Bereishit Chapter 24

 

א וְאַבְרָהָם זָקֵן בָּא בַּיָּמִים וַיהוָה בֵּרַךְ אֶת-אַבְרָהָם בַּכֹּל

 

 

Ve'Avraham zaken ba bayamim va'HASHEM berach et-Avraham bakol.

 

 

1. Avraham was old, advanced in years; and HASHEM had blessed Avraham with everything.

 

 

ב וַיֹּאמֶר אַבְרָהָם אֶל-עַבְדּוֹ זְקַן בֵּיתוֹ הַמֹּשֵׁל בְּכָל-אֲשֶׁר-לוֹ: שִׂים-נָא יָדְךָ תַּחַת יְרֵכִי

 

 

Vayomer Avraham el-avdo zekan beito hamoshel bechol-asher-lo sim-na yadeicha tachat yerechi.

 

 

2. Avraham said to the senior servant of his household, who was in charge of all that he had, "Place your hand under my thigh.

 

 

ג וְאַשְׁבִּיעֲךָ--בַּיהוָה אֱלֹהֵי הַשָּׁמַיִם וֵאלֹהֵי הָאָרֶץ: אֲשֶׁר לֹא-תִקַּח אִשָּׁה לִבְנִי מִבְּנוֹת הַכְּנַעֲנִי אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי יוֹשֵׁב בְּקִרְבּוֹ

 

 

Ve'ashbiacha ba'HASHEM Elokei hashamayim ve'Elohei ha'aretz asher lo-tikach isha livni mibenot haKna'ani asher anochi yoshev bekirbo.

 

 

3. I will have you swear by HASHEM, G-d of heaven and G-d of earth, that you will not obtain a wife from my son from the daughters of the Kenaani, among whome I live.

 

 

ד כִּי אֶל-אַרְצִי וְאֶל-מוֹלַדְתִּי תֵּלֵךְ וְלָקַחְתָּ אִשָּׁה לִבְנִי לְיִצְחָק

 

 

Ki el-artzi ve'el-moladeti telech velakachta ishah liveni le-Yitzchak.

 

 

4. Instead, you shall go to my native land, to my birthplace, and obtain a wife for my son - for Yitzchak."

 

 

ה וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו הָעֶבֶד אוּלַי לֹא-תֹאבֶה הָאִשָּׁה לָלֶכֶת אַחֲרַי אֶל-הָאָרֶץ הַזֹּאת הֶהָשֵׁב אָשִׁיב אֶת-בִּנְךָ אֶל-הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר-יָצָאתָ מִשָּׁם

 

 

Vayomer elav ha'eved ulai lo-toveh ha'ishah lalechet acharai el-ha'aretz hazot hehashev ashiv et-bincha el-ha'aretz asher-yatzata misham.

 

 

5. The servant said to him, "What if the woman does not want to follow me to this land? Shall I bring your son back to the land from which you emigrated?"

 

 

ו וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אַבְרָהָם: הִשָּׁמֶר לְךָ פֶּן-תָּשִׁיב אֶת-בְּנִי שָׁמָּה

 

 

Vayomer elav Avraham hishamer lecha pen-tashiv et-beni shamah.

 

 

6. Avraham said to him, "Take care not to bring my son back there."

 

 

ז יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי הַשָּׁמַיִם אֲשֶׁר לְקָחַנִי מִבֵּית אָבִי וּמֵאֶרֶץ מוֹלַדְתִּי וַאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר-לִי וַאֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע-לִי לֵאמֹר לְזַרְעֲךָ אֶתֵּן אֶת-הָאָרֶץ הַזֹּאת--הוּא יִשְׁלַח מַלְאָכוֹ לְפָנֶיךָ וְלָקַחְתָּ אִשָּׁה לִבְנִי מִשָּׁם

 

 

HASHEM Elokei hashamayim asher lekachani mibeit avi ume'eretz moladeti va'asher diber-li va'asher nishba-li lemor lezar'acha eten et-ha'aretz hazot hu yishlach mal'acho lefaneicha velakachta ishah liveni misham.

 

 

7. Hashem, the G-d of heaven, who took me from my father's house and from the land of my birth, who spoke to me, and who swore to me saying, 'To your descendants I will give this land' - He will send His angel before you, and you will indeed obtain a wife for my son from there.

 

 

ח וְאִם-לֹא תֹאבֶה הָאִשָּׁה לָלֶכֶת אַחֲרֶיךָ--וְנִקִּיתָ מִשְּׁבֻעָתִי זֹאת רַק אֶת-בְּנִי לֹא תָשֵׁב שָׁמָּה

 

 

Ve-im lo toveh ha'ishah lalechet achareicha venikita mishvuati zot rak et-beni lo tashev shamah.

 

 

8. If the woman does not want to follow you, you shall be absolved of this oath to me. But do not bring my son back there."

 

 

ט וַיָּשֶׂם הָעֶבֶד אֶת-יָדוֹ תַּחַת יֶרֶךְ אַבְרָהָם אֲדֹנָיו וַיִּשָּׁבַע לוֹ עַל-הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה

 

 

Vayasem ha'eved et-yado tachat yerech Avraham adonav vayishava lo al-hadavar hazeh.

 

 

9. The servant placed his hand under his master Avraham's thigh, and made an oath to him regarding this matter.

 

 

י וַיִּקַּח הָעֶבֶד עֲשָׂרָה גְמַלִּים מִגְּמַלֵּי אֲדֹנָיו וַיֵּלֶךְ וְכָל-טוּב אֲדֹנָיו בְּיָדוֹ וַיָּקָם וַיֵּלֶךְ אֶל-אֲרַם נַהֲרַיִם--אֶל-עִיר נָחוֹר

 

 

Vayikach ha'eved asarah gemalim migmalei adonav vayelech vechol-tuv adonav beyado vayakom vayelech el-Aram Naharayim el-ir Nachor.

 

 

10. The servant took ten of his master's camels, with all the good things belonging to his master in hand. He set off and went to Aram Naharayim, to the city of Nachor.

 

 

יא וַיַּבְרֵךְ הַגְּמַלִּים מִחוּץ לָעִיר אֶל-בְּאֵר הַמָּיִם לְעֵת עֶרֶב לְעֵת צֵאת הַשֹּׁאֲבֹת

 

 

Vayavrech hagemalim michutz la'ir el-be'er hamayim le'et erev le'et tzet hasho'avot.

 

 

11. He let the camels rest on their knees outside the city beside the well in the evening when women go out to draw water.

 

 

יב וַיֹּאמַר--יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי אֲדֹנִי אַבְרָהָם הַקְרֵה-נָא לְפָנַי הַיּוֹם וַעֲשֵׂה-חֶסֶד עִם אֲדֹנִי אַבְרָהָם

 

 

Vayomar HASHEM Elokei adoni Avraham hakreh-na lefanai hayom va'aseh chesed im adoni Avraham.

 

 

12. He said, "O HASHEM, G-d of my master Avraham, be present before me today and act kindly with my master Avraham.

 

 

יג הִנֵּה אָנֹכִי נִצָּב עַל-עֵין הַמָּיִם וּבְנוֹת אַנְשֵׁי הָעִיר יֹצְאֹת לִשְׁאֹב מָיִם

 

 

Hineh anochi nitzav al-ein hamayim uvenot anshei ha'ir yotze'ot lish'ov mayim.

 

 

13. Behold, I am standing by this spring,and the daughters of the townsmen are coming out to draw water.

 

 

יד וְהָיָה הַנַּעֲרָ אֲשֶׁר אֹמַר אֵלֶיהָ הַטִּי-נָא כַדֵּךְ וְאֶשְׁתֶּה וְאָמְרָה שְׁתֵה וְגַם-גְּמַלֶּיךָ אַשְׁקֶה--אֹתָהּ הֹכַחְתָּ לְעַבְדְּךָ לְיִצְחָק וּבָהּ אֵדַע כִּי-עָשִׂיתָ חֶסֶד עִם-אֲדֹנִי

 

 

Vehayah hana'arah asher omar eleiha hati-na chadef ve'eshteh ve'amerah sheteh vegam gemaleicha ashkeh otah hochachta le'avdechah le-Yitzchak uvah eda ki-asita chesed im-adoni.

 

 

14. The girl to whom I say, 'Tip over your jug that I may drink,' and who answers, 'Drink, and I will also water your camels' - will be the one whom You have determined for your servant Yitzchak. With her I will know that You have acted kindly toward my master."

 

 

טו וַיְהִי-הוּא טֶרֶם כִּלָּה לְדַבֵּר וְהִנֵּה רִבְקָה יֹצֵאת אֲשֶׁר יֻלְּדָה לִבְתוּאֵל בֶּן-מִלְכָּה אֵשֶׁת נָחוֹר אֲחִי אַבְרָהָם וְכַדָּהּ עַל-שִׁכְמָהּ

 

 

Vayehi hu terem kilah ledaber vehineh Rivkah yotzet asher yuldah li-Vetu'el ben-Milkah eshet Nachor achi Avraham vechadah al-shichmah.

 

 

15. He had not yet finished speaking, and suddenly Rivkah came out. She had been born to Betu'el, the son of Milkah, the wife of Avraham's brother Nachor. Her jug was on her shoulder.

 

 

טז וְהַנַּעֲרָ טֹבַת מַרְאֶה מְאֹד--בְּתוּלָה וְאִישׁ לֹא יְדָעָהּ וַתֵּרֶד הָעַיְנָה וַתְּמַלֵּא כַדָּהּ וַתָּעַל

 

 

Vehana'arah tovat mar'eh me'od betulah ve'ish lo yeda'ah vatered ha'aynah vatemale chadah vata'al.

 

 

16. The girl was extremely good looking - a virgin - no man had known her. The girl went down, filled her jug, and came up again.

 

 

יז וַיָּרָץ הָעֶבֶד לִקְרָאתָהּ וַיֹּאמֶר הַגְמִיאִינִי נָא מְעַט-מַיִם מִכַּדֵּךְ

 

 

Vayarotz ha'eved likratah vayomer hagmi'ini na me'at-mayim mikadech.

 

 

17. The servant ran toward her and said, "Please, let me sip a little water from your jug."

 

 

יח וַתֹּאמֶר שְׁתֵה אֲדֹנִי וַתְּמַהֵר וַתֹּרֶד כַּדָּהּ עַל-יָדָהּ--וַתַּשְׁקֵהוּ

 

 

Vatomer sheteh adoni vatemaher vatored kadah al-yadah vatashkehu.

 

 

18. She said, "Drink my master," and she quickly lowered her jug to her hand and let him drink.

 

 

יט וַתְּכַל לְהַשְׁקֹתוֹ וַתֹּאמֶר גַּם לִגְמַלֶּיךָ אֶשְׁאָב עַד אִם-כִּלּוּ לִשְׁתֹּת

 

 

Vatechal lehashkoto vatomer gam ligmaleicha esh'av ad im-kilu lishtot.

 

 

19. When he had finished drinking, she said, "I will also draw water for your camels, until they have drunk their fill."

 

 

כ וַתְּמַהֵר וַתְּעַר כַּדָּהּ אֶל-הַשֹּׁקֶת וַתָּרָץ עוֹד אֶל-הַבְּאֵר לִשְׁאֹב וַתִּשְׁאַב לְכָל-גְּמַלָּיו

 

 

Vatemaher vate'ar kadah el-hashoket vataratz od el-habe'er lish'ov vatish'av lechol-gemalav.

 

 

20. She quickly emptied her jug into the trough and ran to the well again to draw water. She thus drew water for all his camels.

 

 

כא וְהָאִישׁ מִשְׁתָּאֵה לָהּ מַחֲרִישׁ--לָדַעַת הַהִצְלִיחַ יְהוָה דַּרְכּוֹ אִם-לֹא

 

 

Veha'ish mishta'eh lah macharish lada'at hahitzliach HASHEM darko im-lo.

 

 

21. The man gaped at her, remaining silent, wondering whether or not HASHEM had made his journey successful.

 

 

כב וַיְהִי כַּאֲשֶׁר כִּלּוּ הַגְּמַלִּים לִשְׁתּוֹת וַיִּקַּח הָאִישׁ נֶזֶם זָהָב בֶּקַע מִשְׁקָלוֹ--וּשְׁנֵי צְמִידִים עַל-יָדֶיהָ עֲשָׂרָה זָהָב מִשְׁקָלָם

 

 

Vayehi ka'asher kilu hagemalim lishtot vayikach ha'ish nezem zahav beka mishkalo usneh tzmidim al-yadeiha asarah-zahav mishkalam.

 

 

22. When the camels had finished drinking, the man took a gold nose ring weighing half a shekel and two bracelets, weighing ten gold shekels, for her arms.

 

 

כג וַיֹּאמֶר בַּת-מִי אַתְּ הַגִּידִי נָא לִי הֲיֵשׁ בֵּית-אָבִיךְ מָקוֹם לָנוּ לָלִין

 

 

Vayomer bat-mi at hagidi na li hayesh beit-avich makom lanu lalin.

 

 

23. He said, "Whose daughter are you? Please tell me if your father's house has a place for us to spend the night."

 

 

כד וַתֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו בַּת-בְּתוּאֵל אָנֹכִי--בֶּן-מִלְכָּה אֲשֶׁר יָלְדָה לְנָחוֹר

 

 

Vatomer elav bat-Betu'el anochi ben-Milkah asher yaldah le-Nachor.

 

 

24. She said to him, "I am the daughter of Betu'el, son of Milkah, whom she bore to Nachor."

 

 

כה וַתֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו גַּם-תֶּבֶן גַּם-מִסְפּוֹא רַב עִמָּנוּ--גַּם-מָקוֹם לָלוּן

 

 

Vatomer elav gam-teven gam-mispo rav imanu gam-makom lalun.

 

 

25. She said to him, "We have plenty of straw and fodder, as well as a place to spend the night."

 

 

כו וַיִּקֹּד הָאִישׁ וַיִּשְׁתַּחוּ לַיהוָה

 

 

Vayikod ha'ish vayishtachu l'HASHEM.

 

 

26. The man bowed low and prostrated himself to HASHEM.

 

 

כז וַיֹּאמֶר בָּרוּךְ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי אֲדֹנִי אַבְרָהָם אֲשֶׁר לֹא-עָזַב חַסְדּוֹ וַאֲמִתּוֹ מֵעִם אֲדֹנִי אָנֹכִי בַּדֶּרֶךְ נָחַנִי יְהוָה בֵּית אֲחֵי אֲדֹנִי

 

 

Vayomer baruch HASHEM Elokei adoni Avraham asher lo-azav chasdo va'amito me'im adoni anochi baderech nachani HASHEM beit achei adoni.

 

 

27. He said, "Blessed be HASHEM, G-d of my master Avraham, who has not abandoned His kindness and truth toward my master. Here I am still on the road, and HASHEM has led me to the house of my master's brothers."

 

 

כח וַתָּרָץ הַנַּעֲרָ וַתַּגֵּד לְבֵית אִמָּהּ--כַּדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה

 

 

Vatarotz hana'arah vataged leveit imah kadevarim ha'eleh.

 

 

28. The girl ran and told her mother's household approximately what had happened.

 

 

כט וּלְרִבְקָה אָח וּשְׁמוֹ לָבָן וַיָּרָץ לָבָן אֶל-הָאִישׁ הַחוּצָה אֶל-הָעָיִן

 

 

Ule-Rivkah ach ushemo Lavan vayarotz Lavan el-ha'ish hachutzah el-ha'ayin.

 

 

29. Rivkah had a brother whose name was Lavan. Lavan ran outside to the man, to the well.

 

 

ל וַיְהִי כִּרְאֹת אֶת-הַנֶּזֶם וְאֶת-הַצְּמִדִים עַל-יְדֵי אֲחֹתוֹ וּכְשָׁמְעוֹ אֶת-דִּבְרֵי רִבְקָה אֲחֹתוֹ לֵאמֹר כֹּה-דִבֶּר אֵלַי הָאִישׁ וַיָּבֹא אֶל-הָאִישׁ וְהִנֵּה עֹמֵד עַל-הַגְּמַלִּים עַל-הָעָיִן

 

 

Vayehi kir'ot et-hanezem ve'et hatzmidim al-yedei achoto ucheshome'o et-diverei Rivekah achoto lemor koh-diber elai ha'ish vayavo el-ha'ish vehineh omed al-hagmalim al-ha'ayin.

 

 

30. He had seen the nose ring and the bracelets on his sister's hands, and had heard his sister Rivkah's words describing what the man had said to her. He came to the man, who was still standing beside the camels near the well.

 

 

לא וַיֹּאמֶר בּוֹא בְּרוּךְ יְהוָה לָמָּה תַעֲמֹד בַּחוּץ וְאָנֹכִי פִּנִּיתִי הַבַּיִת וּמָקוֹם לַגְּמַלִּים

 

 

Vayomer bo beruch HASHEM lamah ta'amod bachutz ve'anochi piniti habayit umakom lagmalim.

 

 

31. [Lavan] said, "Come, O blessed one of HASHEM. Why are you standing outside. I have cleaned out the house and a place for the camels."

 

 

לב וַיָּבֹא הָאִישׁ הַבַּיְתָה וַיְפַתַּח הַגְּמַלִּים וַיִּתֵּן תֶּבֶן וּמִסְפּוֹא לַגְּמַלִּים וּמַיִם לִרְחֹץ רַגְלָיו וְרַגְלֵי הָאֲנָשִׁים אֲשֶׁר אִתּוֹ

 

 

Vayavo ha'ish habaytah vayefatach hagemalim vayiten teven umispo lagemalim umayim lirchotz raglav veraglei ha'anashim asher ito.

 

 

32. The man came into the house and unmuzzled the camels. [Lavan] gave the camels straw and fodder, as well as water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him.

 

 

לג ויישם (וַיּוּשַׂם) לְפָנָיו לֶאֱכֹל וַיֹּאמֶר לֹא אֹכַל עַד אִם-דִּבַּרְתִּי דְּבָרָי וַיֹּאמֶר דַּבֵּר

 

 

Vayusam lefanav le'echol vayomer lo ochal ad im-dibarti devarai vayomer daber.

 

 

33. Food was set before him to eat but he said, "I will not eat until I have spoken my piece." [The host] said, "Speak."

 

 

לד וַיֹּאמַר: עֶבֶד אַבְרָהָם אָנֹכִי

 

 

Vayomar eved Avraham anochi.

 

 

34. He said, "I am Avraham's servant."

 

 

לה וַיהוָה בֵּרַךְ אֶת-אֲדֹנִי מְאֹד--וַיִּגְדָּל וַיִּתֶּן-לוֹ צֹאן וּבָקָר וְכֶסֶף וְזָהָב וַעֲבָדִם וּשְׁפָחֹת וּגְמַלִּים וַחֲמֹרִים

 

 

V'HASHEM berach et-adoni me'od vayigdal vayiten-lo tzon uvakar vechesef vezahav va'avadim ushfachot ugmalim vachamorim.

 

 

35. HASHEM blessed my master very much and he prospered, [G-d] gave him sheep, cattle, silver, gold, male and female slaves, camels and donkeys.

 

 

לו וַתֵּלֶד שָׂרָה אֵשֶׁת אֲדֹנִי בֵן לַאדֹנִי אַחֲרֵי זִקְנָתָהּ וַיִּתֶּן-לוֹ אֶת-כָּל-אֲשֶׁר-לוֹ

 

 

Vateled Sarah eshet adoni ven la'adoni acharei ziknatah vayiten-lo et-kol-asher-lo.

 

 

36. Sarah, my master's wife, gave birth to my master's son after she had grown old, and [my master] gave him all that he had.

 

 

לז וַיַּשְׁבִּעֵנִי אֲדֹנִי לֵאמֹר: לֹא-תִקַּח אִשָּׁה לִבְנִי מִבְּנוֹת הַכְּנַעֲנִי אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי יֹשֵׁב בְּאַרְצוֹ

 

 

Vayashbi'eini adoni lemor lo-tikach ishah livni mibenot haKna'ani asher anochi yoshev be'artzo.

 

 

37. My master made me take an oath, saying, 'Do not obtain a wife for my son from the daughters of the Kenaani, in whose land I live.

 

 

לח אִם-לֹא אֶל-בֵּית-אָבִי תֵּלֵךְ וְאֶל-מִשְׁפַּחְתִּי וְלָקַחְתָּ אִשָּׁה לִבְנִי

 

 

Im-lo el-beit-avi telech ve'el-mishpachti velakachta ishah liveni.

 

 

38. Instead, you must go to my father's house and to my family, and you shall obtain a wife for my son."

 

 

לט וָאֹמַר אֶל-אֲדֹנִי: אֻלַי לֹא-תֵלֵךְ הָאִשָּׁה אַחֲרָי

 

 

Va'omar el-adoni ulai lo-telech ha'ishah acharai.

 

 

39. I said to my master, 'What if the woman will not follow me?'

 

 

מ וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָי: יְהוָה אֲשֶׁר-הִתְהַלַּכְתִּי לְפָנָיו יִשְׁלַח מַלְאָכוֹ אִתָּךְ וְהִצְלִיחַ דַּרְכֶּךָ וְלָקַחְתָּ אִשָּׁה לִבְנִי מִמִּשְׁפַּחְתִּי וּמִבֵּית אָבִי

 

 

Vayomer elai HASHEM asher-hithalachti lefanav yishlach mal'acho itach vehitzliach darkecha velakachta ishah livni mimishpachti umibeit-avi.

 

 

40. He said to me, 'HASHEM, before whom I have walked, will send His angel with you and make your journey succesful You will be able to obtain a wife for my son from my family and from my father's house.

 

 

מא אָז תִּנָּקֶה מֵאָלָתִי כִּי תָבוֹא אֶל-מִשְׁפַּחְתִּי וְאִם-לֹא יִתְּנוּ לָךְ וְהָיִיתָ נָקִי מֵאָלָתִי

 

 

Az tinake me'alati ki tavo el-mishpachti ve'im lo yitnu lach vehayita naki me'alati.

 

 

41. Then you will be absolved of this oath to me. When you come to my family, if they do not give her to you, you will be releasd from my oath.'

 

 

מב וָאָבֹא הַיּוֹם אֶל-הָעָיִן וָאֹמַר יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי אֲדֹנִי אַבְרָהָם אִם-יֶשְׁךָ-נָּא מַצְלִיחַ דַּרְכִּי אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי הֹלֵךְ עָלֶיהָ

 

 

Va'avo hayom el-ha'ayin va'omar HASHEM Elokei adoni Avraham im-yescha-na matzliach darki asher anochi holech aleiha.

 

 

42. Today I came to the well, and I said, 'O HASHEM, G-d of my master Avraham, if You will, make the hourney upon which I go successful.

 

 

מג הִנֵּה אָנֹכִי נִצָּב עַל-עֵין הַמָּיִם וְהָיָה הָעַלְמָה הַיֹּצֵאת לִשְׁאֹב וְאָמַרְתִּי אֵלֶיהָ הַשְׁקִינִי-נָא מְעַט-מַיִם מִכַּדֵּךְ

 

 

Hineh anochi nitzav al-ein hamayim vehayah ha'almah hayotzet lish'ov ve'amarti eleiha hashkini-na me'at-mayim mikadech.

 

 

43. Behold, I am standing beside the town well. When a girl comes out to draw water, I will say to her, 'Let me drink some water from your jug.'

 

 

מד וְאָמְרָה אֵלַי גַּם-אַתָּה שְׁתֵה וְגַם לִגְמַלֶּיךָ אֶשְׁאָב--הִוא הָאִשָּׁה אֲשֶׁר-הֹכִיחַ יְהוָה לְבֶן-אֲדֹנִי

 

 

Ve'amrah elai gam-atah sheteh vegam-ligmaleicha esh'av hi ha'ishah asher hochiach HASHEM leven-adoni.

 

 

44. If she said to me, 'You may also drink, and I will draw water for your camels too,' then she is the wife whom HASHEM has determined for my master's son.'

 

 

מה אֲנִי טֶרֶם אֲכַלֶּה לְדַבֵּר אֶל-לִבִּי וְהִנֵּה רִבְקָה יֹצֵאת וְכַדָּהּ עַל-שִׁכְמָהּ וַתֵּרֶד הָעַיְנָה וַתִּשְׁאָב וָאֹמַר אֵלֶיהָ הַשְׁקִינִי נָא

 

 

Ani terem achaleh ledaber el-libi vehineh Rivkah yotzet vechadah al-shichmah vatered ha'ayenah vatish'av va'omar eleiha haskini na.

 

 

45. I had not yet finished speaking to myself when Rivkah suddenly came out, carrying her jug on her shoulder. She went down to the well and drew water, and I aid to her, 'Please give me a drink.'

 

 

מו וַתְּמַהֵר, וַתּוֹרֶד כַּדָּהּ מֵעָלֶיהָ וַתֹּאמֶר שְׁתֵה וְגַם-גְּמַלֶּיךָ אַשְׁקֶה וָאֵשְׁתְּ וְגַם הַגְּמַלִּים הִשְׁקָתָה

 

 

Vatemaher vatored kadah me'aleiha vatomer sheteh vegam-gemaleicha ashkeh va'esht vegam hagemalim hishkatah.

 

 

46. She quickly lowered her jug and said, 'Drink! I will also water your camels.' I drank and she watered the camels too.

 

 

מז וָאֶשְׁאַל אֹתָהּ וָאֹמַר בַּת-מִי אַתְּ וַתֹּאמֶר בַּת-בְּתוּאֵל בֶּן-נָחוֹר אֲשֶׁר יָלְדָה-לּוֹ מִלְכָּה וָאָשִׂם הַנֶּזֶם עַל-אַפָּהּ וְהַצְּמִידִים עַל-יָדֶיהָ

 

 

Va'esh'al otah va'omar bat-mi at vatomer bat-Betu'el ben-Nachor asher yaldah-lo Milkah va'asim hanezem al-apah vehatzmidim al-yadeiha.

 

 

47. I questioned her saying, 'Whose daughter are you?' and she replied, 'I am a daughter of Betuel son of Nachor, whom Milkah bore him.' I placed a nose ring on her nose, and bracelets on her hands.

 

 

מח וָאֶקֹּד וָאֶשְׁתַּחֲוֶה לַיהוָה וָאֲבָרֵךְ אֶת-יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי אֲדֹנִי אַבְרָהָם אֲשֶׁר הִנְחַנִי בְּדֶרֶךְ אֱמֶת לָקַחַת אֶת-בַּת-אֲחִי אֲדֹנִי לִבְנוֹ

 

 

Va'ekod va'eshtachaveh la'HASHEM va'avarech et-HASHEM Elokei adoni Avraham asher hinchani bederech emet lakachat et-bat-achi adoni livno.

 

 

48. I bowed low and prostrated myself to HASHEM, and I blessed HASHEM, G-d of my master Avraham, who led me on a true path to obtain a daughter of my master's brother for his son.

 

 

מט וְעַתָּה אִם-יֶשְׁכֶם עֹשִׂים חֶסֶד וֶאֱמֶת אֶת-אֲדֹנִי--הַגִּידוּ לִי וְאִם-לֹא--הַגִּידוּ לִי וְאֶפְנֶה עַל-יָמִין אוֹ עַל-שְׂמֹאל

 

 

Ve'atah im-yeshchem osim chesed ve'emet et-adoni hagidu li ve'im-lo hagidu li ve'efneh al-yamin o al-smol.

 

 

49. Now if you mean to deal with kindness and truth toward my master, tell me. If not, tell me, and I will turn to the right or the left."

 

 

נ וַיַּעַן לָבָן וּבְתוּאֵל וַיֹּאמְרוּ מֵיְהוָה יָצָא הַדָּבָר לֹא נוּכַל דַּבֵּר אֵלֶיךָ רַע אוֹ-טוֹב

 

 

Vaya'an Lavan uVetu'el vayomeru me'HASHEM yatza hadavar lo nuchal daber eleicha ra o-tov.

 

 

50. Lavan and Betuel answered and said, "The word is from HASHEM! We cannot say anything to you, bad or good.

 

 

נא הִנֵּה-רִבְקָה לְפָנֶיךָ קַח וָלֵךְ וּתְהִי אִשָּׁה לְבֶן-אֲדֹנֶיךָ כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר יְהוָה

 

 

Hineh-Rivkah lefaneicha kach valech utehi ishah leven-adoneicha ka'asher diber HASHEM.

 

 

51. Here, Rivkah is in front of you. Take her and go. Let her be a wife to your master's son as HASHEM has spoken."

 

 

נב וַיְהִי כַּאֲשֶׁר שָׁמַע עֶבֶד אַבְרָהָם אֶת-דִּבְרֵיהֶם וַיִּשְׁתַּחוּ אַרְצָה לַיהוָה

 

 

Vayehi ka'asher shama eved Avraham et-divreihem vayishtachu artza la'HASHEM.

 

 

52. When Avraham's servant heard their words, he prostrated himself on the ground to HASHEM.

 

 

נג וַיּוֹצֵא הָעֶבֶד כְּלֵי-כֶסֶף וּכְלֵי זָהָב וּבְגָדִים וַיִּתֵּן לְרִבְקָה וּמִגְדָּנֹת--נָתַן לְאָחִיהָ וּלְאִמָּהּ

 

 

Vayotze ha'eved klei-chesef uchlei zahav uvegadim vayiten le-Rivkah umigdanot natan le'achiha ule'imah.

 

 

53. The servant took out gold and silver objects and graments and he gave them to Rivkah. To her brother and mother, he gave fine fruit.

 

 

נד וַיֹּאכְלוּ וַיִּשְׁתּוּ הוּא וְהָאֲנָשִׁים אֲשֶׁר-עִמּוֹ--וַיָּלִינוּ וַיָּקוּמוּ בַבֹּקֶר וַיֹּאמֶר שַׁלְּחֻנִי לַאדֹנִי

 

 

Vayochlu vayishtu hu veha'anashim asher-imo vayalinu vayakumu vaboker vayomer shalchuni l'adoni.

 

 

54. He and the men with him ate, drank, and spent the night. When they got up in the morning, he said, "Send me to my master."

 

 

נה וַיֹּאמֶר אָחִיהָ וְאִמָּהּ תֵּשֵׁב הַנַּעֲרָ אִתָּנוּ יָמִים אוֹ עָשׂוֹר אַחַר תֵּלֵךְ

 

 

Vayomer achiha ve'imah teshev hana'arah itanu yamim o asor achar telech.

 

 

55. Her brother and mother said, "Let the girl remain with us for some days or ten, and then she can go."

 

 

נו וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם אַל-תְּאַחֲרוּ אֹתִי וַיהוָה הִצְלִיחַ דַּרְכִּי שַׁלְּחוּנִי וְאֵלְכָה לַאדֹנִי

 

 

Vayomer alehem al-te'acharu oti va'HASHEM hitzliach darki shalchuni ve'elechah l'adoni.

 

 

56. He said to them, "Do not delay me, because HASHEM has made my journey successful. Let me leave and I will go to my master."

 

 

נז וַיֹּאמְרוּ נִקְרָא לַנַּעֲרָ וְנִשְׁאֲלָה אֶת-פִּיהָ

 

 

Vayomeru nikra lana'arah venish'alah et-piha.

 

 

57. They said, "Let us call the girl and ask her personally."

 

 

נח וַיִּקְרְאוּ לְרִבְקָה וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלֶיהָ הֲתֵלְכִי עִם-הָאִישׁ הַזֶּה וַתֹּאמֶר אֵלֵךְ

 

 

Vayikre'u le-Rivkah vayomeru eleiha hatelechi im-ha'ish hazeh vatomer elech.

 

 

58. They summoned Rivkah and said to her, "Will you go with this man?" She said, "I will go."

 

 

נט וַיְשַׁלְּחוּ אֶת-רִבְקָה אֲחֹתָם וְאֶת-מֵנִקְתָּהּ וְאֶת-עֶבֶד אַבְרָהָם וְאֶת-אֲנָשָׁיו

 

 

Vayeshalechu et-Rivkah achotam ve'et-meniktah ve'et eved Avraham ve'et anashav.

 

 

59. They bid farewell to their sister Rivkah and her nurse, along with Avraham's servant and his men.

 

 

ס וַיְבָרְכוּ אֶת-רִבְקָה וַיֹּאמְרוּ לָהּ--אֲחֹתֵנוּ אַתְּ הֲיִי לְאַלְפֵי רְבָבָה וְיִירַשׁ זַרְעֵךְ אֵת שַׁעַר שֹׂנְאָיו

 

 

Vayevarchu et-Rivkah vayomru lah achotenu at chai le'alfei revavah veyirash zar'ech et sha'ar son'av.

 

 

60. They blessed Rivkah and said to her, "Our sister, grow into thousands of myriads. May your offspring inherit the gate of his foes."

 

 

סא וַתָּקָם רִבְקָה וְנַעֲרֹתֶיהָ וַתִּרְכַּבְנָה עַל-הַגְּמַלִּים וַתֵּלַכְנָה אַחֲרֵי הָאִישׁ וַיִּקַּח הָעֶבֶד אֶת-רִבְקָה וַיֵּלַךְ

 

 

Vatakom Rivkah vena'aroteiha vatirkavnah al-hagemalim vatelachnah acharei ha'ish vayikach ha'eved et-Rivkah vayelach.

 

 

61. Rivkah set off with her girls, and they rode on the camels. They proceeded afer the man. The servant took Rivkah and he went.

 

 

סב וְיִצְחָק בָּא מִבּוֹא בְּאֵר לַחַי רֹאִי וְהוּא יוֹשֵׁב בְּאֶרֶץ הַנֶּגֶב

 

 

VeYitzchak ba mibo Be'er Lachai Ro'i vehu yoshev be'eretz haNegev.

 

 

62. Yitzchak was on his way, coming from Beer Lachai Roi. He was living in the area of the Negev.

 

 

סג וַיֵּצֵא יִצְחָק לָשׂוּחַ בַּשָּׂדֶה לִפְנוֹת עָרֶב וַיִּשָּׂא עֵינָיו וַיַּרְא וְהִנֵּה גְמַלִּים בָּאִים

 

 

Vayetze Yitzchak lasuach basadeh lifnot arev vayisa einav vayar vehineh gemalim ba'im.

 

 

63. Yitzchak went out to meditate in the field toward evening. He raised his eyes and suddenly saw camels coming.

 

 

סד וַתִּשָּׂא רִבְקָה אֶת-עֵינֶיהָ וַתֵּרֶא אֶת-יִצְחָק וַתִּפֹּל מֵעַל הַגָּמָל

 

 

Vatisa Rivkah et-eineiha vatere et-Yitzchak vatipol me'al hagamal.

 

 

64. Rivkah lifted her eyes and saw Yitzchak. She fell from the camel.

 

 

סה וַתֹּאמֶר אֶל-הָעֶבֶד מִי-הָאִישׁ הַלָּזֶה הַהֹלֵךְ בַּשָּׂדֶה לִקְרָאתֵנוּ וַיֹּאמֶר הָעֶבֶד הוּא אֲדֹנִי וַתִּקַּח הַצָּעִיף וַתִּתְכָּס

 

 

Vatomer el-ha'eved mi-ha'ish halazeh haholech basadeh likratenu vayomer ha'eved hu adoni vatikach hatza'if vatitkas.

 

 

65. She said to the servant, "Who is that man going toward us in the field." The servant said, "That is my master." She took the veil and covered herself.

 

 

סו וַיְסַפֵּר הָעֶבֶד לְיִצְחָק אֵת כָּל-הַדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה

 

 

Vayesaper ha'eved le-Yitzchak et kol-hadvarim asher asah.

 

 

66. The servant told Yitzchak all the things he had done.

 

 

סז וַיְבִאֶהָ יִצְחָק הָאֹהֱלָה שָׂרָה אִמּוֹ וַיִּקַּח אֶת-רִבְקָה וַתְּהִי-לוֹ לְאִשָּׁה וַיֶּאֱהָבֶהָ וַיִּנָּחֵם יִצְחָק אַחֲרֵי אִמּוֹ

 

 

Vayevi'eha Yitzchak ha'ohelah Sarah imo vayikach et-Rivkah vatehi-lo le'ishah vaye'ehaveha vayinachem Yitzchak acharei imo.

 

 

67. Yitzchak brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah. He married Rivkah and she became his wife, and he loved her. Yitzchak thus found consolation after his mother's death.
