Bereishit Chapter 25

 

א וַיֹּסֶף אַבְרָהָם וַיִּקַּח אִשָּׁה וּשְׁמָהּ קְטוּרָה

 

 

Vayosef Avraham vayikach ishah ushmah Kturah.

 

 

1. Avraham once again married a woman. Her name was Keturah.

 

 

ב וַתֵּלֶד לוֹ אֶת-זִמְרָן וְאֶת-יָקְשָׁן וְאֶת-מְדָן וְאֶת-מִדְיָן--וְאֶת-יִשְׁבָּק וְאֶת-שׁוּחַ

 

 

Vateled lo et-Zimran ve'et-Yakshan ve'et-Medan ve'et-Midyan ve'et-Yishbak ve'et-Shuach.

 

 

2. She bore him Zimran, Yakshan, Medan, Midyan, Yishbak, and Shuach.

 

 

ג וְיָקְשָׁן יָלַד אֶת-שְׁבָא וְאֶת-דְּדָן וּבְנֵי דְדָן הָיוּ אַשּׁוּרִם וּלְטוּשִׁם וּלְאֻמִּים

 

 

VeYokshan yalad et-Sheva ve'et-Dedan uvenei Dedan hayu Ashurim uLtushim uLe'umim.

 

 

3. Yakshan fathered Sheva and Dedan. The sons of Dedan were the Ashurim, Letushim and Leumim.

 

 

ד וּבְנֵי מִדְיָן, עֵיפָה וָעֵפֶר וַחֲנֹךְ, וַאֲבִידָע, וְאֶלְדָּעָה; כָּל-אֵלֶּה, בְּנֵי קְטוּרָה

 

 

Uvenei Midyan Eifah vaEfer vaChanoch va'Avida ve'Elda'ah kol-eleh benei Keturah.

 

 

4. The sons of Midyan were Eifah, Efer, Chanoch, Avida, and Eldaah. All of these were Keturah's children.

 

 

ה וַיִּתֵּן אַבְרָהָם אֶת-כָּל-אֲשֶׁר-לוֹ לְיִצְחָק

 

 

Vayiten Avraham et-kol-asher-lo le-Yitzchak.

 

 

5. Avraham gave all that he had to Yitzchak.

 

 

ו וְלִבְנֵי הַפִּילַגְשִׁים אֲשֶׁר לְאַבְרָהָם נָתַן אַבְרָהָם מַתָּנֹת וַיְשַׁלְּחֵם מֵעַל יִצְחָק בְּנוֹ בְּעוֹדֶנּוּ חַי קֵדְמָה אֶל-אֶרֶץ קֶדֶם

 

 

Velivnei hapilagshim asher le-Avraham natan Avraham matanot vayeshalechem me'al Yitzchak beno be'odenu chai kedmah el-eretz Kedem.

 

 

6. To the sons of the concubines that Avraham had, Avraham gave gifts. He sent them away from the vicinity of Yitzchak his son, to the country of he East, while he was still alive.

 

 

ז וְאֵלֶּה יְמֵי שְׁנֵי-חַיֵּי אַבְרָהָם--אֲשֶׁר-חָי: מְאַת שָׁנָה וְשִׁבְעִים שָׁנָה וְחָמֵשׁ שָׁנִים

 

 

Ve'eleh yemei shnei-chayei Avraham asher-chai me'at shanah veshiv'im shanah vechamesh shanim.

 

 

7. These are the days of the years of Avraham's life which he had lived: One hundred years, seventy years, and five years.

 

 

ח וַיִּגְוַע וַיָּמָת אַבְרָהָם בְּשֵׂיבָה טוֹבָה זָקֵן וְשָׂבֵעַ; וַיֵּאָסֶף אֶל-עַמָּיו

 

 

Vayigva vayamot Avraham beseivah tovah zaken vesavea vaye'asef el-amav.

 

 

8. Avraham expired and died in a good old age, old and satisfied, and he was gathered to his people.

 

 

ט וַיִּקְבְּרוּ אֹתוֹ יִצְחָק וְיִשְׁמָעֵאל בָּנָיו אֶל-מְעָרַת הַמַּכְפֵּלָה: אֶל-שְׂדֵה עֶפְרֹן בֶּן-צֹחַר הַחִתִּי אֲשֶׁר עַל-פְּנֵי מַמְרֵא

 

 

Vayikberu oto Yitzchak veYishma'el banav el-me'arat haMachpelah el-sedeh Efron ben-Tzohar hachiti asher al-penei Mamre -

 

 

9. His sons, Yitzchak and Yishmael buried him in Machpelah Cave, in the field of Efron son of Tzohar the Chitti, which borders Mamre -

 

 

י הַשָּׂדֶה אֲשֶׁר-קָנָה אַבְרָהָם מֵאֵת בְּנֵי-חֵת--שָׁמָּה קֻבַּר אַבְרָהָם וְשָׂרָה אִשְׁתּוֹ

 

 

Hasadeh asher-kanah Avraham me'et benei-Chet shamah kubar Avraham veSarah ishto.

 

 

10. - the field that Avraham purchased from the children of Chet - this is where Avraham and his wife Sarah were buried.

 

 

יא וַיְהִי אַחֲרֵי מוֹת אַבְרָהָם וַיְבָרֶךְ אֱלֹהִים אֶת-יִצְחָק בְּנוֹ וַיֵּשֶׁב יִצְחָק עִם-בְּאֵר לַחַי רֹאִי

 

 

Vayehi acharei mot Avraham vayevarech Elokim et-Yitzchak beno vayeshev Yitzchak im-Be'er Lachai Ro'i.

 

 

11. After Avraham died, G-d blessed his son Yitzchak. Yitzchak lived in the vicinity of Beer Lachai Roi.

 

 

יב וְאֵלֶּה תֹּלְדֹת יִשְׁמָעֵאל בֶּן-אַבְרָהָם: אֲשֶׁר יָלְדָה הָגָר הַמִּצְרִית שִׁפְחַת שָׂרָה--לְאַבְרָהָם

 

 

Ve'eleh toldot Yishma'el ben-Avraham asher yaldah Hagar haMitzrit shifchat Sarah le-Avraham:

 

 

12. These are the chronicles of Yishmael son of Avraham, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's slave, bore to Avraham:

 

 

יג וְאֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת בְּנֵי יִשְׁמָעֵאל בִּשְׁמֹתָם לְתוֹלְדֹתָם: בְּכֹר יִשְׁמָעֵאל נְבָיֹת וְקֵדָר וְאַדְבְּאֵל וּמִבְשָׂם

 

 

Ve'eleh shemot benei Yishma'el bishmotam letoldotam bechor Yishma'el Nevayot veKedar ve'Adbe'el uMivsam.

 

 

13. These are the names of Yishmael's sons, named according to their births: Nevayot, Yishmael's first born, Kedar, Adbeel, Mivsam.

 

 

יד וּמִשְׁמָע וְדוּמָה וּמַשָּׂא

 

 

UMishma veDumah uMasa.

 

 

14. Mishma, Dumah, Masa,

 

 

טו חֲדַד וְתֵימָא יְטוּר נָפִישׁ וָקֵדְמָה

 

 

Chadar veTeima Yetur Nafish vaKedmah.

 

 

15. Chadad, Teima, Yetur, Nafish and Kedmah.

 

 

טז אֵלֶּה הֵם בְּנֵי יִשְׁמָעֵאל וְאֵלֶּה שְׁמֹתָם בְּחַצְרֵיהֶם וּבְטִירֹתָם--שְׁנֵים-עָשָׂר נְשִׂיאִם לְאֻמֹּתָם

 

 

Eleh hem benei Yishma'el ve'eleh shmotam bechatzreihem uvetirotam shneim-asar nesi'im le'umotam.

 

 

16. These are Yishmael's sons, and these are their names, in their courtyards and strongholds - twelve princes in their nations.

 

 

יז וְאֵלֶּה שְׁנֵי חַיֵּי יִשְׁמָעֵאל--מְאַת שָׁנָה וּשְׁלֹשִׁים שָׁנָה וְשֶׁבַע שָׁנִים וַיִּגְוַע וַיָּמָת וַיֵּאָסֶף אֶל-עַמָּיו

 

 

Ve'eleh shenei chayei Yishma'el me'at shanah ushloshim shanah vesheva shanim vayigva vayamot vaye'asef el-amav.

 

 

17. And these are the years of Yishmael's life: 137 years. He expired and died, and was gathered to his people.

 

 

יח וַיִּשְׁכְּנוּ מֵחֲוִילָה עַד-שׁוּר אֲשֶׁר עַל-פְּנֵי מִצְרַיִם בֹּאֲכָה אַשּׁוּרָה עַל-פְּנֵי כָל-אֶחָיו נָפָל

 

 

Vayishkenu meChavilah ad-Shur asher al-penei Mitzrayim boachah Ashurah al-penei chol-echav nafal.

 

 

18. They lived from Chavilah to Shur (which borders Egypt) all the way to Assyria. He intruded against all his brothers.

 

 

יט וְאֵלֶּה תּוֹלְדֹת יִצְחָק בֶּן-אַבְרָהָם: אַבְרָהָם הוֹלִיד אֶת-יִצְחָק

 

 

Ve'eleh toldot Yitzchak ben-Avraham Avraham holid et-Yitzchak.

 

 

19. These are the chronicles of Yitzchak son of Avraham: Avraham fathered Yitzchak.

 

 

כ וַיְהִי יִצְחָק בֶּן-אַרְבָּעִים שָׁנָה בְּקַחְתּוֹ אֶת-רִבְקָה בַּת-בְּתוּאֵל הָאֲרַמִּי מִפַּדַּן אֲרָם--אֲחוֹת לָבָן הָאֲרַמִּי לוֹ לְאִשָּׁה

 

 

Vayehi Yitzchak ben-arba'im shanah bekachto et-Rivkah bat-Betu'el ha'Arami miPadan Aram achot Lavan ha'Arami lo le'ishah.

 

 

20. Yitzchak was 40 years old when he married Rivkah, daughter of Betuel the Aramaean of Padan Aram, sister of Lavan the Aramaean.

 

 

כא וַיֶּעְתַּר יִצְחָק לַיהוָה לְנֹכַח אִשְׁתּוֹ כִּי עֲקָרָה הִוא וַיֵּעָתֶר לוֹ יְהוָה וַתַּהַר רִבְקָה אִשְׁתּוֹ

 

 

Vaye'etar Yitzchak l'HASHEM lenochach ishto ki akarah hi vaye'ater lo HASHEM vatahar Rivkah ishto.

 

 

21. Yitzchak pleased with HASHEM on behalf of his wife because she was sterile. HASHEM granted his plea and his wife Rivkah became pregnant.

 

 

כב וַיִּתְרֹצְצוּ הַבָּנִים בְּקִרְבָּהּ וַתֹּאמֶר אִם-כֵּן לָמָּה זֶּה אָנֹכִי; וַתֵּלֶךְ לִדְרֹשׁ אֶת-יְהוָה

 

 

Vayitrotzatzu habanim bekirbah vatomer im-ken lamah zeh anochi vatelech lidrosh et-HASHEM.

 

 

22. The children clashed inside of her, and she said "If this is the way it is, why should I go on?" She went to inquire of HASHEM.

 

 

כג וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה לָהּ שְׁנֵי גֹיִים בְּבִטְנֵךְ וּשְׁנֵי לְאֻמִּים מִמֵּעַיִךְ יִפָּרֵדוּ וּלְאֹם מִלְאֹם יֶאֱמָץ וְרַב יַעֲבֹד צָעִיר

 

 

Vayomer HASHEM lah shnei goyim bevitnech ushnei le'umim mime'aych yiparedu ule'om mil'om ye'ematz verav ya'avod tza'ir.

 

 

23. HASHEM said to her, "Two nations are in your womb. Two governments shall separate from your insides. The upper hand will go from one government to the other, but the greater one will serve the younger."

 

 

כד וַיִּמְלְאוּ יָמֶיהָ לָלֶדֶת וְהִנֵּה תוֹמִם בְּבִטְנָהּ

 

 

Vayimle'u yameiha laledet vehineh tomim bevitnah.

 

 

24. When the time came for her to give birth, there were twins in her womb.

 

 

כה וַיֵּצֵא הָרִאשׁוֹן אַדְמוֹנִי כֻּלּוֹ כְּאַדֶּרֶת שֵׂעָר וַיִּקְרְאוּ שְׁמוֹ עֵשָׂו

 

 

Vayetze harishon admoni kulo ke'aderet se'ar vayikre'u shmo Esav.

 

 

25. The first one emerged reddish, completely covered with what was like a mantle of hair. They named him Esav.

 

 

כו וְאַחֲרֵי-כֵן יָצָא אָחִיו וְיָדוֹ אֹחֶזֶת בַּעֲקֵב עֵשָׂו וַיִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ יַעֲקֹב וְיִצְחָק בֶּן-שִׁשִּׁים שָׁנָה בְּלֶדֶת אֹתָם

 

 

Ve'acharei-chen yatza achiv veyado ochezet ba'akev Esav vayikra shmo Ya'akov veYitzchak ben-shishim shanah beledet otam.

 

 

26. After that his brother emerged, and his hand was grasping Esav's heel. He named him Yaakov. Yitzchak was 60 years old when [Rivkah] gave birth to them.

 

 

כז וַיִּגְדְּלוּ הַנְּעָרִים וַיְהִי עֵשָׂו אִישׁ יֹדֵעַ צַיִד אִישׁ שָׂדֶה וְיַעֲקֹב אִישׁ תָּם יֹשֵׁב אֹהָלִים

 

 

Vayigdelu hane'arim vayehi Esav ish yodea tza'id ish sadeh veYa'akov ish tam yoshev ohalim.

 

 

27. The boys grew up. Esav became a skilled trapper, a man of the field. Yaakov was a single-minded man, who lived in tents.

 

 

כח וַיֶּאֱהַב יִצְחָק אֶת-עֵשָׂו כִּי-צַיִד בְּפִיו וְרִבְקָה אֹהֶבֶת אֶת-יַעֲקֹב

 

 

Vaye'ehav Yitzchak et-Esav ki-tza'id befiv veRivkah ohevet et-Ya'akov.

 

 

28. Yitzchak favored Esav because he was a trapper with his mouth, bu Rivkah favored Yaakov.

 

 

כט וַיָּזֶד יַעֲקֹב נָזִיד וַיָּבֹא עֵשָׂו מִן-הַשָּׂדֶה וְהוּא עָיֵף

 

 

Vayazed Ya'akov nazid vayavo Esav min-hasadeh vehu ayef.

 

 

29. Yaakov once simmered a stew, and Esav came from the field exhausted.

 

 

ל וַיֹּאמֶר עֵשָׂו אֶל-יַעֲקֹב הַלְעִיטֵנִי נָא מִן-הָאָדֹם הָאָדֹם הַזֶּה--כִּי עָיֵף אָנֹכִי עַל-כֵּן קָרָא-שְׁמוֹ אֱדוֹם

 

 

Vayomer Esav el-Ya'akov hal'iteni na min-ha'adom ha'adom hazeh ki ayef anochi al-ken kara-shmo Edom.

 

 

30. Esav said to Yaakov, "Please give me a swallow of this red stuff. I'm exhausted." He was therefore given the name Edom.

 

 

לא וַיֹּאמֶר יַעֲקֹב: מִכְרָה כַיּוֹם אֶת-בְּכֹרָתְךָ לִי

 

 

Vayomer Ya'akov michrah chayom et-bechoratecha li.

 

 

31. Yaaov said, "As of today, sell me your birthright."

 

 

לב וַיֹּאמֶר עֵשָׂו הִנֵּה אָנֹכִי הוֹלֵךְ לָמוּת וְלָמָּה-זֶּה לִי בְּכֹרָה

 

 

Vayomer Esav hineh anochi holech lamut velamah-zeh li bechorah.

 

 

32. Esav said, "Here I am going to die. Of what use is a birthright to me?"

 

 

לג וַיֹּאמֶר יַעֲקֹב הִשָּׁבְעָה לִּי כַּיּוֹם וַיִּשָּׁבַע לוֹ וַיִּמְכֹּר אֶת-בְּכֹרָתוֹ לְיַעֲקֹב

 

 

Vayomer Ya'akov hishave'ah li kayom vayishava lo vayimkor et-bechorato le-Ya'akov.

 

 

33. Yaakov said, "As of today, make an oath to me." [Esav] made the oath and sold his birthright to Yaakov.

 

 

לד וְיַעֲקֹב נָתַן לְעֵשָׂו לֶחֶם וּנְזִיד עֲדָשִׁים וַיֹּאכַל וַיֵּשְׁתְּ וַיָּקָם וַיֵּלַךְ וַיִּבֶז עֵשָׂו אֶת-הַבְּכֹרָה

 

 

VeYa'akov natan le-Esav lechem unezid adashim vayochal vayesht vayakom vayelach vayivez Esav et-habechorah.

 

 

34. Yaakov gave Esav bread and lentil stew. [Esav] ate, drank, got up and left. Esav thus rejected the birthright.
