shmo Naftali.
Rachel said, "With G-d's bonds, I have been joined to my sister, and I have also prevailed." She [therefore] called him Naftali.

9 Vatere Leah ki amedah miledet vatikach et-Zilpah shifchata vatiten otah le-Ya'akov le'ishah.
Leah realized that she was no longer bearing children. She [therefore] took Zilpah, her handmaid, and gave her to Yaakov as a wife.

10 Vateled Zilpah shifkhat Leah le-Ya'akov ben.
Zilpah, Leah's handmaid, bore Yaakov a son.

11 Vatomer Leah ba gad vatikra et-shmo Gad.
Leah said, "Unexpected success has come," and she named him Gad.

12 Vateled Zilpah shifchat Leah ben sheni le-Ya'akov.
Zilpah, Leah's handmaid bore a second son to Yaakov.

13 Vatomer Leah be'oshri ki ishruni banot vatikra et-shmo Asher.
Leah said, "It is in my good fortune that daughters [women] will consider me fortunate." She named him Asher.


Revi'i


14 Vayelech Re'uven bimei ktzir-chitim vayimtza duda'im basadeh vayave otam el-Leah imo vatomer Rachel el-Leah tni-na li miduda'ei benech.
Reuven went in the days of the wheat harvest, and found jasmine flowers in the field. He brought them to Leah, his mother. Rachel said to Leah, "Please give me some of your son's jasmine flowers."

15 Vatomer lah hame'at kachtech et-ishi velakachat gam et-duda'ei beni vatomer Rachel lachen yishkav imach halailah tachat duda'ey venech.
She [Leah] said to her, " Isn't it enough that you took my husband? Would you also take my son's jasmine flowers?" Rachel said, "Therefore, he shall be with you tonight in exchange for your son's jasmine flowers."

16 Vayavo Ya'akov min-hasadeh ba'erev vatetze Leah likrato vatomer elay tavo ki sachor secharticha beduda'ei beni vayishkav imah balailah hu.
Yaakov came from the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him. She said, "You will come to me, for I have hired you with my son's jasmine flowers," and he was with her that night.

17 Vayishma Elokim el-Leah vatahar vateled le-Ya'akov ben-chamishi.
G-d perceived Leah's [wish]. She conceived and bore [her] fifth son to Yaakov.

18 Vatomer Leah natan Elokim sechari asher-natati shifchati le'ishi vatikra shmo Yissachar.
Leah said, "G-d has given me my reward because I gave my handmaid to my husband." She named him Yissachar.

19 Vatahar od Leah vateled ben shishi le-Ya'akov.
leah conceived again and bore [her] sixth son to Yaakov.

20 Vatomer Leah zvadani Elokim oti zeved tov hapa'am yizbeleni ishi ki-yaladeti lo shishah vanim vatikra et-shmo Z'vulun.
Leah said, "G-d has given a goodly portion. Now my husband will make his [main] home with me, for I have borne him six sons. She named him Zevulun.

21 Ve'achar yaldah bat vatikra et-shmah Dinah.
Afterwards she gave birth to a daughter, and named her Dinah.


The birth of Yosef


22 Vayizkor Elokim et-Rachel vayishma eleyha Elokim vayiftach et-rachmah.
G-d remembered Rachel, and G-d perceived her [plight] and opened her womb.

23 Vatahar vateled ben vatomer asaf Elokim et-cherpati.
She conceived and gave birth to a son. She said, "G-d has removed my shame."

24 Vatikra et-shemo Yosef lemor yosef HASHEM li ben acher.
She named him Yosef, saying, "May HASHEM add to me another son."

25 Vayehi ka'asher yaldah Rachel et-Yosef vayomer Ya'akov el-Lavan shalcheni ve'elchah el-mekomi ule'artzi.
When Rachel had given birth to Yosef, Yaakov said to Lavan, "Send me on my way, and I will go to my own place and to my homeland.

26 Tenah et-nashay ve'et-yeladay asher avadeti otecha bahen ve'elechah ki atah yadata et-avodati asher avadeticha.
Give me [permission to take] my wives and my children, for whom I worked for you, and I wll go; for you know my work that I did for you."

27 Vayomer elav Lavan im-na matzati chen be'eyneycha nichashti vayevarcheni HASHEM biglalecha.
lavan said to him, "If I have found favor in your eyes, I have divined that HASHEM has blessed me because of you."


Chamishi


28 Vayomar nakvah secharecha alay ve'etenah.
He said, "Set your wage for me, and I will give it."

29 Vayomer elav atah yadata et asher avadeticha ve'et asher-hayah miknecha iti.
He [Yaakov] said to him, "You know how I worked for you, and how your livestock fared with me.

30 Ki me'at asher-hayah lecha lefanay vayifrotz larov vayevarech HASHEM otcha leragli ve'atah matay e'eseh gam-anochi leveyti.
For the little you had before I came here has increased and has become a multitude. HASHEM has blessed you with my coming. Now when will I also do something for my own house?"

31 Vayomer mah eten-lach vayomer Ya'akov lo-titen-li me'umah im-ta'aseh-li hadavar hazeh ashuvah er'eh tzonkha eshmor.
He [Lavan] said, "What shall I give you?" Yaakov said, "Do not give me anything - if you do this thing for me, I will continue to tend your flock and guard it.

32 E'evor bechol-tzoncha hayom haser misham kol-seh nakod vetalu vechol-seh-chum baksavim vetalu venakod ba'izim vahayah sechari.
I will go through all your flock and guard it. I will remove from them every lamb that is speckled, or spotted, and every dark one among the sheep, and every goat that is spotted and speckled. That [kind] will be my wage.

33 Ve'antah-bi tzidkati beyom machar ki-tavo al-schari lefaneycha kol asher-eyneynu nakod vetalu ba'izim vechum baksavim ganuv hu iti.
My righteousness shall testify for me in the future when you go over my wage. Any goat which is not speckled or spotted, and any sheep that is [not] dark, shall be considered as stolen [if it is] in my possession."

34 Vayomer Lavan hen lu yehi chidvarecha.
Lavan said, "Agreed, may it be as you say."

35 Vayasar bayom hahu et-hateyashim ha'akudim vehatlu'im ve'et kol-ha'izim hanekudot vehatlu'ot kol-asher-Lavan bo vechol-chum baksavim vayiten beyad-banav.
That day he [Lavan] removed the he-goats that were ringed and spotted, and all the she-goats that were speckled and spotted, everyone that had white in it, and all the dark ones among the sheep; nd he gave them to his sons.

36 Vayasem derech shloshet yamim beyno uveyn Ya'akov veYa'akov ro'eh et-tzon Lavan hanotarot.
He placed a three days journey between himself and Yaakov. Yaakov tended Lavan's remaining flocks.

37 Vayikach-lo Ya'akov makal livneh lach veluz ve'armon vayefatzel bahen petzalot levanot machsof halavan asher al-hamaklot.
Yaakov took rods of fresh poplar, hazel and chestnut [trees], and peeled white stripes in them by uncovering the white which is in the rods.

38 Vayatzeg et-hamaklot asher pitzel barehatim beshikatot hamayim asher tavona hatzon lishtot lenochach hatzon vayechamnah bevo'an lishtot.
He set up the rods that he had peeled in the ducts in the watering troughs, where the sheep [ewes] came to drink facing the sheep [rams]; that they should become heated when they came to drink.

39 Vayechemu hatzon el-hamaklot vateladnah hatzon akudim nekudim utlu'im.
The sheep became heated [and mated] before the rods, and the sheep gave birth to ringed, speckled and spotted [lambs].

40 Vehaksavim hifrid Ya'akov vayiten penei hatzon el-akod vechol-chum betzon Lavan vayashet lo adarim levado velo shatam al-tzon Lavan.
Yaakov separated the lambs. He set the faces of the sheep toward the ringed ones and all the dark ones; [he did so] with Lavan's flocks. He formed separate flocks of his own, and did not set them with Lavan's flocks.

41 Vehayah bechol-yachem hatzon hamekusharot vesam Ya'akov et-hamaklot le'eynei hatzon barehatim leyachmenah bamaklot.
When the stronger sheep were heated [to mate], Yaakov placed the rods before the sheep's eyes at the ducts, so they would be in heat among the rods.

42 Uveha'atif hatzon lo yasim vehayah ha'atufim le-Lavan vehakshurim le-Ya'akov.
But when the sheep were feeble, he did not place [the rods before them]. Thus the feeble ones were Lavan's, and the strong ones became the possession of Yaakov.

43 Vayifrotz ha'ish me'od me'od vayehi-lo tzon rabot ushfachot va'avadim ugmalim vachamorim.
The man became tremendously prosperous. He had many flocks, female slaves and male slaves, camels and donkeys.


Yaakov Flees from Lavan


31:1 Vayishma et-divrei vney-Lavan lemor lakach Ya'akov et kol-asher le'avinu ume'asher le'avinu asah et kol-hakavod hazeh.
He [Yaakov] heard the words of Lavan's sons [who were] saying, "Yaakov has taken all that belonged to our father. From that which was our father's, he made all this wealth."

2 Vayar Ya'akov et-penei Lavan vehineh einenu imo kitmol shilshom.
Yaakov saw Lavan's face [demeanor] and it was not toward him as it was before.

3 Vayomer HASHEM el-Ya'akov shuv el-eretz avoteycha ulemoladetecha ve'ehyeh imach.
HASHEM said to Yaakov, "Return to the land of your fathers and to your birthplace, and I will be with you."

4 Vayishlach Ya'akov vayikra le-Rachel ule-Leah hasadeh el-tzono.
Yaakov sent and called Rachel and Leah to [come to] the field, to his flock.

5 Vayomer lahen ro'eh anochi et-pnei avikhen ki-eynenu elay kitmol shilshom v'Elokei avi hayah imadi.
He said to them, "I saw your father's face; it is not toward me as it was before, but the G-d of my father was with me.

6 Ve'atenah yedaten ki bechol-kochi avadeti et-avichen.
You know that I served your father with all my strength.

7 Va'avichen hetel bi vehechelif et-maskurti aseret monim velo-netano Elokim lehara imadi.
Your father cheated me and changed my wage ten times; but G-d did not let him harm me.

8 Im-ko yomar nekudim yihyeh secharecha veyaldu chol-hatzon nekudim ve'im-ko yomar akudim yihyeh secharecha veyaldu chol-hatzon akudim.
If he would say, 'The speckled will be your wage,' then all the sheep gave birth to speckled ones. If he would say, 'Ringed ones will be your wage,' then all the sheep gave birth to rigned ones.

9 Vayatzel Elokim et-mikneh avichem vayiten-li.
Thus G-d delivered your father's livestock, and gave it to me.

10 Vayehi be'et yachem hatzon va'esa eynay va'ere bachalom vehineh ha'atudim ha'olim al-hatzon akudim nekudim uverudim.
At the time the sheep were in heat [to mate], I lifted my eyes, and in a dream I saw that the rams going upon the sheep were ringed, speckled and striped.

11 Vayomer elay mal'ach ha'Elokim bachalom Ya'akov va'omar hineni.
An angel of G-d said to me in a dream, 'Yaakov,' and I said, 'Here I am.'

12 Vayomer sa-na eyneycha ur'eh kol-ha'atudim ha'olim al-hatzon akudim nekudim uverudim ki ra'iti et kol-asher Lavan oseh lach.
He said, 'Lift up your eyes and see, all the rams going up on the sheep are ringed, speckled, and striped; for I have seen all that lavan is doing to you.

13 Anochi ha'Kel Beit-el asher mashachta sham matzevah asher nadarta li sham neder atah kum tze min-ha'aretz hazot veshuv el-eretz moladetecha.
I am the Almighty of Beit-el, where you anointed a monument, where you made a vow to Me. Now arise and leave this land, and return to th eland of your birthplace.'"

14 Vata'an Rachel veLeah vatomarnah lo ha'od lanu chelek venachalah beveyt avinu.
Rachel and Leah replied and said to him, "Do we still have a portion and an inheritance in our father's house?

15 Halo nochri'ot nechshavnu lo ki mecharanu vayochal gam-achol et-kaspenu.
Are we not considered by him as strangers? For he has sold us, and has completely consumed our money.

16 Ki chol-ha'osher asher hitzil Elokim me'avinu lanu hu ulevaneynu ve'atah kol asher amar Elokim eleycha aseh.
All the wealth that G-d rescued from our father belongs to us and our children. Now, whatever G-d has said to you, do it."


Shishi


17 Vayakom Ya'akov vayisa et-banav ve'et-nashav al-hagemalim.
Yaakov rose and lifted his children and his wives upon the camels.

18 Vayinhag et-kol-miknehu ve'et-kol-rechusho asher rachash mikneh kinyano asher rachash beFadan-aram lavo el-Yitzchak aviv artzah Kena'an.
He led away all his livestock, and all his possessions that he had acquired, which he had purchased with his own livestock that he had acquired in Padan-aram, [in order] to come to Yitzchak, his father, to the land of Kenaan.

19 VeLavan halach ligzoz et-tzono vatignov Rachel et-hatrafim asher le'aviha.
Lavan [meanwhile] had gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel stole the idols that belonged to her father.

20 Vayignov Ya'akov et-lev Lavan ha'Arammi al-beli higid lo ki voreach hu.
Yaakov fooled Lavan, the Arami, by not telling him that he had fled.

21 Vayivrach hu vechol-asher-lo vayakom vaya'avod et-hanahar vayasem et-panav har haGil'ad.
He fled with all that he possessed. He set out and crossed the river, setting out in the direction of Mount Gilad.


Lavan Pursues Yaakov


22 Vayugad le-Lavan bayom hashlishi ki varach Ya'akov.
Lavan was told on the third day that Yaakov had fled.

23 Vayikach et-echav imo vayirdof acharav derech shiv'at yamim vayadbek oto behar haGil'ad.
He took his brothers [kinsmen] with him, and pursued him a distance of seven days. He overtook him in Mount Gilad.

24 Vayavo Elokim el-Lavan ha'Arammi bachalom halailah vayomer lo hishamer lecha pen-tedaber im-Ya'akov mitov ad-ra.
G-d appeared to Lavan the Arami, in a dream that night, and said to him, "Guard yourself, that you do not speak to Yaakov either good and evil."

25 Vayaseg Lavan et-Ya'akov veYa'akov taka et-aholo bahar veLavan taka et-echav beHar haGil'ad.
Lavan overtook Yaakov. Yaakov had set up his tents on the mountain, and Lavan and his brothers had set up on Mount Gilad.

26 Vayomer Lavan le-Ya'akov meh asita vatignov et-levavi vatenaheg et-benotay kishvuyot charev.
Lavan said to Yaakov, "What have you done? You fooled me, and led my daughters away like prisoners of war.

27 Lamah nachbeta livroach vatignov oti velo-higadeta li va'ashalechacha besimchah uveshirim betof uvechinor.
Why did you flee so stealthily? You robbed me and did not tell me. I would have sent you away, with joy and with song, with drum and harp.

28 Velo netashtani lenashek levanay velivnotay atah hiskalta aso.
You did not let me kiss my [grand]sons and daughters. Now see how foolishly you acted.

29 Yesh-le'el yadi la'asot imachem ra ve'Elokei avichem emesh amar elay lemor hishamer lecha midaber im-Ya'akov mitov ad-ra.
It is within the power of my hand to harm you, but the G-d of your father spoke to me last night saying, 'Guard yourself not to speak to Yaakov either good or evil.'

30 Ve'atah haloch halachta ki-nichsof nichsaftah leveyt avicha lamah ganavta et-elohai.
Now you have gone for you yearned for your father's house, but why did you steal my gods?"

31 Vaya'an Ya'akov vayomer le-Lavan ki yareti ki amarti pen-tigzol et-benotecha me'imi.
Yaakov replied and said to Lavan, "Because I was afraid, for I said you might forcibly take your daughters from me.

32 Im asher timtza et-eloheyca lo yichyeh neged acheynu haker-leca mah imadi vekach-lac velo-yada Ya'akov ki Rachel genavatam.
