Bereishit Chapter 19
א וַיָּבֹאוּ שְׁנֵי הַמַּלְאָכִים סְדֹמָה בָּעֶרֶב וְלוֹט יֹשֵׁב בְּשַׁעַר-סְדֹם וַיַּרְא-לוֹט וַיָּקָם לִקְרָאתָם וַיִּשְׁתַּחוּ אַפַּיִם אָרְצָה
Vayavo'u shenei hamal'achim Sdomah ba'erev veLot yoshev besha'ar-Sdom vayar-Lot vayakom likratam vayishtachu apayim artzah.
1. The two angels ame to Sedom in the evening, and Lot sat in the gate of Sedom. Lot saw them, and he got up to greet them and bowed with his face to the ground.
ב וַיֹּאמֶר הִנֶּה נָּא-אֲדֹנַי סוּרוּ נָא אֶל-בֵּית עַבְדְּכֶם וְלִינוּ וְרַחֲצוּ רַגְלֵיכֶם וְהִשְׁכַּמְתֶּם וַהֲלַכְתֶּם לְדַרְכְּכֶם וַיֹּאמְרוּ לֹּא כִּי בָרְחוֹב נָלִין
Vayomer hineh na-adonai suru na el-beit avdechem velinu verachatzu ragleichem vehishkamtem vahalachtem ledarkechem vayomeru lo ki varechov nalin.
2. [Lot] said, "Please my masters, turn aside to your servant's house. Spend the night, bathe your feet, and then get up early and continue on your way." They said, "No, we will spend the night in the street."
ג וַיִּפְצַר-בָּם מְאֹד--וַיָּסֻרוּ אֵלָיו וַיָּבֹאוּ אֶל-בֵּיתוֹ וַיַּעַשׂ לָהֶם מִשְׁתֶּה וּמַצּוֹת אָפָה וַיֹּאכֵלוּ
Vayiftzar-bam me'od vayasuru elav vayavo'u el-beito vaya'as lahem mishteh umatzot afah vayochelu.
3. [Lot] urged them very much until they turned toward him and came to his house. He made a feast for them and baked matzot, and they ate.
ד טֶרֶם יִשְׁכָּבוּ וְאַנְשֵׁי הָעִיר אַנְשֵׁי סְדֹם נָסַבּוּ עַל-הַבַּיִת מִנַּעַר וְעַד-זָקֵן כָּל-הָעָם מִקָּצֶה
Terem yishkavu ve'anshei ha'ir anshei Sdom nasabu al-habayit mina'ar ve'ad-zaken kol-ha'am mikatzeh.
4. They had not yet lain down when the towns people, the men of Sedom, surrounded the house - young and old alike - all the people from every quarter.
ה וַיִּקְרְאוּ אֶל-לוֹט וַיֹּאמְרוּ לוֹ אַיֵּה הָאֲנָשִׁים אֲשֶׁר-בָּאוּ אֵלֶיךָ הַלָּיְלָה הוֹצִיאֵם אֵלֵינוּ וְנֵדְעָה אֹתָם
Vayikre'u el-Lot vayomru lo ayeh ha'anashim asher-ba'u eleicha halailah hotzi'em eleinu venede'ah otam.
5. They called to Lot and said, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we may know them."
ו וַיֵּצֵא אֲלֵהֶם לוֹט הַפֶּתְחָה וְהַדֶּלֶת סָגַר אַחֲרָיו
Vayetze alehem Lot hapetchah vehadelet sagar acharav.
6. Lot went out to them to the enetrance, shutting the door behind him.
ז וַיֹּאמַר אַל-נָא אַחַי תָּרֵעוּ
Vayomar al-na achai tare'u.
7. He said, "My brothers, I beg you, do not act wickedly.
ח הִנֵּה-נָא לִי שְׁתֵּי בָנוֹת אֲשֶׁר לֹא-יָדְעוּ אִישׁ--אוֹצִיאָה-נָּא אֶתְהֶן אֲלֵיכֶם וַעֲשׂוּ לָהֶן כַּטּוֹב בְּעֵינֵיכֶם רַק לָאֲנָשִׁים הָאֵל אַל-תַּעֲשׂוּ דָבָר כִּי-עַל-כֵּן בָּאוּ בְּצֵל קֹרָתִי
Hineh-na li shtei vanot asher-lo yade'u ish otziah-na ethen aleichem va'asu lahen katov be'eineichem rak la'anashim ha'El al-ta'asu davar ki-al-ken ba'u betzel korati.
8. I have two daughters who have never known a man. I will bring them out ot you, and do as you please with them. Only do not do anything to these men, for it was for this reason that they came under the shadow of my rafters."
ט וַיֹּאמְרוּ גֶּשׁ-הָלְאָה וַיֹּאמְרוּ הָאֶחָד בָּא-לָגוּר וַיִּשְׁפֹּט שָׁפוֹט--עַתָּה נָרַע לְךָ מֵהֶם וַיִּפְצְרוּ בָאִישׁ בְּלוֹט מְאֹד וַיִּגְּשׁוּ לִשְׁבֹּר הַדָּלֶת
Vayomru gesh-hal'ah vayomeru ha'echad ba-lagur vayishpot shafot atah nara lecha mehem vayiftzeru va'ish beLot me'od vayigshu lishbor hadalet.
9. They said, "Get out of the way." [Other] said, "This one man came here as an immigrant, and all of a sudden he sets himself up as a judge. You'll get it worse than them." They pressed the man Lot very, and approached to break the door.
י וַיִּשְׁלְחוּ הָאֲנָשִׁים אֶת-יָדָם וַיָּבִיאוּ אֶת-לוֹט אֲלֵיהֶם הַבָּיְתָה וְאֶת-הַדֶּלֶת סָגָרוּ
Vayishlechu ha'anashim et-yadam vayavi'u et-Lot aleihem habaytah ve'et-hadelet sagaru.
10. The men put out their hands and pulled Lot to them, to the house, closing the door.
יא וְאֶת-הָאֲנָשִׁים אֲשֶׁר-פֶּתַח הַבַּיִת הִכּוּ בַּסַּנְוֵרִים מִקָּטֹן וְעַד-גָּדוֹל וַיִּלְאוּ לִמְצֹא הַפָּתַח
Ve'et-ha'anashim asher-petach habayit hiku basanverim mikaton ve'ad-gadol vayil'u limtzo hapatach.
11. The men who were at the entrance of the house, they struck with blindness - young and old alike - and they tried in vain to find the entrance.
יב וַיֹּאמְרוּ הָאֲנָשִׁים אֶל-לוֹט עֹד מִי-לְךָ פֹה--חָתָן וּבָנֶיךָ וּבְנֹתֶיךָ וְכֹל אֲשֶׁר-לְךָ בָּעִיר הוֹצֵא מִן-הַמָּקוֹם
Vayomeru ha'anashim el-Lot od mi-lecha foh chatan uvaneicha uvnoteicha vechol asher-lecha ba'ir hotze min-hamakom.
12. The men said to Lot, "Who else do you have here - a son-in-law, your sons, your daughters? Whoever you have in the city, get them out of the place.
יג כִּי-מַשְׁחִתִים אֲנַחְנוּ אֶת-הַמָּקוֹם הַזֶּה כִּי-גָדְלָה צַעֲקָתָם אֶת-פְּנֵי יְהוָה וַיְשַׁלְּחֵנוּ יְהוָה לְשַׁחֲתָהּ
Ki-mashchitim anachnu et-hamakom hazeh ki-gadlah tza'akatam et-penei HASHEM vayeshalchenu HASHEM leshachatah.
13. We are about to destroy this place, for their outcry is great before HASHEM. HASHEM has sent us to destroy it."
יד וַיֵּצֵא לוֹט וַיְדַבֵּר אֶל-חֲתָנָיו לֹקְחֵי בְנֹתָיו וַיֹּאמֶר קוּמוּ צְּאוּ מִן-הַמָּקוֹם הַזֶּה כִּי-מַשְׁחִית יְהוָה אֶת-הָעִיר וַיְהִי כִמְצַחֵק בְּעֵינֵי חֲתָנָיו
Vayetze Lot vayedaber el-chatanav lokechei venotav vayomer kumu tze'u min-hamakom hazeh ki-mashchit HASHEM et-ha'ir vayehi chimetzachek be'einei chatanav.
14. Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law who had married his daughters, and he said, "Get up! Get out of this place! HASHEM is about to destroy the city!" To his sons-in-law, it was all a big joke.
טו וּכְמוֹ הַשַּׁחַר עָלָה וַיָּאִיצוּ הַמַּלְאָכִים בְּלוֹט לֵאמֹר קוּם קַח אֶת-אִשְׁתְּךָ וְאֶת-שְׁתֵּי בְנֹתֶיךָ הַנִּמְצָאֹת--פֶּן-תִּסָּפֶה בַּעֲוֺן הָעִיר
Uchemo hashachar alah vaya'itzu hamal'achim beLot lemor kum kach et-ishtecha ve'et-shtei venoteicha hanimtza'ot pen-tisafeh ba'avon ha'ir.
15. As dawn was breaking, the angels urged Lot on, saying, "Get up. Take your wife and two daughters who are here, lest you be swept away for the city's sin."
טז וַיִּתְמַהְמָהּ--וַיַּחֲזִיקוּ הָאֲנָשִׁים בְּיָדוֹ וּבְיַד-אִשְׁתּוֹ וּבְיַד שְׁתֵּי בְנֹתָיו בְּחֶמְלַת יְהוָה עָלָיו וַיֹּצִאֻהוּ וַיַּנִּחֻהוּ מִחוּץ לָעִיר
Vayitmahmah vayachaziku ha'anashim beyado uveyad-ishto uveyad shtei venotav bechemlat HASHEM alav vayotzi'uhu vayanichuhu michutz la'ir.
16. He hesitated. The men grabbed his hand and the hand of his wife and two daughters - since HASHEM had pity on him. They brought him out and placed him outside the city.
יז וַיְהִי כְהוֹצִיאָם אֹתָם הַחוּצָה וַיֹּאמֶר הִמָּלֵט עַל-נַפְשֶׁךָ--אַל-תַּבִּיט אַחֲרֶיךָ וְאַל-תַּעֲמֹד בְּכָל-הַכִּכָּר הָהָרָה הִמָּלֵט פֶּן-תִּסָּפֶה
Vayehi chehotzi'am otam hachutzah vayomer himalet al-nafshecha al-tabit achareicha ve'al-ta'amod bechol-hakikar haharah himalet pen-tisafeh.
17. When [the angel] had taken them out [of the city], he said, "Run for your life! Do not look back. Do not stand still anywhere in the valley. Flee to the hills, lest you be swept away."
יח וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹט אֲלֵהֶם אַל-נָא אֲדֹנָי
Vayomer Lot alehem al-na Adonai.
18. Lot said to them, "O my Master, no!
יט הִנֵּה-נָא מָצָא עַבְדְּךָ חֵן בְּעֵינֶיךָ וַתַּגְדֵּל חַסְדְּךָ אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתָ עִמָּדִי לְהַחֲיוֹת אֶת-נַפְשִׁי וְאָנֹכִי לֹא אוּכַל לְהִמָּלֵט הָהָרָה--פֶּן-תִּדְבָּקַנִי הָרָעָה וָמַתִּי
Hineh-na matza avdechah chen-be'eineicha vatagdel chasdecha asher asita imadi lehachayot et-nafshi ve'anochi lo uchal lehimalet haharah pen-tidbakani hara'ah vamati
19. Behold, your servant has found favor in your eyes; great is the kindness that you have done with me, sparing my life. I cannot escape to the hills, lest the evil attach itself to me and I die."
כ הִנֵּה-נָא הָעִיר הַזֹּאת קְרֹבָה לָנוּס שָׁמָּה--וְהִוא מִצְעָר אִמָּלְטָה נָּא שָׁמָּה הֲלֹא מִצְעָר הִוא--וּתְחִי נַפְשִׁי
Hineh-na ha'ir hazot kerovah lanus shamah vehi mitz'ar imaletah na shamah halo mitz'ar hi utechi nafshi.
20. "Behold, please, this city is close enough to escape to. It is insignificant. Please, I will flee there - isn't it insignificant? - and I will survive."
כא וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו--הִנֵּה נָשָׂאתִי פָנֶיךָ גַּם לַדָּבָר הַזֶּה לְבִלְתִּי הָפְכִּי אֶת-הָעִיר אֲשֶׁר דִּבַּרְתָּ
Vayomer elav hineh nasati faneicha gam ladavar hazeh levilti hofki et-ha'ir asher dibarta.
21. [The angel] said [to Lot], "I will also give you consideration regarding this. I will not overturn the city that you mentioned.
כב מַהֵר הִמָּלֵט שָׁמָּה כִּי לֹא אוּכַל לַעֲשׂוֹת דָּבָר עַד-בֹּאֲךָ שָׁמָּה עַל-כֵּן קָרָא שֵׁם-הָעִיר צוֹעַר
Maher himalet shamah ki lo uchal la'asot davar ad-boacha shamah al-ken kara shem-ha'ir Tzo'ar.
22. Hurry, flee there. I can do nothing until you arrive there." The city was therefore called Tzoar (Insignificant).
כג הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ יָצָא עַל-הָאָרֶץ וְלוֹט בָּא צֹעֲרָה
Hashemesh yatza al-ha'aretz veLot ba Tzo'arah.
23. The sun rose upon the earth, and Lot came to Tzoar.
כד וַיהוָה הִמְטִיר עַל-סְדֹם וְעַל-עֲמֹרָה--גָּפְרִית וָאֵשׁ מֵאֵת יְהוָה מִן-הַשָּׁמָיִם
Va'HASHEM himtir al-Sedom ve'al-Amorah gofrit va'esh me'et HASHEM min-hashamayim.
24. HASHEM made sulphur and fire rain down on Sedom and Amorah - from HASHEM, out of the sky.
כה וַיַּהֲפֹךְ אֶת-הֶעָרִים הָאֵל וְאֵת כָּל-הַכִּכָּר וְאֵת כָּל-יֹשְׁבֵי הֶעָרִים וְצֶמַח הָאֲדָמָה
Vayahafoch et-he'arim ha'El ve'et kol-hakikar ve'et kol-yoshvei he'arim vetzemach ha'adamah.
25. He overturned these cities along with the entire plain, including all the inhabitants of the cities and the vegetation on the ground.
כו וַתַּבֵּט אִשְׁתּוֹ מֵאַחֲרָיו וַתְּהִי נְצִיב מֶלַח
Vatabet ishto me'acharav vatehi netziv melach.
26. [Lot's] wife looked behind him; and she became a pillar of salt.
כז וַיַּשְׁכֵּם אַבְרָהָם, בַּבֹּקֶר אֶל-הַמָּקוֹם--אֲשֶׁר-עָמַד שָׁם אֶת-פְּנֵי יְהוָה
Vayashkem Avraham baboker el-hamakom asher-amad sham et-penei HASHEM.
27. Avraham to up early in the morning, [going back] to the place where he had stood before HASHEM.
כח וַיַּשְׁקֵף עַל-פְּנֵי סְדֹם וַעֲמֹרָה וְעַל-כָּל-פְּנֵי אֶרֶץ הַכִּכָּר וַיַּרְא וְהִנֵּה עָלָה קִיטֹר הָאָרֶץ כְּקִיטֹר הַכִּבְשָׁן
Vayashkef al-penei Sedom va'Amorah ve'al kol-penei eretz hakikar vayar vehineh alah kitor ha'aretz kekitor hakivshan.
28. [Avraham] gazed upon Sedom, Amorah and the whole land of the plain, and he saw heavy smoke rising form the earth, like the smoke of a kiln.
כט וַיְהִי בְּשַׁחֵת אֱלֹהִים אֶת-עָרֵי הַכִּכָּר וַיִּזְכֹּר אֱלֹהִים אֶת-אַבְרָהָם וַיְשַׁלַּח אֶת-לוֹט מִתּוֹךְ הַהֲפֵכָה בַּהֲפֹךְ אֶת-הֶעָרִים אֲשֶׁר-יָשַׁב בָּהֵן לוֹט
Vayehi beshachet Elokim et-arei hakikar vayizkor Elokim et-Avraham vayeshalach et-Lot mitoch hahafecha bahafoch et-he'arim asher-yashav bahen Lot.
29. When Elokim had destroyed the cities of the plain, Elokim remembered Avraham; and He sent Lot out of the upheaval when He overturned the cities in which Lot had lived.
ל וַיַּעַל לוֹט מִצּוֹעַר וַיֵּשֶׁב בָּהָר וּשְׁתֵּי בְנֹתָיו עִמּוֹ כִּי יָרֵא לָשֶׁבֶת בְּצוֹעַר וַיֵּשֶׁב בַּמְּעָרָה--הוּא וּשְׁתֵּי בְנֹתָיו
Vaya'al Lot miTzo'ar vayeshev bahar ushtei venotav imo ki yare lashevet beTzo'ar vayeshev bame'arah hu ushtei venotav.
30. Lot went up from Tzoar and he settled in the hills along with his two daughters, since he wa afraid to remain in Tzoar. He lived in a cave; he and his two daughters.
לא וַתֹּאמֶר הַבְּכִירָה אֶל-הַצְּעִירָה אָבִינוּ זָקֵן וְאִישׁ אֵין בָּאָרֶץ לָבוֹא עָלֵינוּ כְּדֶרֶךְ כָּל-הָאָרֶץ
Vatomer habechirah el-hatze'irah avinu zaken ve'ish ein ba'aretz lavo aleinu kederech kol-ha'aretz.
31. The older girl said to the younger, "Our father is growing old, and there is no man on earth to marry us in a normal manner.
לב לְכָה נַשְׁקֶה אֶת-אָבִינוּ יַיִן וְנִשְׁכְּבָה עִמּוֹ וּנְחַיֶּה מֵאָבִינוּ זָרַע
Lechah nashkeh et-avinu yayin venishkevah imo unechayeh me'avinu zara.
32. Come, let's ply our father with wine and lie with him: we'll give life to offspring from our father."
לג וַתַּשְׁקֶיןָ אֶת-אֲבִיהֶן יַיִן בַּלַּיְלָה הוּא וַתָּבֹא הַבְּכִירָה וַתִּשְׁכַּב אֶת-אָבִיהָ וְלֹא-יָדַע בְּשִׁכְבָהּ וּבְקוּמָהּ
Vatashkeinah et-avihen yayin balailah hu vatavo habechirah vatishkav et-aviha velo-yada beshichvah uvekumah.
33. They plied their father with wine that night; and the older girl went and lay with her father. He was not aware that she lay down or got up.
לד וַיְהִי מִמָּחֳרָת וַתֹּאמֶר הַבְּכִירָה אֶל-הַצְּעִירָה הֵן-שָׁכַבְתִּי אֶמֶשׁ אֶת-אָבִי נַשְׁקֶנּוּ יַיִן גַּם-הַלַּיְלָה וּבֹאִי שִׁכְבִי עִמּוֹ וּנְחַיֶּה מֵאָבִינוּ זָרַע
Vayehi mimachorat vatomer habechirah el-hatze'irah hen-shachavti emesh et-avi nashkenu yayin gam-halailah uvoi shichvi imo unechayeh me'avinu zara.
34. The next day, the older girl said to the younger, "Last night it was I who lay with my father. Let's ply him with wine tonight too. Come, lie with him and we will give life to offspring from our father."
לה וַתַּשְׁקֶיןָ גַּם בַּלַּיְלָה הַהוּא אֶת-אֲבִיהֶן--יָיִן וַתָּקָם הַצְּעִירָה וַתִּשְׁכַּב עִמּוֹ וְלֹא-יָדַע בְּשִׁכְבָהּ וּבְקֻמָהּ
Vatashkeinah gam balailah hahu et-avihen yayin vatakom hatze'irah vatishkav imo velo-yada beshichvah uvekumah.
35. That night they also plied their father with wine. The younger girl got up and slept with him. He was not aware that she lay down or got up.
לו וַתַּהֲרֶיןָ שְׁתֵּי בְנוֹת-לוֹט מֵאֲבִיהֶן
Vatahareinah shtei venot-Lot me-avihen.
36. Lot's two daugthers became pregnant from their father.
לז וַתֵּלֶד הַבְּכִירָה בֵּן וַתִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ מוֹאָב הוּא אֲבִי-מוֹאָב עַד-הַיּוֹם
Vateled habechirah ben vatikra shmo Mo'av hu avi-Mo'av ad-hayom.
37. The older girl had a son, and she named him Moav. He is the ancestor of [the nation] Moav that exists even today.
לח וְהַצְּעִירָה גַם-הִוא יָלְדָה בֵּן וַתִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ בֶּן-עַמִּי הוּא אֲבִי בְנֵי-עַמּוֹן עַד-הַיּוֹם
Vehatze'irah gam-hi yaldah ben vatikra shmo Ben-Ami hu avi venei-Amon ad-hayom.
38. The younger girl also had a son and she named him Ben-Ami. He is the ancestor of the people of Amon who exist even today.
