Bereishit Chapter 32
א וַיַּשְׁכֵּם לָבָן בַּבֹּקֶר וַיְנַשֵּׁק לְבָנָיו וְלִבְנוֹתָיו--וַיְבָרֶךְ אֶתְהֶם וַיֵּלֶךְ וַיָּשָׁב לָבָן לִמְקֹמוֹ
Vayashkem Lavan baboker vayenashek levanav velivnotav vayevarech ethem vayelech vayashav Lavan limekomo.
1. Lavan got up early in the morning, kissed his sons and daughters, and blessed them. Lavan then left and returned home.
ב וְיַעֲקֹב הָלַךְ לְדַרְכּוֹ וַיִּפְגְּעוּ-בוֹ מַלְאֲכֵי אֱלֹהִים
VeYa'akov halach ledarko vayifge'u-vo mal'achei Elokim.
2. Yaakov went on his way. Angels of G-d encountered him.
ג וַיֹּאמֶר יַעֲקֹב כַּאֲשֶׁר רָאָם מַחֲנֵה אֱלֹהִים זֶה וַיִּקְרָא שֵׁם-הַמָּקוֹם הַהוּא מַחֲנָיִם
Vayomer Ya'akov ka'asher ra'am machaneh Elokim zeh vayikra shem-hamakom hahu Machanayim.
3. When Yaakov saw them, he said, "This is G-d's camp." He named the place Twin Camps (Machanayim)
ד וַיִּשְׁלַח יַעֲקֹב מַלְאָכִים לְפָנָיו אֶל-עֵשָׂו אָחִיו אַרְצָה שֵׂעִיר שְׂדֵה אֱדוֹם
Vayishlach Ya'akov mal'achim lefanav el-Esav achiv artzah Se'ir sdeh Edom.
4. Yaakov sent messengets ahead of him to his brother Esav, toward the land of Se'ir, to Edom's Field.
ה וַיְצַו אֹתָם לֵאמֹר כֹּה תֹאמְרוּן לַאדֹנִי לְעֵשָׂו: כֹּה אָמַר עַבְדְּךָ יַעֲקֹב עִם-לָבָן גַּרְתִּי וָאֵחַר עַד-עָתָּה
Vayetzav otam lemor koh tomrun ladoni le-Esav koh amar avdecha Ya'akov im-Lavan garti va'echar ad-atah.
5. He gave them instructions, saying: "This is what you must say to my master Esav, 'Your servant Yaakov says, I have been staying with Lavan, and have been delayed until now.'"
ו וַיְהִי-לִי שׁוֹר וַחֲמוֹר צֹאן וְעֶבֶד וְשִׁפְחָה וָאֶשְׁלְחָה לְהַגִּיד לַאדֹנִי לִמְצֹא-חֵן בְּעֵינֶיךָ
Vayehi-li shor vachamor tzon ve'eved veshifchah va'eshlechah lehagid ladoni limtzo-chen be'eineicha.
6. "'I have acquired bulls, donkeys, sheep, servants and maids. I am sending [messengers] to tell my master, to gain favor in your eyes.'"
ז וַיָּשֻׁבוּ הַמַּלְאָכִים אֶל-יַעֲקֹב לֵאמֹר: בָּאנוּ אֶל-אָחִיךָ אֶל-עֵשָׂו וְגַם הֹלֵךְ לִקְרָאתְךָ וְאַרְבַּע-מֵאוֹת אִישׁ עִמּוֹ
Vayashuvu hamal'achim el-Ya'akov lemor banu el-achicha el-Esav vegam holech likratcha ve'arba-me'ot ish imo.
7. The messengers returned to Yaakov, saying "We came to your brother, to Esav, and he is also heading toward you. There are four hundred men with him!"
ח וַיִּירָא יַעֲקֹב מְאֹד וַיֵּצֶר לוֹ וַיַּחַץ אֶת-הָעָם אֲשֶׁר-אִתּוֹ וְאֶת-הַצֹּאן וְאֶת-הַבָּקָר וְהַגְּמַלִּים--לִשְׁנֵי מַחֲנוֹת
Vayira Ya'akov me'od vayetzer lo vayachatz et-ha'am asher-ito ve'et-hatzon ve'et-habakar vehagmalim lishneh machanot.
8. Yaakov was very frightened, and he begn to worry. He divided the people with him, along with the sheep, cattle and camels, into two camps.
ט וַיֹּאמֶר אִם-יָבוֹא עֵשָׂו אֶל-הַמַּחֲנֶה הָאַחַת וְהִכָּהוּ--וְהָיָה הַמַּחֲנֶה הַנִּשְׁאָר לִפְלֵיטָה
Vayomer im-yavo Esav el-hamachaneh ha'achat vehikahu vehayah hamachaneh hanish'ar lifleitah.
9. He said [to himself], "If Esav comes to one camp and attacks it, the remaining camp will survive."
י וַיֹּאמֶר יַעֲקֹב אֱלֹהֵי אָבִי אַבְרָהָם, וֵאלֹהֵי אָבִי יִצְחָק: יְהוָה הָאֹמֵר אֵלַי שׁוּב לְאַרְצְךָ וּלְמוֹלַדְתְּךָ--וְאֵיטִיבָה עִמָּךְ
Vayomer Ya'akov Elokei avi Avraham ve'Elokei avi Yitzchak HASHEM ha'omer elai shuv le'artzecha ulemoladetecha ve'eitivah imach.
10. Yaakov said, "O G-d of my father Avraham and G-d of my father Yitzchak. You are the one who told me, 'Return to the land of your birthplace, and I will make things go well for you.'
יא קָטֹנְתִּי מִכֹּל הַחֲסָדִים וּמִכָּל-הָאֱמֶת אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתָ אֶת-עַבְדֶּךָ: כִּי בְמַקְלִי עָבַרְתִּי אֶת-הַיַּרְדֵּן הַזֶּה וְעַתָּה הָיִיתִי לִשְׁנֵי מַחֲנוֹת
Katonti mikol hachasadim umikol-ha'emet asher asita et-avdecha ki vemakli avarti et-haYarden hazeh ve'atah hayiti lishnei machanot.
11. "I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness that You have shown to Your servant. I crossed tis Yarden with my staff, and now I have become two camps."
יב הַצִּילֵנִי נָא מִיַּד אָחִי מִיַּד עֵשָׂו: כִּי-יָרֵא אָנֹכִי אֹתוֹ--פֶּן-יָבוֹא וְהִכַּנִי אֵם עַל-בָּנִים
Hatzileni-na miyad achi miyad Esav ki-yare anochi oto pen-yavo vehikani em al-banim.
12. "Rescue me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esav. I am afraid that he will come and strike me down - mother and children alike."
יג וְאַתָּה אָמַרְתָּ הֵיטֵב אֵיטִיב עִמָּךְ וְשַׂמְתִּי אֶת-זַרְעֲךָ כְּחוֹל הַיָּם אֲשֶׁר לֹא-יִסָּפֵר מֵרֹב
Ve'atah amarta heitev eitiv imach vesamti et-zar'acha kechol hayam asher lo-yisafer merov.
13. "You said, 'I will make things go well for you. I will make your offspring like the sand grains of the seas, which are too numberous to count.'"
יד וַיָּלֶן שָׁם בַּלַּיְלָה הַהוּא וַיִּקַּח מִן-הַבָּא בְיָדוֹ מִנְחָה--לְעֵשָׂו אָחִיו
Vayalen sham balailah hahu vayikach min-haba veyado mincha le-Esav achiv.
14. He spent that night there. He took that which came in his hand as a tribute for his brother Esav:
טו עִזִּים מָאתַיִם, וּתְיָשִׁים עֶשְׂרִים, רְחֵלִים מָאתַיִם, וְאֵילִים עֶשְׂרִים
Izim matayim uteyashim esrim rechelim matayim ve'eilim esrim.
15. 200 female goats, 20 male goats, 200 ewes, 20 rams,
טז גְּמַלִּים מֵינִיקוֹת וּבְנֵיהֶם שְׁלֹשִׁים פָּרוֹת אַרְבָּעִים וּפָרִים עֲשָׂרָה אֲתֹנֹת עֶשְׂרִים וַעְיָרִם עֲשָׂרָה
Gemalim meinikot uvneihem shloshim parot arba'im ufarim asarah atonot esrim vaeyarim asarah.
16. 30 nursing camels with their young, 40 cows, 10 bulls, 20 female donkeys, 10 male donkeys.
יז וַיִּתֵּן בְּיַד-עֲבָדָיו עֵדֶר עֵדֶר לְבַדּוֹ; וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל-עֲבָדָיו עִבְרוּ לְפָנַי וְרֶוַח תָּשִׂימוּ בֵּין עֵדֶר וּבֵין עֵדֶר
Vayiten beyad-avadav eder eder levado vayomer el-avadav ivru lefanai verevach tasimu bein eder uvein eder.
17. He placed them in the hand of his servants, each herd by itself. He said to his servants, "Pass on ahead of me. Keep a space between one herd and the next."
יח וַיְצַו אֶת-הָרִאשׁוֹן לֵאמֹר: כִּי יִפְגָשְׁךָ עֵשָׂו אָחִי וּשְׁאֵלְךָ לֵאמֹר לְמִי-אַתָּה וְאָנָה תֵלֵךְ וּלְמִי אֵלֶּה לְפָנֶיךָ
Vayetzav et-harishon lemor ki yifgashcha Esav achi ushe'elcha lemor lemi-atah ve'anah telech ulemi eleh lefaneicha.
18. He gave the first one instructions, saying, "When my brother Esav encounters you, he will ask, 'To whom do you belong, where are you going, and who owns all this that is before you?'"
יט וְאָמַרְתָּ לְעַבְדְּךָ לְיַעֲקֹב--מִנְחָה הִוא שְׁלוּחָה לַאדֹנִי לְעֵשָׂו וְהִנֵּה גַם-הוּא אַחֲרֵינוּ
Ve'amarta le'avdecha le-Ya'akov mincha hi shluchah ladoni le-Esav vehineh gam-hu achareinu.
19. "You must reply, 'To your servant Yaakov. It is a tribute sent to my master Esav. [Yaakov] himself is right behind us.'".
כ וַיְצַו גַּם אֶת-הַשֵּׁנִי גַּם אֶת-הַשְּׁלִישִׁי גַּם אֶת-כָּל-הַהֹלְכִים אַחֲרֵי הָעֲדָרִים לֵאמֹר: כַּדָּבָר הַזֶּה תְּדַבְּרוּן אֶל-עֵשָׂו בְּמֹצַאֲכֶם אֹתוֹ
Vayetzav gam et-hasheni gam et-hashlishi gam et-kol-haholchim acharei ha'adarim lemor kadavar hazeh tedabrun el-Esav bemotza'achem oto.
20. He also gave similar instructions to the second [group], and also to the third, as well as to all who followed after the herds, saying, "You must say the same thing to Esav when you find him."
כא וַאֲמַרְתֶּם--גַּם הִנֵּה עַבְדְּךָ יַעֲקֹב, אַחֲרֵינוּ: כִּי-אָמַר אֲכַפְּרָה פָנָיו, בַּמִּנְחָה הַהֹלֶכֶת לְפָנָי, וְאַחֲרֵי-כֵן אֶרְאֶה פָנָיו, אוּלַי יִשָּׂא פָנָי
Va'amartem gam hineh avdecha Ya'akov achareinu ki-amar achaprah fanav baminchah haholechet lefanai ve'acharei-chen er'eh fanav ulai yisa fanai.
21. "You must also say, 'Your servant Yaakov is right behind us.' [Yaakov] said [to himself], "I will win him over with the tribute that is being sent ahead of me, and then I will see his face. Hopefully, he will forgive me."
כב וַתַּעֲבֹר הַמִּנְחָה עַל-פָּנָיו וְהוּא לָן בַּלַּיְלָה-הַהוּא בַּמַּחֲנֶה
Vata'avor haminchah al-panav vehu lan balaylah-hahu bamachaneh.
22. The tribute passed by in front of him. He spent that night in the camp.
כג וַיָּקָם בַּלַּיְלָה הוּא וַיִּקַּח אֶת-שְׁתֵּי נָשָׁיו וְאֶת-שְׁתֵּי שִׁפְחֹתָיו וְאֶת-אַחַד עָשָׂר יְלָדָיו; וַיַּעֲבֹר אֵת מַעֲבַר יַבֹּק
Vayakom balailah hu vayikach et-shtei nashav ve'et-shtei shifchotav ve'et-achar asar yeladav vaya'avor et Ma'avar Yabok.
23. He got up that night and took his two wives, his two handmaids, and his eleven sons. He waded across the Yabok [River].
כד וַיִּקָּחֵם--וַיַּעֲבִרֵם אֶת-הַנָּחַל וַיַּעֲבֵר אֶת-אֲשֶׁר-לוֹ
Vayikachem vaya'avirem et-hanachal vaya'aver et-asher-lo.
24. He took them, and sent them across the stream. He also sent across all that he owned.
כה וַיִּוָּתֵר יַעֲקֹב לְבַדּוֹ וַיֵּאָבֵק אִישׁ עִמּוֹ עַד עֲלוֹת הַשָּׁחַר
Vayivater Ya'akov levado vaye'avek ish imo ad alot hashachar.
25. Yaakov remained alone. A man [appeared and] wrestled with him until just before daybreak.
כו וַיַּרְא כִּי לֹא יָכֹל לוֹ וַיִּגַּע בְּכַף-יְרֵכוֹ וַתֵּקַע כַּף-יֶרֶךְ יַעֲקֹב בְּהֵאָבְקוֹ עִמּוֹ
Vayar ki lo yachol lo vayiga bechaf-yerecho vateka kaf-yerech Ya'akov behe'avko imo.
26. [The man] saw that he could not defeat him, and he struck the socket of his hip. Yaakov's hip joint was dislocated as he wrestled with [the man].
כז וַיֹּאמֶר שַׁלְּחֵנִי כִּי עָלָה הַשָּׁחַר וַיֹּאמֶר לֹא אֲשַׁלֵּחֲךָ כִּי אִם-בֵּרַכְתָּנִי
Vayomer shalcheni ki alah hashachar vayomer lo ashalechacha ki im-berachtani.
27. [The stranger] said, "Let me go! The dawn is breaking." [Yaakov] said, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."
כח וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו מַה-שְּׁמֶךָ וַיֹּאמֶר יַעֲקֹב
Vayomer elav mah-shmecha vayomer Ya'akov.
28. [The man] asked, "What is your name?" and he replied "Yaakov."
כט וַיֹּאמֶר לֹא יַעֲקֹב יֵאָמֵר עוֹד שִׁמְךָ--כִּי אִם-יִשְׂרָאֵל: כִּי-שָׂרִיתָ עִם-אֱלֹהִים וְעִם-אֲנָשִׁים וַתּוּכָל
Vayomer lo Ya'akov ye'amer od shimcha ki im-Yisra'el ki-sarita im-Elokim ve'im anashim vatuchal.
29. [The man] said, "No longer will your name be spoken of as Yaakov, but as Yisrael. You are great (sar) before G-d and man, and you have won."
ל וַיִּשְׁאַל יַעֲקֹב וַיֹּאמֶר הַגִּידָה-נָּא שְׁמֶךָ וַיֹּאמֶר לָמָּה זֶּה תִּשְׁאַל לִשְׁמִי וַיְבָרֶךְ אֹתוֹ שָׁם
Vayish'al Ya'akov vayomer hagida-na shmecha vayomer lamah zeh tish'al lishmi vayevarech oto sham.
30. Yaakov asked a question and said, "If you please, tell me your name." [The man] said, "Why then do you ask my name?" He blessed [Yaakov] in that place.
לא וַיִּקְרָא יַעֲקֹב שֵׁם הַמָּקוֹם פְּנִיאֵל: כִּי-רָאִיתִי אֱלֹהִים פָּנִים אֶל-פָּנִים וַתִּנָּצֵל נַפְשִׁי
Vayikra Ya'akov shem hamakom Peni'el ki-ra'iti Elokim panim el-panim vatinatzel nafshi.
31. Yaakov named the place G-d's Face (Peniel) - "For I have seen G-d face to face, and my soul has withstood it."
לב וַיִּזְרַח-לוֹ הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ כַּאֲשֶׁר עָבַר אֶת-פְּנוּאֵל וְהוּא צֹלֵעַ עַל-יְרֵכוֹ
Vayizrach-lo hashemesh ka'asher avar et-Penu'el vehu tzolea al-yerecho.
32. The sun rose for him as he passed by Penuel, and he was limping on his hip.
לג עַל-כֵּן לֹא-יֹאכְלוּ בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת-גִּיד הַנָּשֶׁה אֲשֶׁר עַל-כַּף הַיָּרֵךְ עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה: כִּי נָגַע בְּכַף-יֶרֶךְ יַעֲקֹב בְּגִיד הַנָּשֶׁה
Al-ken lo-yochlu venei-Yisra'el et-gid hanasheh asher al-kaf hayarech ad hayom hazeh ki naga bechaf-yerech Ya'akov begid hanasheh.
33. The Benei Yisrael therefore must not eat the displaced nerve on the hip joint to this very day. [The man] had hit Yaakov's hip joint on the displaced nerve.
