Bereishit Chapter 22
א וַיְהִי אַחַר הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה וְהָאֱלֹהִים נִסָּה אֶת-אַבְרָהָם וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אַבְרָהָם וַיֹּאמֶר הִנֵּנִי
Vayehi achar hadevarim ha'eleh veha'Elokim nisa et-Avraham vayomer elav Avraham vayomer hineni.
1. After these events, G-d tested Avraham. He said to him, "Avraham!" [Avraham] said, "Here I am."
ב וַיֹּאמֶר קַח-נָא אֶת-בִּנְךָ אֶת-יְחִידְךָ אֲשֶׁר-אָהַבְתָּ אֶת-יִצְחָק וְלֶךְ-לְךָ אֶל-אֶרֶץ הַמֹּרִיָּה וְהַעֲלֵהוּ שָׁם לְעֹלָה עַל אַחַד הֶהָרִים אֲשֶׁר אֹמַר אֵלֶיךָ
Vayomer kach-na et-bincha et-yechidecha asher-ahavta et-Yitzchak velech-lecha el-eretz haMoriah veha'alehu sham le'olah al achad heharim asher omar eleicha.
2. [G-d] said, "Take your son, your only one, whom you love - Yitzchak - and go away to the land of Moriah. Bring him up as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will designate to you."
ג וַיַּשְׁכֵּם אַבְרָהָם בַּבֹּקֶר וַיַּחֲבֹשׁ אֶת-חֲמֹרוֹ וַיִּקַּח אֶת-שְׁנֵי נְעָרָיו אִתּוֹ וְאֵת יִצְחָק בְּנוֹ וַיְבַקַּע עֲצֵי עֹלָה וַיָּקָם וַיֵּלֶךְ אֶל-הַמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר-אָמַר-לוֹ הָאֱלֹהִים
Vayashkem Avraham baboker vayachavosh et-chamoro vayikach et-shney ne'arav ito ve'et Yitschak beno vayevaka atsey olah vayakom vayelech el-hamakom asher-amar-lo ha'Elohim.
3. Avraham got up early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took his two young men with him along with his son Yitzchak. He split the burnt offering wood, set out, and headed for the place that G-d had designated to him.
ד בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁי וַיִּשָּׂא אַבְרָהָם אֶת-עֵינָיו וַיַּרְא אֶת-הַמָּקוֹם--מֵרָחֹק
Bayom hashlishi vayisa Avraham et-einav vayar et-hamakom merachok.
4. On the third day, Avraham lifted his eyes and saw the place from afar.
ה וַיֹּאמֶר אַבְרָהָם אֶל-נְעָרָיו שְׁבוּ-לָכֶם פֹּה עִם-הַחֲמוֹר וַאֲנִי וְהַנַּעַר נֵלְכָה עַד-כֹּה וְנִשְׁתַּחֲוֶה וְנָשׁוּבָה אֲלֵיכֶם
Vayomer Avraham el-ne'arav shvu-lachem poh im-hachamor va'ani vehana'ar nelchah ad-koh venishtachaveh venashuvah aleychem.
5. Avraham said t [his young men], "Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go to that place. We will prostrate ourselves and we will return to you."
ו וַיִּקַּח אַבְרָהָם אֶת-עֲצֵי הָעֹלָה וַיָּשֶׂם עַל-יִצְחָק בְּנוֹ וַיִּקַּח בְּיָדוֹ אֶת-הָאֵשׁ וְאֶת-הַמַּאֲכֶלֶת וַיֵּלְכוּ שְׁנֵיהֶם יַחְדָּו
Vayikach Avraham et-atzey ha'olah vayashem al-Yitzchak beno vayikach beyado et-ha'esh ve'et-hama'achelet vayelchu shneihem yachdav
6. Avraham took the burnt offering wood and placed it on his son Yitzchak. In his hand he took the fire and the slaughter knife, and the two of them went together.
ז וַיֹּאמֶר יִצְחָק אֶל-אַבְרָהָם אָבִיו וַיֹּאמֶר אָבִי וַיֹּאמֶר הִנֶּנִּי בְנִי וַיֹּאמֶר הִנֵּה הָאֵשׁ וְהָעֵצִים וְאַיֵּה הַשֶּׂה לְעֹלָה
Vayomer Yitzchak el-Avraham aviv vayomer avi vayomer hineni veni vayomer hineh ha'esh veha'etzim ve'ayeh haseh le'olah.
7. Yitzchak spoke up to Avraham his father and said, "My father." [Avraham] said, "Here I am, my son." [Yitzchak] said, "Here are the fire and the wood. But where is the lamb for the burnt offering?"
ח וַיֹּאמֶר אַבְרָהָם אֱלֹהִים יִרְאֶה-לּוֹ הַשֶּׂה לְעֹלָה בְּנִי; וַיֵּלְכוּ שְׁנֵיהֶם יַחְדָּו
Vayomer Avraham Elokim yir'eh-lo haseh le'olah beni vayelchu shneihem yachdav.
8. Avraham said, "G-d will see to a lamb for a burnt offering, my son." The two of them went together.
ט וַיָּבֹאוּ אֶל-הַמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר אָמַר-לוֹ הָאֱלֹהִים וַיִּבֶן שָׁם אַבְרָהָם אֶת-הַמִּזְבֵּחַ וַיַּעֲרֹךְ אֶת-הָעֵצִים וַיַּעֲקֹד אֶת-יִצְחָק בְּנוֹ וַיָּשֶׂם אֹתוֹ עַל-הַמִּזְבֵּחַ מִמַּעַל לָעֵצִים
Vayavo'u el-hamakom asher amar-lo ha'Elokim vayiven sham Avraham et-hamizbe'ach vaya'aroch et-ha'etzim vaya'akod et-Yitzchak beno vayasem oto al-hamizbe'ach mima'al la'etzim.
9. They came to the place that G-d had designated to him, and Avraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Yitzchak and placed him on the altar on top of the wood.
י וַיִּשְׁלַח אַבְרָהָם אֶת-יָדוֹ וַיִּקַּח אֶת-הַמַּאֲכֶלֶת לִשְׁחֹט אֶת-בְּנוֹ
Vayishlach Avraham et-yado vayikach et-hama'achelet lishchot et-beno.
10. Avraham put forth his hand and took the slaughter knife to slit his son's throat.
יא וַיִּקְרָא אֵלָיו מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה מִן-הַשָּׁמַיִם וַיֹּאמֶר אַבְרָהָם אַבְרָהָם וַיֹּאמֶר הִנֵּנִי
Vayikra elav mal'ach HASHEM min-hashamayim vayomer Avraham Avraham vayomer hineni.
11. An angel of HASHEM called to him from heaven and said, "Avraham! Avraham!" [Avraham] said, "I am here."
יב וַיֹּאמֶר אַל-תִּשְׁלַח יָדְךָ אֶל-הַנַּעַר וְאַל-תַּעַשׂ לוֹ מְאוּמָה: כִּי עַתָּה יָדַעְתִּי כִּי-יְרֵא אֱלֹהִים אַתָּה וְלֹא חָשַׂכְתָּ אֶת-בִּנְךָ אֶת-יְחִידְךָ מִמֶּנִּי
Vayomer al-tishlach yadcha el-hana'ar ve'al-ta'as lo me'umah ki atah yadati ki-yere Elokim atah velo chasachta et-bincha et-yechidecha mimeni.
12. [The angel] said, "Do not put forth your hand to the lad. Do not do anything to him. For now I know that you fear G-d. You have not withheld your son, your only one, from me."
יג וַיִּשָּׂא אַבְרָהָם אֶת-עֵינָיו וַיַּרְא וְהִנֵּה-אַיִל אַחַר נֶאֱחַז בַּסְּבַךְ בְּקַרְנָיו; וַיֵּלֶךְ אַבְרָהָם וַיִּקַּח אֶת-הָאַיִל וַיַּעֲלֵהוּ לְעֹלָה תַּחַת בְּנוֹ
Vayisa Avraham et-einav vayar vehineh-ayil achar ne'echaz basvach bekarnav vayelech Avraham vayikach et-ha'ayil vaya'alehu le'olah tachat beno.
13. Avraham lifted his eyes and saw a ram after it was caught in the thicket by its horns. Avraham went and took the ram, and sacrificed it as a burnt offering in his son's place.
יד וַיִּקְרָא אַבְרָהָם שֵׁם-הַמָּקוֹם הַהוּא יְהוָה יִרְאֶה אֲשֶׁר יֵאָמֵר הַיּוֹם בְּהַר יְהוָה יֵרָאֶה
Vayikra Avraham shem-hamakom hahu HASHEM Yir'eh asher ye'amer hayom behar HASHEM yera'eh.
14. Avraham named the place "HASHEM Will See". Today it is therefore said, "On Hashem's mountain, He will be seen."
טו וַיִּקְרָא מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה אֶל-אַבְרָהָם שֵׁנִית מִן-הַשָּׁמָיִם
Vayikra mal'ach HASHEM el-Avraham shenit min-hashamayim.
15. The angel of HASHEM called to Avraham from heaven a second time.
טז וַיֹּאמֶר בִּי נִשְׁבַּעְתִּי נְאֻם-יְהוָה: כִּי יַעַן אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתָ אֶת-הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה וְלֹא חָשַׂכְתָּ אֶת-בִּנְךָ אֶת-יְחִידֶךָ
Vayomer bi nishbati ne'um-HASHEM ki ya'an asher asita et-hadavar hazeh velo chasachta et-bincha et-yechidecha.
16. and said, "I have sworn by Myself, declares HASHEM, 'That because you performed this act and did not hold back your son, your only one,
יז כִּי-בָרֵךְ אֲבָרֶכְךָ וְהַרְבָּה אַרְבֶּה אֶת-זַרְעֲךָ כְּכוֹכְבֵי הַשָּׁמַיִם וְכַחוֹל אֲשֶׁר עַל-שְׂפַת הַיָּם; וְיִרַשׁ זַרְעֲךָ אֵת שַׁעַר אֹיְבָיו
Ki-varech avarechecha veharbah arbeh et-zar'acha kechochevei hashamayim vehachol asher al-sfat hayam veyirash zar'acha et sha'ar oyvav
17. I will greatly bless you and increase your offspring like the stars of the sky and like the sand on the seashore. Your offspring shall inherit the gate of its enemies.
יח וְהִתְבָּרְכוּ בְזַרְעֲךָ כֹּל גּוֹיֵי הָאָרֶץ עֵקֶב אֲשֶׁר שָׁמַעְתָּ בְּקֹלִי
Vehitbarchu bezar'acha kol goyei ha'aretz ekev asher shamata bekoli.
18. All the nations of the earth shall bless themselves through your descendants - because you obeyed My voice.'"
יט וַיָּשָׁב אַבְרָהָם אֶל-נְעָרָיו וַיָּקֻמוּ וַיֵּלְכוּ יַחְדָּו אֶל-בְּאֵר שָׁבַע וַיֵּשֶׁב אַבְרָהָם בִּבְאֵר שָׁבַע
Vayashov Avraham el-ne'arav vayakumu vayelchu yachdav el-Be'er Shava vayeshev Avraham biVe'er Shava.
19. Avraham returned to his young men, and together they set out and went to Beer Sheva. Avraham remained in Beer Sheva.
כ וַיְהִי אַחֲרֵי הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה וַיֻּגַּד לְאַבְרָהָם לֵאמֹר: הִנֵּה יָלְדָה מִלְכָּה גַם-הִוא בָּנִים--לְנָחוֹר אָחִיךָ
Vayehi acharei hadevarim ha'eleh vayugad le-Avraham lemor hineh yaldah Milkah gam-hi banim le-Nachor achicha.
20. AFter these events it was told to Avraham, "Behold Milkah also has had children from Nachor your brother."
כא אֶת-עוּץ בְּכֹרוֹ וְאֶת-בּוּז אָחִיו וְאֶת-קְמוּאֵל אֲבִי אֲרָם
Et-Utz bechoro ve'et-Buz achiv ve'et-Kmu'el avi Aram.
21. Utz, his first born; Buz, his brother; along with Kemuel, the father of Aram,
כב וְאֶת-כֶּשֶׂד וְאֶת-חֲזוֹ וְאֶת-פִּלְדָּשׁ וְאֶת-יִדְלָף וְאֵת בְּתוּאֵל
Ve'et-Kesed ve'et-Chazo ve'et-Pildash ve'et-Yidlaf ve'et Betu'el.
22. Kesed, Chazo, Pildash, Yidlaf, and Betuel.
כג וּבְתוּאֵל יָלַד אֶת-רִבְקָה שְׁמֹנָה אֵלֶּה יָלְדָה מִלְכָּה לְנָחוֹר אֲחִי אַבְרָהָם
UVetu'el yalad et-Rivkah shmonah eleh yaldah Milkah le-Nachor achi Avraham.
23. Betuel fathered Rivkah. The above eight, Milkah bore to Avraham's brother Nachor.
כד וּפִילַגְשׁוֹ וּשְׁמָהּ רְאוּמָה וַתֵּלֶד גַּם-הִוא אֶת-טֶבַח וְאֶת-גַּחַם וְאֶת-תַּחַשׁ וְאֶת-מַעֲכָה
Ufilagsho ushmah Re'umah vateled gam-hi et-Tevach ve'et-Gacham ve'et-Tachash ve'et-Ma'achah.
24. His concubine was named Reumah. She, too, gave birth, to Tevach, Gacham, Tachash and Maachah.
