Bereishit Chapter 8

 

א וַיִּזְכֹּר אֱלֹהִים אֶת-נֹחַ וְאֵת כָּל-הַחַיָּה וְאֶת-כָּל-הַבְּהֵמָה אֲשֶׁר אִתּוֹ בַּתֵּבָה וַיַּעֲבֵר אֱלֹהִים רוּחַ עַל-הָאָרֶץ וַיָּשֹׁכּוּ הַמָּיִם

 

 

Vayizkor Elokim et-Noach ve'et kol-hachayah ve'et-kol-habehemah asher ito batevah vaya'aver Elokim ruach al-ha'aretz vayashoku hamayim.

 

 

1. G-d remembered Noach, and the wild beasts, and domestic animals, that were with him in the tevah. G-d made a wind blow on the earth, and the water subsided.

 

 

ב וַיִּסָּכְרוּ מַעְיְנֹת תְּהוֹם וַאֲרֻבֹּת הַשָּׁמָיִם וַיִּכָּלֵא הַגֶּשֶׁם מִן-הַשָּׁמָיִם

 

 

Vayisachru mayenot tehom va'arubot hashamayim vayikale hageshem min-hashamayim.

 

 

2. The wellsprings of the deep and the floodgates of heaven were sealed; the downpour from the heavens discontinued.

 

 

ג וַיָּשֻׁבוּ הַמַּיִם מֵעַל הָאָרֶץ הָלוֹךְ וָשׁוֹב וַיַּחְסְרוּ הַמַּיִם--מִקְצֵה חֲמִשִּׁים וּמְאַת יוֹם

 

 

Vayashuvu hamayim me'al ha'aretz haloch vashov vayachseru hamayim miktzeh chamishim ume'at yom.

 

 

3. The water receded from the earth, going back and forth; the water began to diminish at the end of the 150 days.

 

 

ד וַתָּנַח הַתֵּבָה בַּחֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁבִיעִי בְּשִׁבְעָה-עָשָׂר יוֹם לַחֹדֶשׁ עַל הָרֵי אֲרָרָט

 

 

Vatanach hatevah bachodesh hashvi'i beshiv'ah-asar yom lachodesh al harei Ararat.

 

 

4. In the seventh month, on the 17th day of the month, the ark rested on the mountains of Ararat.

 

 

ה וְהַמַּיִם הָיוּ הָלוֹךְ וְחָסוֹר עַד הַחֹדֶשׁ הָעֲשִׂירִי בָּעֲשִׂירִי בְּאֶחָד לַחֹדֶשׁ נִרְאוּ רָאשֵׁי הֶהָרִים

 

 

Vehamayim hayu haloch vechasor ad hachodesh ha'asiri ba'asiri be'echad lachodesh nir'u rashei heharim.

 

 

5. The water continued to diminish until the tenth month. In the tenth month, on the first of the month, the mountaintops became visible.

 

 

ו וַיְהִי מִקֵּץ אַרְבָּעִים יוֹם וַיִּפְתַּח נֹחַ אֶת-חַלּוֹן הַתֵּבָה אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה

 

 

Veyehi miketz arba'im yom vayiftach Noach et-chalon hatevah asher asah.

 

 

6. At the end of forty days, Noach opened the window of the tevah that he had made.

 

 

ז וַיְשַׁלַּח אֶת-הָעֹרֵב וַיֵּצֵא יָצוֹא וָשׁוֹב עַד-יְבֹשֶׁת הַמַּיִם מֵעַל הָאָרֶץ

 

 

Vayeshalach et-ha'orev vayetze yatzo vashov ad-yevoshet hamayim me'al ha'aretz.

 

 

7. He sent out the raven, and it departed, going back and forth until the water on the land dried up.

 

 

ח וַיְשַׁלַּח אֶת-הַיּוֹנָה מֵאִתּוֹ--לִרְאוֹת הֲקַלּוּ הַמַּיִם מֵעַל פְּנֵי הָאֲדָמָה

 

 

Vayeshalach et-hayonah me'ito lir'ot hakalu hamayim me'al penei ha'adamah.

 

 

8. He then sent away the dove to see if the water had subsided from the surface of the ground.

 

 

ט וְלֹא-מָצְאָה הַיּוֹנָה מָנוֹחַ לְכַף-רַגְלָהּ וַתָּשָׁב אֵלָיו אֶל-הַתֵּבָה--כִּי-מַיִם עַל-פְּנֵי כָל-הָאָרֶץ וַיִּשְׁלַח יָדוֹ וַיִּקָּחֶהָ וַיָּבֵא אֹתָהּ אֵלָיו אֶל-הַתֵּבָה

 

 

Velo-matz'ah hayonah manoach lechaf-raglah vatashov elav el-hatevah ki mayim al-penei chol-ha'aretz vayishlach yado vayikacheha vayaveh otah elav el-hatevah.

 

 

9. The dove could not find a place to rest its feet. It returned to him, to the tevah, because there was water over all the ground. [Noach] stretched out his hand and took it, bringing it to him in the tevah.

 

 

י וַיָּחֶל עוֹד שִׁבְעַת יָמִים אֲחֵרִים וַיֹּסֶף שַׁלַּח אֶת-הַיּוֹנָה מִן-הַתֵּבָה

 

 

Vayachel od shiv'at yamim acherim vayosef shalach et-hayonah min-hatevah.

 

 

10. He waited another seven days, and once again he sent out the dove from the tevah.

 

 

יא וַתָּבֹא אֵלָיו הַיּוֹנָה לְעֵת עֶרֶב וְהִנֵּה עֲלֵה-זַיִת טָרָף בְּפִיהָ וַיֵּדַע נֹחַ כִּי-קַלּוּ הַמַּיִם מֵעַל הָאָרֶץ

 

 

Vatavo elav hayonah le'et erev vehineh aleh-zayit taraf befiha vayeda Noach ki-kalu hamayim me'al ha'aretz.

 

 

11. The dove came to him toward evening, and there was a torn off olive leaf in its beak. Noach knew that the water had receded from the earth.

 

 

יב וַיִּיָּחֶל עוֹד שִׁבְעַת יָמִים אֲחֵרִים וַיְשַׁלַּח אֶת-הַיּוֹנָה וְלֹא-יָסְפָה שׁוּב-אֵלָיו עוֹד

 

 

Vayiyachel od shiv'at yamim acherim vayeshalach et-hayonah velo-yasfah shuv-elav od.

 

 

12. He waited yet another seven days and sent out the dove; it did not return to him again.

 

 

יג וַיְהִי בְּאַחַת וְשֵׁשׁ-מֵאוֹת שָׁנָה בָּרִאשׁוֹן בְּאֶחָד לַחֹדֶשׁ חָרְבוּ הַמַּיִם מֵעַל הָאָרֶץ וַיָּסַר נֹחַ אֶת-מִכְסֵה הַתֵּבָה וַיַּרְא וְהִנֵּה חָרְבוּ פְּנֵי הָאֲדָמָה

 

 

Vayehi be'achat veshesh-me'ot shanah barishon be'echad lachodesh charevu hamayim me'al ha'aretz vayasar Noach et-michseh hatevah vayar vehineh charevu penei ha'adamah

 

 

13. In the 601st year [of Noach's life], in the first [month], on the first of the month, the water on the land began to dry. Noach removed the tevah's hatch, and he saw that the surface of the ground was drying.

 

 

יד וּבַחֹדֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִי בְּשִׁבְעָה וְעֶשְׂרִים יוֹם לַחֹדֶשׁ--יָבְשָׁה הָאָרֶץ

 

 

Uvachodesh hasheni beshive'ah ve'esrim yom lachodesh yaveshah ha'aretz.

 

 

14. In the second month, on the 27th day of the month, the land was completely dry.

 

 

טו וַיְדַבֵּר אֱלֹהִים אֶל-נֹחַ לֵאמֹר

 

 

Vayedaber Elokim el-Noach lemor,

 

 

15. G-d spoke to Noach saying,

 

 

טז צֵא מִן-הַתֵּבָה--אַתָּה וְאִשְׁתְּךָ וּבָנֶיךָ וּנְשֵׁי-בָנֶיךָ אִתָּךְ

 

 

Tze min-hatevah atah ve'ishtecha uvaneicha unshei-vaneicha itach.

 

 

16. "Leave the tevah - you, along with your wife, your sons, and your sons' wives."

 

 

יז כָּל-הַחַיָּה אֲשֶׁר-אִתְּךָ מִכָּל-בָּשָׂר בָּעוֹף וּבַבְּהֵמָה וּבְכָל-הָרֶמֶשׂ הָרֹמֵשׂ עַל-הָאָרֶץ--הוצא (הַיְצֵא) אִתָּךְ וְשָׁרְצוּ בָאָרֶץ וּפָרוּ וְרָבוּ עַל-הָאָרֶץ

 

 

Kol-hachayah asher itcha mikol-basar ba'of uvabehemah uvechol-haremes haromes al-ha'aretz hayetze itach vesharetzu va'aretz ufaru veravu al-ha'aretz

 

 

17. "Every animal that is with you of all flesh, including birds, domestic animals, and creatures that creep on the earth, take out with you. Let them swarm on the land; let them breed and multiply on the earth."

 

 

יח וַיֵּצֵא-נֹחַ וּבָנָיו וְאִשְׁתּוֹ וּנְשֵׁי-בָנָיו אִתּוֹ

 

 

Vayetze-Noach uvanav ve'ishto uneshei-vanav ito.

 

 

18. Noach left the tevah along with his sons, his wife, and his sons' wives.

 

 

יט כָּל-הַחַיָּה כָּל-הָרֶמֶשׂ וְכָל-הָעוֹף כֹּל רוֹמֵשׂ עַל-הָאָרֶץ--לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתֵיהֶם יָצְאוּ מִן-הַתֵּבָה

 

 

Kol-hachayah kol-haremes vechol-ha'of kol-romes al-ha'aretz lemishpechoteihem yatze'u min-hatevah.

 

 

19. Every animal, every creeping thing, and every bird - all that creeps on the earth - left the tevah according to their families.

 

 

כ וַיִּבֶן נֹחַ מִזְבֵּחַ לַיהוָה וַיִּקַּח מִכֹּל הַבְּהֵמָה הַטְּהֹרָה וּמִכֹּל הָעוֹף הַטָּהוֹר וַיַּעַל עֹלֹת בַּמִּזְבֵּחַ

 

 

Vayiven Noach mizbe'ach l'HASHEM vayikach mikol habehemah hatehorah umikol ha'of hatahor vaya'al olot bamizbe'ach.

 

 

20. Noach built an altar to HASHEM. He took of all the clean domestic animals and of all the clean birds, and he sacrificed burnt offerings on the altar.

 

 

כא וַיָּרַח יְהוָה אֶת-רֵיחַ הַנִּיחֹחַ וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל-לִבּוֹ לֹא-אֹסִף לְקַלֵּל עוֹד אֶת-הָאֲדָמָה בַּעֲבוּר הָאָדָם כִּי יֵצֶר לֵב הָאָדָם רַע מִנְּעֻרָיו וְלֹא-אֹסִף עוֹד לְהַכּוֹת אֶת-כָּל-חַי כַּאֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתִי

 

 

Vayarach HASHEM et-re'ach hanichoach vayomer HASHEM el-libo lo osif lekalel od et-ha'adamah ba'avur ha'adam ki yetzer lev ha'adam ra mine'urav velo osif od lehakot et-kol-chai ka'asher asiti

 

 

21. HASHEM smelled the appeasing fragrance. HASHEM said to Himself, "Never again will I curse the soil because of man, for the inclination of man's heart is evil from his youth. I will never again strike down all life as I have just done."

 

 

כב עֹד כָּל-יְמֵי הָאָרֶץ: זֶרַע וְקָצִיר וְקֹר וָחֹם וְקַיִץ וָחֹרֶף וְיוֹם וָלַיְלָה--לֹא יִשְׁבֹּתוּ

 

 

Od kol-yemei ha'aretz zera vekatzir vekor vachom vekayitz vachoref veyom valailah lo yishbotu.

 

 

22. "As long as the earth lasts, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night, shall not again cease."
