Bereishit Chapter 3

Vehanachash hayah arum mikol chayat hasadeh asher asah HASHEM Elokim vayomer el-ha'ishah af ki-amar Elokim lo tochelu mikol etz hagan.

1. The serpent was the sliest of all the beasts of the field which HASHEM G-d made. And he said to the woman, "Did G-d even say that you should not eat from all the trees of the Garden?"

ב וַתֹּאמֶר הָאִשָּׁה אֶל-הַנָּחָשׁ מִפְּרִי עֵץ-הַגָּן נֹאכֵל

Vatomer ha'ishah el-hanachash mipri etz-hagan nochel.

2. The woman said to the serpent, "From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat.

ג וּמִפְּרִי הָעֵץ אֲשֶׁר בְּתוֹךְ-הַגָּן--אָמַר אֱלֹהִים לֹא תֹאכְלוּ מִמֶּנּוּ וְלֹא תִגְּעוּ בּוֹ פֶּן-תְּמֻתוּן

Umiperi ha'etz asher betoch-hagan amar Elokim lo tochelu mimenu velo tige'u bo pen temutun.

3. But of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, G-d said, 'You shall not eat from it - you shall not touch it - lest you die.'"

ד וַיֹּאמֶר הַנָּחָשׁ אֶל-הָאִשָּׁה לֹא-מוֹת תְּמֻתוּן

Vayomer hanachash el-ha'ishah lo mot temutun.

4. The serpent said to the woman, "You certainly will not die.

ה כִּי יֹדֵעַ אֱלֹהִים כִּי בְּיוֹם אֲכָלְכֶם מִמֶּנּוּ וְנִפְקְחוּ עֵינֵיכֶם וִהְיִיתֶם כֵּאלֹהִים יֹדְעֵי טוֹב וָרָע

Ki yodea Elokim ki beyom acholchem mimenu venifkechu eineichem viheyitem ke'Elokim yod'ei tov vara.

5. For G-d knows that on the day you eat from it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like G-d, knowing good and evil.

ו וַתֵּרֶא הָאִשָּׁה כִּי טוֹב הָעֵץ לְמַאֲכָל וְכִי תַאֲוָה-הוּא לָעֵינַיִם וְנֶחְמָד הָעֵץ לְהַשְׂכִּיל וַתִּקַּח מִפִּרְיוֹ וַתֹּאכַל וַתִּתֵּן גַּם-לְאִישָׁהּ עִמָּהּ וַיֹּאכַל

Vatere ha'ishah ki tov ha'etz lema'achal vechi ta'avah-hu la'einayim venechmad ha'etz lehaskil vatikach mipiryo vatochal vatiten gam-le'ishah imah vayochal.

6. The woman saw that the tree was good to eat and desirable to the eyes, and that the tree was attractive as a means of wisdom. She took of its fruit and she ate, and she also gave it to her husband with her, and he ate.

ז וַתִּפָּקַחְנָה עֵינֵי שְׁנֵיהֶם וַיֵּדְעוּ כִּי עֵירֻמִּם הֵם וַיִּתְפְּרוּ עֲלֵה תְאֵנָה וַיַּעֲשׂוּ לָהֶם חֲגֹרֹת

Vatipakachnah einei shneihem vayede'u ki eirumim hem vayitperu aleh te'enah vaya'asu lahem chagorot.

7. The eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized that they were naked. They sewed together fig leaves, and they made for themselves loincloths.

ח וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ אֶת-קוֹל יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים מִתְהַלֵּךְ בַּגָּן--לְרוּחַ הַיּוֹם וַיִּתְחַבֵּא הָאָדָם וְאִשְׁתּוֹ מִפְּנֵי יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים בְּתוֹךְ עֵץ הַגָּן

Vayishme'u et-kol HASHEM Elokim mithalech bagan le-ruach hayom vayitchabe ha'adam ve'ishto mipenei HASHEM Elokim betoch etz hagan.

8. They heard the voice of HASHEM G-d walking in the garden as the wind of the day. The man and his wife hid themselves from HASHEM G-d among the trees of the garden.

ט וַיִּקְרָא יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים אֶל-הָאָדָם וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ אַיֶּכָּה

Vayikra HASHEM Elokim el-ha'adam vayomer lo ayeka.

9. HASHEM G-d called to the man, and He said, "Where are you?"

י וַיֹּאמֶר אֶת-קֹלְךָ שָׁמַעְתִּי בַּגָּן וָאִירָא כִּי-עֵירֹם אָנֹכִי וָאֵחָבֵא

Vayomer et-kolecha shamati bagan va'ira ki-eyrom anochi va'echave.

10. He said, "I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid."

יא וַיֹּאמֶר--מִי הִגִּיד לְךָ כִּי עֵירֹם אָתָּה הֲמִן-הָעֵץ אֲשֶׁר צִוִּיתִיךָ לְבִלְתִּי אֲכָל-מִמֶּנּוּ--אָכָלְתָּ

Vayomer mi higid lecha ki eyrom atah hamin-ha'etz asher tziviticha levilti achol-mimenu achalta.

11. [G-d] said, "Who told you that you were naked? Did you then eat from the tree that I commanded you not to eat of it?"

יב וַיֹּאמֶר, הָאָדָם: הָאִשָּׁה אֲשֶׁר נָתַתָּה עִמָּדִי, הִוא נָתְנָה-לִּי מִן-הָעֵץ וָאֹכֵל

Vayomer ha'adam ha'ishah asher natatah imadi hi natnah-li min-ha'etz va'ochel.

12. The man said, "The woman that You gave to be with me - she gave me from the tree and I ate."

יג וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים לָאִשָּׁה מַה-זֹּאת עָשִׂית וַתֹּאמֶר הָאִשָּׁה הַנָּחָשׁ הִשִּׁיאַנִי וָאֹכֵל

Vayomer HASHEM Elokim la'ishah mah-zot asit vatomer ha'ishah hanachash hishi'ani va'ochel.

13. HASHEM G-d said to the woman, "What is this that you have done?" She said, "The serpent seduced me and I ate."

יד וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים אֶל-הַנָּחָשׁ כִּי עָשִׂיתָ זֹּאת אָרוּר אַתָּה מִכָּל-הַבְּהֵמָה וּמִכֹּל חַיַּת הַשָּׂדֶה עַל-גְּחֹנְךָ תֵלֵךְ וְעָפָר תֹּאכַל כָּל-יְמֵי חַיֶּיךָ

Vayomer HASHEM Elokim el-hanachash ki asita zot arur atah mikol-habehemah umikol chayat hasadeh al-gechonecha telech ve'afar tochal kol-yemei chayecha.

14. HASHEM G-d said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, cursed are you above all the cattle and above all the wild beasts of the field. On your belly you shall crawl, and dust you shall eat, all the days of your life.

טו וְאֵיבָה אָשִׁית בֵּינְךָ וּבֵין הָאִשָּׁה וּבֵין זַרְעֲךָ וּבֵין זַרְעָהּ הוּא יְשׁוּפְךָ רֹאשׁ וְאַתָּה תְּשׁוּפֶנּוּ עָקֵב

Ve'eiva asit beinecha uvein ha'ishah uvein zar'achah uvein zar'ah hu yeshufecha rosh ve'ata teshufenu akev.

15. I will plant enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He shall strike you in the head, and you shall strike him in the heel."

טז אֶל-הָאִשָּׁה אָמַר הַרְבָּה אַרְבֶּה עִצְּבוֹנֵךְ וְהֵרֹנֵךְ--בְּעֶצֶב תֵּלְדִי בָנִים; וְאֶל-אִישֵׁךְ תְּשׁוּקָתֵךְ וְהוּא יִמְשָׁל-בָּךְ

El-ha'ishah amar harbah arbeh yitzbonech veheronech be'etzev teldi vanim ve'el ishech teshukatech vehu yimshol-bach.

16. To the woman He said, "I will greatly increase your anguish and your pregnancy. In anguish you shall give birth to children. To your husband shall be your passion, and he will dominate you."

יז וּלְאָדָם אָמַר כִּי-שָׁמַעְתָּ לְקוֹל אִשְׁתֶּךָ וַתֹּאכַל מִן-הָעֵץ אֲשֶׁר צִוִּיתִיךָ לֵאמֹר לֹא תֹאכַל מִמֶּנּוּ--אֲרוּרָה הָאֲדָמָה בַּעֲבוּרֶךָ בְּעִצָּבוֹן תֹּאכְלֶנָּה כֹּל יְמֵי חַיֶּיךָ

Ule-Adam amar ki shamata lekol ishtecha vatochal min-ha'etz asher tziviticha lemor lo tochal mimenu arurah ha'adamah ba'avurecha be'itzavon tochelenah kol yemey chayecha.

17. To Adam He said, "Because you listened to your wife, and ate from the tree which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat from it,' cursed shall be the soil for your sake - in anguish you shall eat of it all the days of your life.

יח וְקוֹץ וְדַרְדַּר תַּצְמִיחַ לָךְ וְאָכַלְתָּ אֶת-עֵשֶׂב הַשָּׂדֶה

Vekotz vedardar tatzmiach lach ve'achalta et-esev hasadeh.

18. Thorns and thistles shall it grow for you, and you shall eat the grass of the field.

יט בְּזֵעַת אַפֶּיךָ תֹּאכַל לֶחֶם עַד שׁוּבְךָ אֶל-הָאֲדָמָה כִּי מִמֶּנָּה לֻקָּחְתָּ כִּי-עָפָר אַתָּה וְאֶל-עָפָר תָּשׁוּב

Beze'at apecha tochal lechem ad shuvecha el-ha'adamah ki mimenah lukachta ki-afar atah ve'el-afar tashuv.

19. By the sweat of your brow you shall eat bread - until you return to the ground, for from it were you taken. For you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

כ וַיִּקְרָא הָאָדָם שֵׁם אִשְׁתּוֹ חַוָּה כִּי הִוא הָיְתָה אֵם כָּל-חָי

Vayikra ha'adam shem ishto Chavah ki hi hayetah em kol-chai.

20. Adam named his wife Chavah, because she was the mother of all.

כא וַיַּעַשׂ יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים לְאָדָם וּלְאִשְׁתּוֹ כָּתְנוֹת עוֹר--וַיַּלְבִּשֵׁם

Vaya'as HASHEM Elokim le-Adam ule-ishto kotnot or vayalbishem.

כב וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים הֵן הָאָדָם הָיָה כְּאַחַד מִמֶּנּוּ לָדַעַת טוֹב וָרָע וְעַתָּה פֶּן-יִשְׁלַח יָדוֹ וְלָקַח גַּם מֵעֵץ הַחַיִּים וְאָכַל וָחַי לְעֹלָם

Vayomer HASHEM Elokim hen ha'adam hayah ke'achad mimenu lada'at tov vara ve'ata pen-yishlach yado velakach gam me'Etz haChayim ve'achal vachai le'olam.

22. HASHEM G-d said, "Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he put forth his hand and also take from the Tree of Life and eat, and live forever."

כג וַיְשַׁלְּחֵהוּ יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים מִגַּן-עֵדֶן--לַעֲבֹד אֶת-הָאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר לֻקַּח מִשָּׁם

Vayeshalchehu HASHEM Elokim miGan-Eden la'avod et-ha'adamah asher lukach misham.

23. HASHEM G-d banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the soil from which he was taken.

כד וַיְגָרֶשׁ אֶת-הָאָדָם וַיַּשְׁכֵּן מִקֶּדֶם לְגַן-עֵדֶן אֶת-הַכְּרֻבִים וְאֵת לַהַט הַחֶרֶב הַמִּתְהַפֶּכֶת לִשְׁמֹר אֶת-דֶּרֶךְ עֵץ הַחַיִּים

Vayegaresh et-ha'adam vayashken mikedem legan-Eden et-hakruvim ve'et lahat hacherev hamithapechet lishmor et-derech etz hachayim.

24. He drove away the man, and He stationed the Keruv-angels at the east of Eden, together with a fiery revolving sword, to guard the way of the Tree of Life.
